A Letter to My Younger Self with Mikael Temrowski (aka Quinn XCII) Recording Artist on Mutual Friends Management May 20, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Check out Coffee, the first single from Mike’s newest album A Letter to My Younger Self which drops in July. You can follow his Instagram for more.

    About Mike (Quinn XCII)

Mikael Temrowski, known by his stage name Quinn XCII (pronounced Quinn 92), is an American singer and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. He began his career in 2011 when he started writing and recording his own music as a sophomore at Michigan State University (where he was discovered by Jesse Coren of Mutual Friends Management), before releasing his debut EP Change of Scenery in May 2015. On September 15, 2017, he released his debut studio album The Story of Us under Columbia Records, with his sophomore album From Michigan with Love released on February 15, 2019.

    Episode Overview

In this episode, I sat down with my friend and recording artist, Mike Temrowski. You probably know Mike by his stage name, Quinn XCII (pronounced Quinn 92). He has been releasing music for nearly a decade and was discovered by my friend, Jesse Coren, owner of Mutual Friends Music Management.

I was excited to chat with Mike for a few reasons:

    1. Because he has an incredibly positive outlook on life and clearly does a ton of self-work

    2. I wanted to talk about achieving external success to see what matters

    3. I wanted to understand how artists and musicians are moving through the COVID19 situation since quarantine has destroyed the music festival and touring industry (for the time being)

This episode did not disappoint! We speak on my favorite subjects of the soul like gratitude, faith, the importance of perspective, and the positive mindset that led to Quinn XCII (aka Mike’s) success.

    My Favorite Quotes:

“That is such a more gratifying experience when you can help people. If one person is affected by my work, then I’ve done my job”

“As long as you have that correct perspective, you may already be ahead of everyone who might have more than you on a material playing field.”

“I’m now married and feel more like an adult”

“On the most cliché things that we discuss: there’s a reason we say the same things, because they’re true.”

“I’m taking this time to work on myself and know that the stuff that I’m missing will come back, but I just want to get back to this everyday life with a stronger and richer appreciation.”

“I’d like to see more people embracing others. We all walk around with our heads down in our phones, not acknowledging those around us.”

“A powerful thing to remember is what we send out is also what we receive. It’s kind of like a boomerang”

“I love being able to just make someone smile.”

    Episode Breakdown:

00:00 – Where did the name Quinn XCII come from?

5:00 – The beginning of his journey as an artist

    10:00 – On Belief + Manifestation

Holistic Health with Danny Steiner, Co-founder & COO of Kenshō Health May 13, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Check out Kenshō Health and Danny’s Instagram to learn more about the benefits of holistic health practices, find practitioners near you, and tap into online resources and classes.

    About Danny Steiner

Danny is a plant-based entrepreneur, digital innovation strategist and investor who is deeply focused on disrupting the way we live and increasing global well-being. Danny is the co-founder and COO of Kenshō Health.

He has launched and invested in a number of purpose-driven companies, worked closely with the Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman (and other behavioral economists) while at Princeton University, and advised Fortune 500 companies in digital innovation strategies.

He is also the Co-Founder of Deep Talks, a speaker series that brings thought leaders into intimate spaces for engaged discussions to challenge our widely held beliefs on important topics.

Danny has been involved with a number of non-profits including Human Rights Tattoo, Chess in the Schools, Our House Grief Charity, and Big Brother Big Sister.

    About Kenshō Health

Kenshō is the first curated holistic health marketplace that connects verified providers, students, and brands across practices including yoga, meditation, coaching and breathwork.

Described by TechCrunch as the "anti-thesis of Goop," the company focuses its energy on showcasing science-backed holistic health offerings + transparency around those offerings that are not yet supported by the scientific method.

Kensho is truly a mission driven company. At the start of the COVID19 / Corona Virus pandemic, Kenshō sprung to action to offer free & donation-based online health & wellness classes to their community on Instagram Live.

I have been co-leading pranayama / breathwork sessions with Danny every Monday at 8AM PT / 11am ET on Kensho’s Instagram. I also offer yoga and breathwork classes through Kenshō and have been impressed by their level of communication and the support they offer their practitioners like me.

As both teacher and student on Kenshō, I love the platform and am learning so much from the other incredible offerings.

    Episode Overview

Danny is the prime example of an entrepreneur who is “dog fooding” his company. This means that he regularly uses his own product. He has been meditating since he was 14 years old and has trialed most (if not all) of the holistic health offerings on Kenshō’s platform.

Danny tells me more about the start of Kenshō and how they launched with hundreds of wellness practitioners. He is most excited to open the eyes of new people who have never experienced holistic medicine before. Danny shares that even under our current shareholder capitalism regime, mission-driven entrepreneurs can align incentives with both their investors and customers.

We also discuss building healthy habits during COVID19 quarantine, Danny’s personal health habits, science-based v. experience-based learning, Alan Watts & the cosmic joke, and why it's important to live in service.

Some Important Statistics & Favorite Quotes:

    Quotes:

“Ultimately, it’s just about meeting people where they are at and providing many different paths, because there is no one path.”

“We want to be as open, transparent, and reliable as possible.”

“When I’m at my best, I’m asking am I on the right path? Are the steps I’m taking generally in the right direction? Do I feel good about the next step that I’m taking? If I can answer, yes… then awesome!”

“Keep it simple: once you prioritize one new healthy habit, the rest of them begin to fall into focus”

“For me, the hardest part is probably NOT DOING, it’s just sitting and allowing myself just to be.”

“It’s good to be patient and to make decisions thoughtfully, but in many instances it’s also good to just make a decision and see what happens – go with what feels right at that moment.”

“If you’re having trouble finding purpose or meaning or firm ground in any of this, see what you can do to give back. And it can be little, tiny things.”

Regenerative Activism with Joshua Hughes founder of Blacksheep Apr 29, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Josh would love for listeners to invest in the future they want and not wait for top down solutions. Otherwise, check out his work at Blacksheep.

    About Joshua Hughes

Joshua grew up working in his family’s auto-salvage business in Medford, Oregon. Through working in the auto-salvage industry, he learned the real value of what many consider “waste.” In his early adulthood, he developed a secure recycling business in the Pacific Northwest. Joshua became politically activated after 9/11 and soon left his office job to work as an activist and founded a biofuels cooperative.

In 2006, he relocated to Costa Rica and founded VerdEnergia, where he has acted as general manager since. Joshua founded the Shangri-Lanas forestry project and Blacksheep soon after.

    About Blacksheep: Regenerative Resource Management

Blacksheep is directly confronting the global assault on the environment and vulnerable communities through creative business solutions.

Their model is a formalized method of direct action against destructive industries, creating open-sourced investment pools focused on bolstering local economies and regenerating wildlife habitats.

Unlike traditional investment systems, the Blacksheep model does not consider people, animals or the environment as “externalities.”

They don’t invest in the destruction of land, the extraction of resources, or the enslavement of people. Instead, they take a grassroots approach – their model prioritizes the welfare of local people, broad ownership of land and protection of resources.

    Episode Overview

Josh spent the last 10+ years off the grid building a regenerative agriculture community in Costa Rica. He only recently returned to his home state, Oregon, seemingly just in the nick of time.

He takes a practical approach to some very high-level ideas. Many talk the talk about systems change, but he walks the walk, literally building new regenerative systems to replace broken, existing structures.

We cover a ton of ground including discussions on COVID-19, the looming economic crisis, activism, empathy, and history.

    My Favorite Quotes:

“Find something you love, find something you want to protect, and then see what you can do. And it can be something very small or very big.”

“I like mixed martial arts, getting in the ring and fighting, and you have to have good stance. Your feet have to be planted, and I felt like every time that I was going to swing at the bad ideas, I didn’t have a community with a footing… I was throwing myself backwards with my strong punch. The stronger I punched, the more I knocked myself down”

“We’re all activists for something, whether we like it or not”

“We’re regenerating community right now, not just soil.”

“Distraction takes away your ability to think it’s even possible to change.”

“There is now a farmer / hippie alliance, and it’s come through weed.”

“I don’t like that we only yell at each other about politics on TV, we should do it in the garden. Because while we’re disagreeing, we planted 3 trees”

“Sometimes a myth that’s wrong can still help you with the problem. Like people who think that porcupines can shoot their quills – helps people keep their distance from porcupines”

“Once this happens, you need leaders to step up. It’s time to lead, not time to wait.”

How Yoga Can Fix our Criminal Justice Crisis with Bill Brown of the Prison Yoga Project Apr 08, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Check out Bill’s work at the Prison Yoga Project and donate or volunteer if you feel called! Otherwise, check out the links below to familiarize yourself with the Criminal Justice crisis in the United States.

    About Bill Brown

Bill Brown (C-IAYT) is the Executive Director for the Prison Yoga Project. He has brought yoga and mindfulness to San Diego County prisons and jails since 2013 at Federal, State, and County facilities. He is a contributing editor to the Yoga Service Council/Omega Institute’s recently published book Best Practices for Yoga in the Criminal Justice System.

He also maintains a private practice as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) Practitioner and Group Facilitator, specializing in working with survivors of trauma

    About Prison Yoga Project

Prison Yoga Project supports incarcerated people with trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness practices to promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and improve public safety.

    To support this mission, they:

    - Provide trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness practices as a means of self-empowerment and self-rehabilitation

    - Reduce the physical, mental, and emotional impacts and healthcare costs associated with stress and unresolved trauma

    - Develop the self-awareness, self-worth, empathy, and compassion that leads to positive personal and pro-social choices

    - Foster a more peaceful and humane incarceration environment for incarcerated people and staff

    - Reduce the rate of recidivism among formerly incarcerated people

    - Support the people we serve, and those who serve with us, in their ability to connect with their higher selves

    - Publish and distribute educational materials (books, and audio/video programs) to support personal yoga and mindfulness practices

    - Assist prisons, governmental agencies, private entities, and individuals in establishing trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programs

    - Provide training in the rationale, practicalities, and methodology for providing trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programs

    Episode Overview

The Criminal Justice system in the United States is broken. It has failed in its goals of keeping our communities safe. We have created a system of punitive, rather than restorative justice, which is why 76% of incarcerated individuals end up behind bars again within 5 years of release.

Today I spoke with Bill Brown about the Prison Yoga Project, who teach yoga to incarcerated individuals to train them to be better members of their communities (both within and outside of prison/jail). Where there are yoga programs, incidents of violence in prison housing (not just among the students) decreases.

Some Important Statistics & Favorite Quotes:

    Quotes:

“I feel like I found the magic secret – you just put the focus on other people, and act with kindness, and really listen – and suddenly your whole experience of life changes… this is the gift that yoga ultimately brings.”

“To call awareness, to say what’s the emotional experience of being in the pose… this is what my experience is, your experience might be different.”

“Being able to see the divine in every aspect of what we meet in our experience.”

“Let’s forget about prison, these guys are there just having a different life experience. We’re all locked in a prison of our own making, trying to maintain some kind of identity we’ve created for ourselves.”

“What I see in yoga, is an anemic spirituality in the way that it’s approached in the Free World.”

    Incarceration Statistics in the USA:

    • We spend $80.1B / year on our prison system, and we have a 76% re-arrest rate within the first five years.
    • California spends $64,000 per incarcerated individual per year compared to $11,500 per student per year on education
    • Meanwhile, 80% of men in federal and state prisons do not have a high school diploma. There is a direct correlation between education and likelihood of being convicted of a crime.
    • It is estimated that we would save $18.5B per year on prisons if the high school male graduation rate increased by a mere 5%
    • Jail has become de-facto psychiatric care provider in the United States. The 3 largest psychiatric care providers in the USA are the New York County Jail, Los Angeles County Jail, and Cooke County Jail in Chicago!
    • Prison Yoga Project has trained 3,000+ mental health and wellness professionals

    About Philip Winter

Philip Winter is the Co-Founder & CEO of Nebia, currently reinventing the way people shower. Nebia is a San Francisco-based startup that has built a new shower system based on a better experience and unprecedented water savings. The company is backed by leading investors in Silicon Valley, including Y-Combinator. Prior to Nebia, Philip was a Princeton-in-Latin America Fellow working at Endeavor in Mexico City. He has a passion for the confluence of business and international development work. Philip earned his BA in International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was also a member of the varsity golf team.

    About Nebia

Nebia is reinventing the way people shower, based on a better experience, beautiful design, and unprecedented water savings. We are a San Francisco-based hardware startup, building a direct-to-consumer brand in a product category that hasn’t seen much innovation in decades. Nebia is backed by some of Silicon Valley’s leading investors, including Y-Combinator.

    Episode Overview

In this episode I had the privilege to connect with the co-founder of Nebia, Philip Winter. Philip and I discuss an array of topics. We begin with the story of Nebia, an atypical company even by Silicon Valley standards, and the classic 5 year “overnight success.” We discuss the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurship, the principles that have supported him through this journey, the current vibe in Silicon Valley, and toxic habits of entrepreneurs.

We also focus quite a bit on impact, sustainability, global water consumption and the potential for a global water-related crisis.

It’s clear to me that Philip and Nebia will be successful in reshaping the future of our planet.

    Some Highlights and Favorite Quotes:

Philp describes his YCombinator interview at the end of which YC founder, Sam Altman asks to take a full shower!

Philip shares critical advice from Apple CEO, Tim Cook: “We make lots of product prototypes that people don’t like at Apple; just keep going!”

Philip explains an important tradeoff that all hardware companies must face: quality v. time v. cost – you if you could only optimize for two, which would you optimize for?

“Spaces have a certain power over you”

Do You Believe Anything is Possible? with Blu Cosmic Eagle Mar 27, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Listen to Blu’s wisdom shine through her podcast DeJaBlu, and check out her space the The MotherTree LA

    About Blu Cosmic Eagle

Blu Cosmic Eagle is a healer, a teacher, a coach, an artist, a musician and a modern shaman. Her podcast, DeJaBlu, explores the realm of the metaphysical. She guides students through Life’s Purpose meditations utilizing the Gene Keys and other fascinating tools. Blu inspires me with her positivity, deep belief that we are all supported by the universe, and commitment to serving others. Another fun fact – she’s 70% deaf, but still an awesome musician!

She runs a community space in Los Angeles called the Mother Tree, where all are welcome to dive deep into the spiritual journey of Self Transcendence.

    Episode Overview

In this episode, Blu and I go deep on many important topics. Though this was recorded almost exactly 2 weeks before the Corona Virus / COVID-19 situation became obvious in the US, it’s as though we recorded during the new normal. So many of the ideas that we explore will support our growth through #physicaldistancing and quarantine.

This episode starts and ends differently than most, because I was extremely moved by Blu’s ceremony of starting and ending her podcast with a blessing, so I asked her to do that here. From there we discuss dis-ease and healing as Blu walks me through a body-scan. We delve into manifestation and the importance of belief and we ask “Is anything truly possible?”

I invite you to listen for yourself and to decide where you land on some of these subjects. I find that often the most important questions return a paradoxical answer.

As always, feel free to reach out directly with questions, comments, or thoughts!

    Much love,

    Marc

    Some Highlights and Favorite Quotes:

Learning to Trust the Universe - blessing at the end of the episode

Blu guides me through a body scan exploring why certain emotions might be arising in my physical being

On Intention: “It doesn’t matter what you say, it’s about how you feel that will be translated”

On Belief & Manifestation: “If you don’t believe in it, then there is a huge percent of resistance in your field, so how are you going to attract anything if there’s resistance present?”

“The believing is the seeing” – the belief comes first

Forget Self Care, What About "Us" Care? w/ Lesley Eccles (Founder of Relish, Co-Founder of FanDuel) Mar 20, 2020
    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Check out Lesley’s new company, Relish, which has built a high quality relationship coach in your pocket!

    Episode Overview:

In this episode, Lesley and I discuss the incredible story of her time at Fanduel, the first startup company she co-founded (with her husband Nigal). Fanduel was a massive success raising billions in capital, but in the end the founding team walked away with nothing. An important lesson to start-up founders everywhere.

We dig deep on what it means to be a startup founder while also taking care of a family. Lesley offers great advice for young founders who find themselves raising capital today. We also discuss why your self care practice need not be meditation, but can be something much simpler or less obvious. We discuss relationship styles, therapy, and communication and Lesley’s passion for improving the relationships of all Relish users.

It’s been said that a thorn of experience is worth a wilderness of warning. Lesley has a ton of great insights to share from 25 years of marriage, nearly as many years parenting, and over a decade starting and building a multi-billion dollar business.

    About Lesley

Lesley Eccles is the Founder and CEO of Relish, the first-ever relationship training app making it easier to build happy, healthy, more connected relationships. A serial entrepreneur and startup advisor, Lesley was previously co-founder and former head of marketing at FanDuel, the fantasy sports company which she grew into a billion dollar company. In her spare time, Lesley mentors a number of female entrepreneurs via the AllRaise program, and serves as a board member of multiple charities in the UK. Lesley graduated from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with a degree in Modern Languages. She is based in New York.

    My Favorite Quotes / Highlights:

“When you’re doing a startup, it puts pressure on your relationship even if you’re both not in it together, because it is startups are all consuming. If I wasn’t in it with Nigal, the amount of stress that we were under in that business, I’m pretty sure we would have separated.”

“If you’re a team at home, you’re a team in the workplace”

“Life’s too short to be in a relationship that’s not as good as it can be.”

    Episode Breakdown:

    02:00 – Lesley’s experience at Fanduel

10:00 – Starting a business with her husband
