    What’s in a “Good Job”? May 20, 2021
    Show notes

Who tells you that you’re doing a good job?

If you are a grown-up, solo entrepreneur, you don’t have a boss or a teacher or a parent telling you that you checked all your boxes and gotten a good report card. So, whose voice do you hear at the end of the day when you declare “I did a good job!” or “I didn’t measure up”?

Is that voice measuring your work against your values? Or the values of a system you are trying to create your way out of? Do you WANT to believe the archetypes of The Boss, The Teacher, and The Parent that live in our minds rent free?

As an entrepreneur, YOU get to decide what defines a good job! YOU get to decide what metrics you use to define good work. YOUR values are what matter!

This week on the podcast, I am picking apart the concept of goodness, redefining what a “Good Job” is, and giving you two steps to reorient your relationship to success and feedback.

Tune in this week for a reminder that a values-led business requires using those same values to assess our own personal success.

    SHOW NOTES

1:13– Who says you’re doing a “Good Job”?

    2:42– What’s behind a “Good Job”?

Breath Liberation with Chauna Bryant May 13, 2021
    Show notes

    Our students are real people!

Many of us get into spiritual work to “help people,” but the world of spiritual learning can be fraught with dehumanization and forced vulnerability. When we are taught practices through experiences that demand we leave our own needs and perspectives behind, it can be easy to turn around and pass that on to our own students.

What becomes possible when we strip back the layers of ego and remember that we are working with real people?

This week on the podcast, I am thrilled to talk with Chauna Bryant. Chauna is a Breathwork Meditation facillitator, and GYROTONIC and Pilates instructor who has just launched her own trauma-informed, anti-racist, inclusive breathwork facilitator training.

In this episode, Chauna and I talk about the ethics of leadership and becoming spiritual teachers. We talk about the corruption we have seen passed down from gurus to teachers and the recent wave of pushback we are seeing from students. Chauna shares her experience of pulling away from her teacher’s lineage to teach breathwork that integrates, rather than erases, the politicized experience of living in this world.

This episode is about building the trainings we wish we’d had access to, so we can disrupt the egocentric guru bullshit that is so rampant in spiritual teaching and mentorship. It’s about the power of collaboration, the wisdom of giving credit, and the grace of admitting when we are wrong.

Tune in this week for more on trauma-informed teaching and a reminder that you should be able to bring your whole self to your spiritual development.

    SHOW NOTES

8:53 – What are breathwork and pilates?

15:37 – Stepping into leadership and why Chauna created her own training.

25:53 – Guru bullshit. Learning to embrace that we don’t know everything and the ethics of spiritual training.

    45:38 – Chauna’s virtual Breathwork Facilitator Training.

May Energy Reading Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

    Is money causing you grief?

In our society, money is not only the hard currency that allows us to get our basic needs met, it is also the currency of possibility.

    Money is power.

Money is the potential for action.

Money is the possibility of change.

There is grief in accepting this. There is grief in choosing to engage a broken system to take care of ourselves and contribute to our communities. When we look around at the disturbing relationship our culture has with money, it is easy to be repulsed by it. It is equally easy to give into the scarcity mindset that capitalism pushes and cling harder and harder to the resources we accumulate.

Our tendency is to either push money away, in solidarity with people or push people away, in our fear of losing money.

May is calling us to be in a different relationship with money. May is calling us to embrace the currency of possibility.

What happens when we have enough money to thrive?

What happens when our reaction to gaining resources is to draw people in closer?

What happens when the power that comes with money is allowed to shift paradigms, instead of perpetuating them?

Tune in this week for our May Energy Reading to hear more about the change that is possible when we release our dreams of utopia to take action in the present world around us.

    Self-Funding Your Business Apr 22, 2021
    Show notes

Where does your business cash come from?

Small business loans! Seed funding! Investors! Start-up financing!

These options can sound intimidating, and may deter people from stepping into entrepreneurship. It’s a lot of paperwork that requires a lot of promises, and one of the top things that microbusiness owners want is flexibility.

The good news? You probably don’t need them!

Most of the businesses I help people with are self-funded, which means that they started small and use their own assets to grow their business. This can be as simple as pulling some cash out of your savings account, or keeping a part-time job on the side. But what about when you need to invest to take your business to the next level and you don’t have the money in your back pocket?

This week on the podcast we are talking quick cash so you can learn the steps of self-funding: what it means, how to do it, and when to implement it.

Tune in this week to hear about my favorite tried-and-true funding ideas and what my next adventures in leveling up are bringing to my business.

    SHOW NOTES

Customer Service for a Scalable Business Apr 15, 2021
    Show notes

Are you prepared to support your incoming customers?

Y’all know how much I love talking about scaling as a way to make small businesses sustainable over the long-haul! Getting out of the 1:1 ratio of input to income is life-changing. But scaling is not some magic business-hack that means less work across the board.

The point of scaling is to find a way to let your work help more customers than it could if you were doing one-on-one work. Yes, that means LESS creation work. It also means MORE customers! And those customers will need SUPPORT.

This episode is all about making sure you are ready to support the customer load of your dreams. We are talking timing, systems, boundaries, and team!

When do you need to implement more intensive customer support structures?

What systems will ensure that all of your customers are supported without you glued to your inbox all day?

What boundaries can you have with your customers and with your business to protect you from burnout?

What do you do when your customers need more support than you are able or willing to make time for?

I answer all these questions, highlight some of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs making in their scalable offers, and tell you about the tools and tips that have worked for me in my business.

Tune in this week and remember: the customer isn’t always right, but they do deserve the support you promised!

    SHOW NOTES

2:45– Validating your offer: When to create more customer support systems

8:30– How do we scale customer service? Systems!

16:34– Boundaries are your best friend.

Episode 149: How To Make Something New Apr 08, 2021
    Show notes

    Your ideas are not original!

    Ouch.

I know that sounds like a slap when we are all learning to tread around the idea of originality. The internet has exponentially increased how many ideas, concepts, and inspirations we are bombarded with daily and it can be overwhelming!

With so many good ideas out there, are there any left to be had?

If I was really inspired by someone’s concept, does it mean I am stealing their work?

Are you afraid of acting on your ideas because you’re worried they aren’t original enough? OR are you acting on every idea without a second thought to where they come from or what they’ll do for you?

If you have listened to me for a long time, you know that I believe that there is no such thing as an original idea, but I don’t find that discouraging and I don’t want you to, either! When we embrace the fact that we are inspired and influenced by everything around us, we can be intentional about WHAT we allow to influence us, HOW we create something from multiple sources of inspiration, and WHEN we credit others work.

In this episode, I take you through different ways of approaching ideation and what phases of business I find are the best fit for each. I talk about my own process for coming up with new ideas for my business and deciding which ones to chase. I also offer TONS of practical recommendations for apps, tools, and tips for starting to take your own thought-based labor seriously.

Tune in this week for an intensive on the science of creation and stay for my hot product idea: handknit underwear patterns. Seriously, who is going to run with it?

    SHOW NOTES

    1:10–What is an idea?

    6:25– Two perspectives on ideation.

15:48– How to capture your inspiration and ideas.

    21:22–Transforming inspiration into ideas.

    37:28– Three step recap.

Shame Is Not A Sales Tactic Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Are you being shamed into purchases?

Current social media expectations can leave us feeling forced into a position previously reserved for celebrities: giving all of ourselves to the public. This is making it impossible to engage in the modern world and maintain privacy.

Over the past year, we’ve talked a lot on the podcast about boundaries and giving yourself the space to exist off screen. We often feel an urge to share, be it performance based or because it is effective in sales. We can exploit ourselves by sharing our feelings, hardships, and challenges because it speaks to the reality tv nature of our society.

This week on the podcast we shift away from the recent themes of serious business trainings and into the feels. Y’all I talk. A lot. I talk about how I show up in my business and the structures that allow my business to function when my mental illness wants to take the reins. I dive into some of my fears and shame and how social media is fueling that shame under the guise of so-called ethical business and critiquing the status quo.

Some marketing posts are being designed to make you feel shame about your approach to business, about what you’ve been trained to do, or even about who you learned from and their way of teaching.

Join us this week as I welcome you into my feels to examine the social media trend that may be motivating your decisions: shame.
