    Show notes

Chuck Carroll, the Weight Loss Champ, was addicted to Taco Bell frequently buying $20 of food every time, and devouring it in 1 sitting. He went through life trying to make others and himself feel comfortable in a 420 pound body. But it just never felt right. Like many people, he tried many diets and weight loss strategies, eventually trying gastric bypass. In his quest to continue to get healthier, he found plant-based nutrition and realized the power of a whole foods plant-based diet. He now devotes his life to spreading this message and helping others lose weight and keep it off using diet and not surgery.

Chuck is the host of The Exam Room Podcast, presented by The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine.

As you'll hear, this has been a project that Doug, his wife Shari and Rick have been working on for several years. I hope that hearing about this successful program will inspire you to promote something similar in your hometown.

I had a conversation with Doug on his health journey that you can find above in the embedded player or HERE. After having 2 cardiac events, he realized something needed to be done. He went plant-based, lost weight and is now paying it forward and teaching others about this life saving way of eating and living.

ICP 66: Dr. Jake Mey, PhD, RD- The role of Ketones, Carbohydrates and Pop-Tarts in the western diet Apr 20, 2019
    Show notes

Special thank you to Liane Abe and Valarie Hummel who are the newest patrons of the Podcast.

In this weeks conversation, I sat down with Registered Dietician, PhD researcher and Twitter “Equal Opportunity Nutrition Critic” Jake Mey.

I wanted to speak to Jake because he seemed to have unique philosophies on areas that are particularly hot right now. He conducts research on skeletal muscle metabolism, ketones and carbohydrates.

He is not wedded to one particular dietary strategy vs. another which provided a nuanced and educational back and forth on various nutrition topics.

We speak about the concept of moderation in a world that is becoming more and more unhealthy and answer the perennial question “Can I eat Pop-Tarts and still be healthy?”

We also speak about ketones, ketosis and the pros and cons for lay people and athletes. And we end with Jake’s perspective on the nutrition conversations that are happening right now on social media and if he thinks these are productive, wastes of time or somewhere in between.

If you are active on Twitter, I would recommend following him @CakeNutrition, and yes, we speak about the origins of that handle, too.

I know you’ll enjoy this conversation with the knowledgeable and jovial Dr. Jake Mey.

ICP 65: Dr. Wiliam Li- Angiogenesis, preventing and reversing cancers and Eating to Beat disease. Apr 06, 2019
    Show notes

Dr. William Li is a cancer researcher and is the Director and CEO of the Angiogenesis Foundation. He is also the author of the new book that I enjoyed very much called, Eat to Beat Disease. He argues that a common thread between many chronic diseases is the formation of either too many or too few blood vessels, otherwise known as angiogenesis.

In our conversation we also speak about ketogensis, the reason why your grandmother who smoke and drank lived to 95 years old, the 5 pillar defense systems within the body, starving cancer cells and chemo and radiation treatments for cancer.

Thank you to Bill Hammond and Diane Vanderwoude for becoming patrons of the podcast.

ICP 63: Dr. Stephan Guyenet- The Hungry Brain and the unconscious reasons we overeat Mar 09, 2019
    Show notes

If you’re new to the podcast, I focus on speaking to medical doctors, PhD’s, registered dietitians…experts…on ways that we can make ourselves and our world healthier through lifestyle medicine. Through these conversations I want to give you the tools and inspiration you need to stay healthy.

It is my honor to bring you researcher and scholar Dr. Stephan Guyenet, PhD. He is an obesity researcher and health writer based out of Washington State who combines neuroscience, physiology, evolutionary biology and nutrition to present mechanisms, explanations and solutions to the global health and weight issue we are seeing today.

This connection was made on Twitter, where he is quite active @whsource and you can also find his writing at StephanGuyenet.com.

In our conversation, Here’s what we cover:

    • We start with talking about his upcoming appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience with Gary Taubes.
    • At around Minute 14- We go into What caused a dramatic increase in obesity in 1980 after the USDA guidelines changed.
    • At Minute 22- The government’s role in shaping our diet and keeping us healthy.
    • At Minute 28…The Carbohydrate insulin Hypothesis
    • At minute 37-Research into why the SAD is so enticing
    • At minutes 47: We cover the Calories In vs. Calories Out hypothesis
    • At Minute 52 We cover The Lipostat, a very important, unconscious brain center for adiposity and body fatness
    • At 1:03 We talk about specifics of WFPB and Keto for those thinking about changing their diets at minute…
    • At 1:07 we end with talking about different interventions for Type 2 diabetes
    • And lastly, at 1:19 Dr. Guyenet’s ways to make the country healthier is he were a mover and shaker, that at around minute…

I’ve read a lot of books over the years, and Dr. Guyenet’s book, The Hungry Brain was full of new concepts, theories and connections that I had never read before, and best of all, it’s incredibly evidence-based yet is written in a way that can be digested for the lay-public.

I hope you enjoy this conversation on Episode #63 with Dr. Stephan Guyenet.

ICP 62: Dr. Evan Allen, MD- Lines of Evidence and Debates on Dietary Fats  Feb 23, 2019
    Show notes

Bringing you interviews, conversations and new perspectives with doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine, this is Episode 62 of The Ian Cramer Podcast.

As you heard in the intro, this podcast is dedicated to having long-form conversations with professionals and experts about various topics having to do with lifestyle medicine. Included is an emphasis on both Breadth and depth of knowledge and questions challenging our notions and philosophies of what it means to be healthy.

In Episode 62 I had a conversation with Dr. Evan Allen. Dr. Allen practices in Henderson, Nevada. He is a board-certified family physician and graduate of Loma Linda School of medicine, member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. This connection was made on Twitter where he is quote active espousing the role of diet and lifestyle in staying healthy, and you can follow him @EAllen0417.

Dr. Allen started out as a Seventh-Day Adventist, and thought that because he was eating a vegetarian diet, he was eating right. But a life insurance physical said otherwise.

He then happened to watch the movie Forks Over Knives, and as you’ll hear him say “There was no way that this movie was correct” and he set out to prove this movie wrong. I’ll let him finish this story….but just know that it made me smile and it worth a listen.

In this episode, We talk about:

    • What are we eating and how those calories impact our bodies
    • Diabetes and an easy to follow analogy that describes its etiology.
    • Then we get into Fats- One of Dr. Allen’s specialties.
      • We talk about the lines of evidence implicating saturated fats as a causative factor in cardiovascular diseases, and why these fats are so hotly debated today.

I hope you enjoy this conversation, on Episode #62 with Dr. Evan Allen.
