Is your creativity frozen?

As we move into spring, we are feeling the thaw. The world is waking up and after several months of hunkering down against the freeze, new life is pushing its way toward the sun again. We are familiar with this cycle, but every year is different. This spring, with vaccinations rolling out to more and more people and our COVID-19 rates starting to curb, many of us are imagining opening our metaphorical windows for the first time in a YEAR.

This cycle of growth feels different because many of us have been frozen for longer.

We are faced with remembering how to be in our bodies and be in our world. Many of us with chronic illness can relate to the concept of coming out of our sickbed. We remember how we used to move, but we don’t yet know how we move now. What muscles have atrophied and need to be reconditioned? What new limitations do we have? What new perspective?

When we can only put one foot in front of the other, when everything is so chaotic that we cannot look ahead, it is hard to be creative. Has your imagination atrophied during a year in which so many of us had our nose to the ground, our only focus on surviving?

This month the cards are telling us that it is time to tone our muscles. We are starting to stretch. We are warming our bodies and opening our eyes to a wider concept of what might be possible for us. It is a re-learning, a remembering, but we are doing it in a new world. A world that needs creativity and our new perspectives. This month, we are saying yes to the inspiration that is coming our way.

Do you like your witchcraft dirty and dangerous?

Magic is having a revival right now. Witches are sliding into our DMs, spells are all over our Instagram feeds, and witchcraft is suddenly accessible and trendy. Many of us are reveling in the magical community (literally and figuratively) that the internet gives us. We can connect with others like us! No matter where we live, we can learn from others and share our experiences. It’s amazing!

But there’s another side to this coin. With witchcraft taking the world like a new self-help regimen, it needs to be accessible to everyone. It needs to be safe, it needs to be clean, it needs to be easy, and (if it’s going to sell) it needs to be cute.

Enter Britton Boyd and J. Allen Cross: two badass witches and practitioners of folk magic in Oregon, asking us to learn our histories, learn our traditions, and be ready to get messy. Sometimes, following your desire sucks.

When asked about why we start our own businesses or what our dream life looks like, we’ll often say: “I want to be able to make my own choices!” or “I want to have options and be able to follow my passions!”, right?

When we say these things, when we crave this life of opportunity, we are forgetting that part of the process of choosing is the act of letting go, saying no, and closing doors. When we choose one thing, we are rejecting others and that can be painful.

March is a culling.

This month, the cards are finding us stuck in the resentment we feel when we face the reality that we actually have to CHOOSE something over something else… and it sucks. It just sucks. We want to grow our business and grow our family. We want to launch new offers and we want to rest. We want to go two totally different directions in our business, but there are only so many hours in a day, in a week, in a month, and we have to choose. And, in choosing, in prioritizing, we might lose something we like. We might lose something we love.

March is a month of tension between the grief of choice and the joy of stepping into the life we truly desire. It is acknowledging both the pain and the excitement of prioritizing what we want and what we need. This month, the cards are clear in asking us to be real about what we want to DO, not how we want to be SEEN, and move forward from there.

Do you love your work because you love being recognized as an expert on it? Or do you love your work because of what you spend your time doing? How would your business change if you didn’t consider what other people thought and you only worried about what brought you fulfillment?

Protecting Your Business Vision Feb 18, 2021

How do you take feedback?

Do you go looking for it? Do you ignore it? Do you filter it? Are you compelled to respond to all of it?

Feedback is so engaging and I don’t know many entrepreneurs who don’t get emotionally pulled into other people’s opinions about how they are running their business.

We created our business to serve people and so we want people to be pleased! It is hard to hear that someone wants us or our business to be different. It can be hard to say no to people who want more from us.

But we also need feedback! Without feedback from our customers, we are bulldozing ahead with our ideas without actually checking to see what is serving people! And no matter how much we love our work and how great we think our ideas are, if they aren’t connecting with the people we want to serve, then they are not going to be successful.

Not all problems are yours to solve! Learning to tune out feedback from folks who want you to BE different is one of the most important emotional skills business owners can develop!

Too much feedback can distort your personal vision for your business and the work you want to be doing in the world. Not enough feedback can keep you ignorant as to why your business isn’t growing in the ways that you hoped. As always: balance is key!

So, this episode is dedicated to just that: Collecting, filtering, and managing feedback while holding your personal vision in the center of all your actions. It is possible to be solutions-oriented when it comes to feedback!

Scaling is a hip word in the business community and with good reason. Scaling can be the answer to sustaining a small business in the long run. But what actually IS scaling?

You can make more money WITHOUT scaling by either working more or charging more! That is called business growth. Scaling is about getting out of the 1:1 ratio of work input and compensation output.

In other words: You put the work in on the front end to make a wide-reaching offer easily repeatable, so that you get to reap the rewards over the life of your business.

I see people make a lot of the same mistakes when they first attempt to scale their business and some of the most common questions in my DMs right now are about how to do this without burning out!

Do your days add up to the life you want?

There is no getting out of the mundane work of life and I am not here to tell you that every moment of your life has to be a revelation. There are going to be days that we are enthusiastic about and there are going to be days that we are bored. There are going to be happy days and there are going to be sad days. This month, the cards are indicating that we may be teetering into overwhelm and wondering if this is really the life we want.

February is asking us to clear the fog and ask: “Why am I doing this?”

Maybe that clarity will show you that the boring days are supporting a life and work you truly love.

Maybe that clarity will show you that the work you need to make a hard turn in your work.

This month, the cards are asking us to make strong decisions about what we truly value. They are asking us to make sure that we are centering our daily lives in the building of our businesses.

2021 Business Predictions Jan 14, 2021

The illusion of stability is gone.

If 2020 and the first couple weeks of 2021 have taught us anything, it’s that. Predictions feel challenging when our world is being turned upside down over and over again: A pandemic, uprisings, an attempted coup. How are we supposed to keep showing up to our daily grind as if everything is normal?

We’re not. And that is the gift and freedom that owning a small business gives us. When we have ourselves and our ideal clients to answer to, it is imperative that we are honest, compassionate, and flexible. We are not Amazon. We don’t guarantee 2 day delivery in the midst of a coup. We are humans living in the world we are creating.

I say all the time: Owning a business continues to be a revolutionary act because it brings your values into the world. When we are able to make our values into practices that touch other people, we create new worlds.

And here we are, in a new world! Small business owners have the opportunity to adapt and respond to it. But adapting isn’t just reactionary. It still requires thought, intention, and planning. So, this episode is a look ahead into 2021 and what my “spidey senses” are telling me that we can predict about business in the new year.
