The Phenomenon of Your Metabolism – Siim Land : 628 Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Siim Land joins me from Estonia, a Baltic country in Eastern Europe on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland.

He’s an author, public speaker, and coach. After a short stint in the military and earning a degree in Anthropology, he decided instead to fully commit to writing, podcasting, entrepreneurship, and coaching in the health and wellness space. He educates people about optimizing health, performance, longevity, and well-being with different biohacking techniques.

In his newest book, “Metabolic Autophagy,” Siim takes a nearly 500-page dive into the most current technology and scientific research available so you can “improve healthspan, get more things done and potentially increase life expectancy.”

“Your whole entire world is almost surrounded by the concept of metabolism,” Siim says. “The reason I added autophagy to that is also that when I was doing that research about autophagy then I realized that it's kind of a very central component to everything else that your body goes through on a daily basis.”

We talk about autophagy, intermittent fasting, keto-adaption and much more in this episode. Siim’s perspective on biohacking is nuanced and backed by a whole lotta science. He’s done the research legwork so you don’t have to. Listen on as he gives practical tips for where to start and how to get results—all with a common-sense approach.

“I think the emphasis shouldn't be to kick your ass all the time and do a lot of stressful activities but also actually allow your body to heal and use those things as a form of recovery,” he says.

The Power of Shame with Comedian Kristen Carney : 627 Sep 17, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is comedian, writer and podcaster Kristen Carney.

She performs stand-up comedy at live shows, on television, and, of course, all over the Internet. She’s also written for Comedy Central and The Adam Carolla Show. As a radio personality, she’s co-hosted “Loveline” with Dr. Drew and Mike, as well as The Adam Carolla Show. While she’s co-hosting the “Ask Women” podcast, she gets candid about sexuality.

And if you’re thinking we’re going to talk about all things funny and sexy today, you’d be right—and wrong.

Kristen juggles all her professional gigs while managing clinical depression. She hosts a podcast—Kristen and Ch(ill)—to bring the real challenges of depression and mental health into an honest public forum.

“When you're depressed, you're so weighed down by the smallest little tasks like getting up to take a shower or paying your car bill,” she says. “Those things feel so heavy that the last thing on your list is figuring out how to get a brain scan.”

We talk about how she hacks her brain health, what she does on the just-plain-sucks days, the difficulties of dating when depressed, how shame shows up, and why headstands have become her go-to, feel-better move.

“I'm not trying to spin it positive when it's not,” Kristen says, “but to actually find the positive in it that's genuine.” Listen on for some surprising insights.

Mycelium Just Might Save the Bees, And Us – Paul Stamets : 624 Sep 05, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Paul Stamets is with me in person at Alpha Labs. Paul is a speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur. He is considered an intellectual and industry leader in habitat, medicinal use and production of fungi, and he considers himself a “mycological warrior.” Listening to him describe, decode and illuminate the workings of the mushroom world is an enthralling experience, indeed.

“Mushrooms can feed you, they can kill you, they can heal you, they can send you on a spiritual journey,” Paul says. He knows all of this from first-hand experience. He’s spent over four decades in the Pacific Northwest studying and researching the world of mushrooms. He lectures extensively and his presentations cover a range of mushroom species and research showing how mushrooms can help the health of people and the planet.

From origins: “Over 500 million years ago, fungi were the first organisms come to land,” Paul says. “Just this past month [May 2019], they found new fossil records that pushes back the entrance of fungi onto land to a billion years ago. This is hundreds of millions of years before plants.”

To modern humans: “You and I are actually mycelial beings, and we are descendant of fungi,” he says. “Fungi are our ancestors.”

Paul says we’re intertwined with mushrooms at a cellular level. He believes that habitats have immune systems—just like people—and mushrooms are cellular bridges between the two. Our close evolutionary relationship to fungi can be the basis for novel pairings in the microbiome that lead to greater sustainability and immune enhancement.

And from neurogenesis to our microbiome to our mitochondria, fungi are linked to us. Part history lesson and all interesting, Paul’s stories are filled with intriguing discoveries.

His research is considered revolutionary and is creating a paradigm shift for helping ecosystems worldwide.

As a special bonus in this episode, Paul shares exciting new information about his work with bees. “This'll be the first podcast that I'll be mentioning something that enables and empowers everybody on this planet to do something,” he says. Hint: it has something to do with bears, bees, butterflies and biodefense. Learn more about the BeeMushroomed™ Feeder.

You Can’t Instagram Health: Evolving with Chalene Johnson : 623 Sep 03, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is a lifestyle and business expert, motivational speaker, and host of two top-ranked podcasts: “The Chalene Show” and “Build Your Tribe.” The Huffington Post has recognized Chalene Johnson as one of the “Top 50 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch.” She’s also sold millions of fitness videos and is The Guinness Book of World Records-holder for being featured in the highest number of fitness videos.

After years of success in the fitness industry, a shocking health scare prompted her to question her whole approach to wellness—her own and others’. “It didn't dawn on me the damage I was doing to my brain and how that isn't health,” she says. “That was abuse.”

And now, with the help of top dietitians, doctors, researchers and experts, she’s turning the diet industry upside down. “I realize I have to be really open minded now to science and open minded to the fact that we just are learning so much more every single day—and it's exciting.” She’s founded the 131 Method and written a new book by the same name, “131 Method: Your Personalized Nutrition Solution to Boost Metabolism, Restore Gut Health, and Lose Weight.”

“I am evolved,” Chalene says. “And I have to keep my integrity. And that's not always easy. But if you just stay focused on what you know and what you believe is right and you just keep taking the next right step, those decisions get a little easier.”

In my conversation with Chalene, we tackle lies in the fitness industry, shady marketing tactics and smart consumers, personalized nutrition, Keto for women, phases of fasting, why achieving health can be fraught with privilege, and more.

Dr. Sophia Kogan is an integrative hair health expert. She is a cofounder and the chief medical strategist at Nutrafol®, where she has coauthored peer-reviewed studies on hair-thinning, hair-loss treatments and botanical medicine.

Hair wellness “is really about utilizing clinically proven and efficacious nutraceuticals,” says Dr. Kogan. “Basically, botanicals that have clinical efficacy to rebalance the pathways from within.”

Kick Veggies to the Curb and Go Full Carnivore – Dr. Paul Saladino : 621 Aug 27, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with a medical doctor who says you don’t have to eat your vegetables. Literally.

“We have been in this arms race with plants as humans for millions of years," says Dr. Paul Saladino. “Plants are out to get us. They don't want us to eat them.”

Dr. Saladino is a certified functional medicine practitioner in San Diego who focuses on in-depth study of human behavior and diseases. His journey through healthcare has been quite varied. He was a practicing physician’s assistant in the field of cardiology for a number of years, then went on to earn a medical degree. He also obtained a functional medicine certification and recently completed a psychiatric residency.

Dr. Saladino's work promotes the use of science-based information to deeply understand the root causes of illness and provide individualized care that goes beyond traditional pharmacological treatments. “That's really led me to some strange and wild jungle holes of thought,” he admits.

He’s also passionate about researching connections between nutritional biochemistry and chronic disease, and the benefits of a Carnivore Diet. He believes that inflammation and autoimmune diseases are linked. “What we're dealing with in Western medicine is a tidal wave of chronic inflammation,” he says, “a tidal wave of autoimmunity.”

For the curious among you, this conversation explores a lot of “whys,” such as:

    • Why our human bodies are designed for nose-to-tail animal consumption
    • Why you feel great eating raw meat
    • Why animal liver is a superfood
    • Why plant molecules don’t play nice with human biology
    • Why high-protein diets are terrible
    • Why you’re cooking your bacon wrong if you can hear it sizzling
    • Why you should consider putting the brakes on your grilling

Listen on for a different perspective on how to ditch plants and amp up your meat: “I think what's cool is to be able to deliver knowledge that creates power leveraging this for better health outcomes,” Dr. Saladino says.

    Upgrading Our Collective Consciousness – Matthew Modine : 620 Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m excited to welcome Matthew Modine. You may know him best from his acting roles in television, film and theater. He’s also an accomplished film producer, film director and screenwriter. His career has spanned nearly four decades, and he’s won numerous industry nominations and awards.

What you may not know are the many ways in which he’s a tireless activist and environmentalist. During this wide-ranging, thought-provoking interview, our conversation touches on the moon landing, bottled water, paper straws, recycling, spirituality, reincarnation, changes in Hollywood, and much more. I learned a lot, and I hope you will, too.

We talk about consciousness and how we can raise both our own and the collective to upgrade ourselves, our workplaces, our communities, and our planet. Here are some highlights in Matthew’s own words:

    • Responsibility:“I don't know if I was conscious of it at the time, but I knew that there was a great metaphor in what my father had told me, is that when there's a mess we all have a responsibility to do something to clean it up,”

    • Connection: “I think that spirituality is a kind of connectedness to all of the life that exists on the planet.”

    • Ocean Plastic: “The greater problem is the decomposing of those plastics. It doesn't disappear, it just becomes smaller and smaller and becomes what we call microplastics.”

    • Life:“You're a part of this great cycle of life, you know? You're not bigger or more important than it. You're maybe a keystone character in it, an important part of the chain, but you're not bigger and more important than the least of us.”

    • Shared Humanity: “It is through the singing of songs and the telling of stories that we evolve culturally, that we learn to understand other people's points of view.”

Your Brain Voltage: Measure It, Raise It, Control It – Paul Sorbo : 619 Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with Paul Sorbo of WAVi, a company that’s bringing fast and affordable information about brain performance to everyone.

“Giving people a way to measure the way that their brain is aging is so important,” says Paul Sorbo of WAVi. “We look at heart health. We look at blood pressure. We look at colon. Literally, we look at everything. Why are we not measuring the one thing that controls all of it?”

Based in Boulder, Colorado, WAVi has integrated a mass-screening EEG device with a software platform for functional assessment in the field of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. It’s a total all-encompassing brain performance platform that has been steeped in development for nearly a decade. The resulting product is a full FDA-regulated device Class II that can easily measure biomarkers of your brain with detail and precision—in less than 12 minutes.

We discuss WAVi’s latest research from age management to concussion information. They have found that functionality of the brain is different than everything else. I was so intrigued that I had a scan performed and filmed it. Head over to the Bulletproof YouTube channel to see the video.

Listen in to learn how assessing brain function and measuring available cognitive resources is leading to exciting new developments in the care and cure of what ails the brain. “This is ultimately to give people a way to measure how their brain ages, to measure how their brain is performing and to look at their performance metrics so that they can either improve upon it or they just have a baseline for their whole life,” Paul says. “That is invaluable information for individuals to have.”
