    The House List

The House List is a casual, long-form conversational show by music industry veteran Peter Agoston. Agoston got his start on terrestrial radio in 1994 and from there set off on a long journey that continues to this day. Years spent contributing print writing and photography for the likes of Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, The Source, Miami New Times, Wax Poetics and more. He also spearheaded an influential boutique record label and video magazine. For over the last decade he has worked as a booking agent. This podcast is a long-running return to form, as an interviewer.

Ep. 110 - Luke Sick (Sacred Hoop) Oct 03, 2019
    Show notes

Our guest Luke Sick is an Underground Bay Area hip-hop vet. This seminal group Sacred Hoop played an integral roll in the mid 90's mega-blast of underground rap tapes spawned in California and traded worldwide. Luke's psychedelic story-telling approach is like Slick Rick meets Andre Nickatina meets Charles Bukowski meets Norman Mailer. In the late aughts he's been releasing a mind-numbing amount of new projects on cassette all worth tracking down. If you may not really be that familiar with his work let this conversation be your gateway drug into a vast array of songs and albums. Enjoy and don't forget to help us spread the word!

    Ep. 109 - Olivia Gatwood Sep 24, 2019
    Show notes

Olivia Gatwood is a world renown touring poet, she just published her second novel of essays and poems titled 'Life Of The Party' on Random House. Our host Peter Agoston sat with Olivia in Los Angeles recently to talk about her childhood - growing up in Albuquerque as well as Trinidad and Tobago. She's a skillful writer whose work traverses deeply into personal reflection. On 'Life of the Party' she uses the modern fixation of so-called "true crime" as a devise to examine how and why it is, what it is. Pretty fascinating stuff. Share this podcast if you may know someone that would be into Olivia's work. Don't forget to subscribe where ever you listen to podcasts and drop us a line at thehouselistpodcast@gmail.com - She also has a fantastic weekly podcast entitled Say More worth lending an ear to.

    Ep. 108 - Dax Pierson Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

The last time I saw Dax Pierson he was on tour with Subtle in support of their genre-defying debut album 'The New White'. I booked them a show at an all ages DIY venue inside of an old schoolhouse by the beach in Manila, California. After the show, we made the 5 minute drive to Arcata and they slept on my floor. On the verge of making major artistic strides. That was in November of 2004. In 2005, while on another tour, driving on I-80 in Iowa, Subtle's 15 passenger Ford van hit a patch a black ice, lost control, flipped and Pierson's seat became dislodged. From this near fatal tragedy, Dax's spinal injuries rendered him quadriplegia. Our conversation took place in his home studio in North Oakland. We talked the past, present and future. We share some commonalities in our health situations. He was very generous with his time. Dax just released a brand new project, his first in many years titled 'Live In Oakland' on Ratskin Records. You can buy it here (portions are used in the intro and outro of this episode): ratskinrecords.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-oakland

    Ep. 107 - Onra Apr 25, 2019
    Show notes

We're back in effect, catching up with globe hoping producer/performer Onra during an off day on tour while in LA. Onra and I go way back. Our conversation serves as a proper catch up as we discuss some of the benchmarks from his career thus far. Over the last year Onra started up his own imprint as well, Nothing But Net, part of the reason he is on tour right now. Felt good catching up with an old friend but also to get a new episode out. Sorry for the delay!

    Ep. 106 - Group Home Feb 23, 2019
    Show notes

Group Home's debut album Livin' Proof is an impenetrable piece of street art. From DJ Premier's production, Danny Hasting's photographic layout to the gruff and honest vocals by Lil Dap and Melachi The Nutcracker. It isn't their only album though, I truly enjoy revisiting 1999's A Tear For The Ghetto as well. Last year they dropped the LP Forever and off the record, I know they have some big stuff coming soon. This is the last convo recorded at my old Brooklyn apt / studio. Hope you enjoy, please subscribe and spread the word. Ep. 105 - Breezly Brewin Feb 14, 2019
    Show notes

This was the last podcast conversation recorded in my old Brooklyn apt, where the vast majority of all previous episodes have been recorded. It is an epic one. Breezly Brewin hasn't really had a long form interview like this on record, so it was fantastic to hear about his life and his journey into music. Now, a full time school teacher, Breeze grew up in the Bronx. We talk a lot about his childhood, playing basketball and how (like a few other of our most epic talks) Pete Nice helped him early on in his career. The Juggaknots (his group with brother, and sister) never really get their proper due, so I truly enjoyed digging our heels into the writing process of their seminal 1996 debut. The guy is extremely talented as a song / poem writer. Hope you enjoy this one and please subscribe and share feely.

Ep. 104 - My Wing Man (Antonio DePietro) Feb 13, 2019
    Show notes

I've know Tony for years! He designed memorable album covers for releases on my old labels, namely Sadat X's 'Black October' and J. Rawl's 'Histories Greatest Battles'. He's also designed numerous show flyers for me. Recently, he has been focusing his creative attention on his single-panel comic @mywingman - in this convo we shoot to gift about the comic's evolution as well as toss around some quick ruminations about the House List. I recorded this as I was packing up my apartment in Brooklyn this Winter, preparing for a cross country move to LA (which I am currently writing this bio). Enjoy! Ep. 103 - Alias (2001) Jan 21, 2019
    Show notes

This episode is culled from an old cassette I discovered, where in 2001 (I believe) I interview Brendon 'Alias' Whitney from the Anticon collective. On the same tape were conversations with Doseone and Sole, but I wanted to share this. It was recorded on the phone as part of a larger story, although I don't recall where I wrote the piece for. Alias was in Oakland at the time. It's short but a great snap-shot of time. Ep. 102 - DJ Mister Cee Jan 18, 2019
    Show notes

We start 2019 off right with another in-depth journey of the life of an artist. Today I sat with Brooklyn's own DJ Mister Cee with an extensive breakdown of his career in the culture of hip-hop. Longtime DJ for Big Daddy Kane, we run down in detail the makings of almost all of Kane's albums, from the perspective of the DJ. This actually is dedicated to all the DJ's out there, in fact. Mister Cee also played a huge roll in helping Notorious BIG on the outset of his career, he shares some great stories of his times with Biggie as well. There are a lot of jewels in this, Cee is a great conversationalist and a king-level DJ. Hope you enjoy and don't forget to subscribe!
