    Longhorn Republic: March 14, 2023 - Dancing Yet Again Mar 14, 2023
    Show notes

After strong runs in the conference tournaments, with the men bringing home the title, both of the Texas Longhorns basketball teams find themselves preparing for tournament runs that set up for fireworks. For the men, sitting as a No. 2 seed after winning the Big 12 tournament, getting out of the first two rounds for the first time since 2008 means a potential matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies, who drew the No. 7 seed in the same regional. If they can survive a tough matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Round of 64, then the stakes don't get any higher than a Lone Star Showdown for the rights to go to the second weekend of the tournament. The ladies came up one game short of the conference title but landed the No. 4 seed and the rights to host the first two rounds of the regional at the Moody Center in Austin. However, their path to the Final Four shapes up to be a slugfest, having to face a tough Louisville squad even to make it out of the first weekend. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: March 8, 2023 - Cutting Down the Nets Mar 08, 2023
    Show notes

With a dominant win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the Texas Longhorns' women's basketball team brought home their first regular-season title since the 2004 season -- just three seasons into the Vic Schaefer era. For their troubles, the Longhorns brought home three of the major conference awards, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year, in addition to three all-conference selections and a spot on the freshman team. They also now have the advantage of being the top seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting them up for a run at the tournament title and potentially a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in a few weeks. What are the expectations for the Longhorns in the postseason and how deep can the run be? We also dive in on the close finish for the men's team, unable to close the book on the regular season race, but positioning themselves on the opposite side of the bracket from both the Baylor Bears and the Kansas Jayhawks. That favorable positioning puts them in a prime position to make a run at another conference tournament title, in a season that could have been lost. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: March 1, 2023 - Basketball Can't Close Mar 01, 2023
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns, both the men and the women, had a chance to cement their place in the conference pecking order against the Baylor Bears and both were unable to get it done. So now, as the regular season comes to a close, both teams face must-win situations in order to keep their share of the conference title and bring the trophy back to Austin. After a 3-1 week, the baseball team took the No. 1 LSU Tigers down to the wire, but couldn't put a run across the plate, while the softball team knocked off multiple ranked teams in their weekend tournament as they steadily climb up the rankings themselves. However, the swim teams broke the trend of struggling to finish the deal, with both the men and women brining home record-setting Big 12 Championships. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: February 21, 2023 - Baseball's Disastrous Start Feb 21, 2023
    Show notes

After seeing double-digit departures through the MLB Draft and the transfer portal, the Texas Longhorns baseball team is clearly looking at a rebuilding year after making yet another trip to Omaha a year ago under head coach David Pierce. After two close losses on Friday and Saturday, errors and defensive struggles led to a blowout at the hands of the Vanderbilt Commodores to close out the season and send the Longhorns back to Austin 0-3 to start the year. Were there any bright spots and what does Texas need to fix as they prepare for their home opener? After getting the job done a week ago, both the men's and women's basketball teams are still battling atop the conference standings with the season rapidly approaching its close and pivotal conference matchups on the horizon. Longhorn Republic: February 16, 2023 - Baseball Preview Feb 16, 2023
    Show notes

The 2023 Texas Longhorns' baseball season is right around the corner and we dove in on the new-look lineup, with significant turnover for both the lineup and the coaching staff setting Texas up for a rebuilding year after yet another trip to Omaha. Head coach David Pierce is potentially looking at his toughest coaching job since his first year at Texas if he hopes to get the Longhorns back to the College World Series for the third consecutive year and the fourth time in his tenure at Texas. On the hardwood, both the men's and the women's teams went 1-1 for the week and lost a bit of control in the Big 12 title race. While they still both sit atop their respective standings, they now are staring at a series of must-win games if they want to finish the season atop the conference standings and secure the top seed in the conference tournaments. Longhorn Republic: February 8, 2023 - Texas sits atop Big 12 basketball Feb 09, 2023
    Show notes

Thanks to their recent shared success, both the Texas men and the Texas women sit atop the Big 12 standings as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. The men played four teams ranked in the top 11 in the country over a span of 10 days, going 2-2 in the stretch. The two wins included a home win over the Baylor Bears and a road win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the only Big 12 team to beat the Longhorns in Austin. With some help from the usual conference chaos, the Longhorns' 8-3 conference record has them currently settled atop the standings as they take on the bottom three teams in their next three games. Vic Schaefer and the Texas women are one of the hottest teams in the country right now, rattling off their sixth-consecutive win with a nine-point win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Austin. Their one-game margin at the top of the conference will likely come under duress sooner rather than later with Iowa State ahead who sits just two games out of first place in the league. Longhorn Republic: February 1, 2023 - Basketball splits a tough run Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

The No. 10 Texas Longhorns didn't come out of Knoxville with the result they hoped, struggling to keep up with the post play of Tennessee as a part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The No. 4 team in the country boasts one of the most efficient defenses in modern college basketball and they managed to turn that into points against the Longhorns. However, the men rebounded quickly and kept their spot in the mix at the top of the Big 12 standings, knocking off No. 11 Baylor at home - coming away with a win over the Bears for the first time since 2019. The ladies continued their march through conference play, knocking off the Oklahoma State Cowgirls and Oklahoma Sooners and solidifying their place atop the Big 12 standings as they build momentum heading down the stretch. For their efforts, they finally break back into the Top 25, setting up another week of pivotal matchups. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: January 25, 2023 - Texas cruises past Oklahoma State Jan 25, 2023
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns, both the men and the women, continue to put themselves in solid position to make a run at a conference title as we rapidly approach the back half of conference play. The men, after dropping just their second conference game a week ago to the Iowa State Cyclones, responded with back-to-back wins over West Virginia and Oklahoma State to move into a three-way tie for first place in the conference. Following a weekend non-conference matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers, Texas will face another tough ranked matchup as they welcome the Baylor Bears to the Moody Center. On the ladies' side, Texas picked up its third ranked win in four games, beating the Baylor Bears in Waco for the first time since 2017. Up next for the Longhorns, a matchup that will go a long way in deciding who will take home the women's crown as they welcome No. 14 Oklahoma to the Moody Center. Longhorn Republic: January 17, 2023 - Undefeated basketball weekend Jan 17, 2023
    Show notes

On both the men's and women's sides, the Texas Longhorns had a very successful week on the hardwood. Under interim head coach Rodney Terry, the men's team overcame not one, but two double-digit deficits to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 7-1 since Terry took over the squad. Obviously, come-from-behind wins are not how you want it to happen every time, but making second-half adjustments is a strength for the Longhorns at the start of conference play. We dive in on what we think is causing the slow starts and how Texas manages to spark it in the second half. On the ladies' side, in typical fashion during the Vic Schaefer era, the Longhorns have started to build momentum heading into the grind of conference play, knocking off back-to-back ranked opponents in dominant fashion. It is still early, but we dive in on early signs of another "peak at the right time" performance for Texas under Schaefer. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: January 11, 2023 - Moving Past Chris Beard Jan 11, 2023
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns moved on from basketball coach Chris Beard last week and stepped into uncertainty about the coaching future of the program. However, the Longhorns answered some questions about interim head coach Rodney Terry's ability to coach defense with a narrow win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. What did we learn and what do we hope to see for the remainder of the season? As football season comes to a close, so does the first semester of scoring for the Director's Cup. After winning back-to-back cups in the previous academic years, Texas improved their first-semester performance from a year ago, with the usual suspects that propel the Longhorns to victory still waiting to take center stage. As we set up for an exciting spring, we get a breakdown of the scoring and where Texas goes next from Brett Wilkinson (@Direct_Cupdates). Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook.
