Mental Fitness | Awareness to action, taking care of mind, body, spirit, meditation and transformation practices and experiences Jun 18, 2024

It's Men's Mental Health Awareness month – John and Mike share an initiative we're calling the "mental fitness gym" where we do daily practices with the Heare community to improve our mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. We discuss some fundamentals of physical and mental wellness: adequate sleep, sunlight, nutrition, movement, and social connection; as well as practices and tools that have helped us have transformational experiences such as meditations, breathwork, experiential exercises and therapies, cold plunges, retreats, and guided experiences with coaches and mentors. John shares some principles he learned from his recent intensive training such as movement and the body remembers what the mind does not, and Mike shares how Inside Out 2 represented core belief systems in such an interesting way. We touch on childhood development, how some core beliefs are formed, how we can repair as parents, and the inevitability of forming some limiting or false beliefs. We discuss doing the work to identify and challenge these beliefs in adulthood and to identify the truths that empower us and enhance our lives – all while acknowledging that the work is ongoing and as we strenghten our mental fitness, we grow in resilience and our ability to choose how to respond, rather than react to, life's circumstances.

Brandon Clift is an emotional intelligence coach, a leader of a men's group in Chattanooga, Tennessee called Men Who Chatt, and an involved member of and podcast host for the ManKind Project. He shares his story of initially viewing men's groups with skepticism to finding out for himself the transformational value of these groups and of doing the inner work, on a weekly basis and at impactful retreats like the New Warrior Training Adventure. Brandon's openness, courage, and vulnerability led him to share personal stories of facing challenges, taking ownership of his choices, and finding strength in integrity, accountability, and brotherhood. We discuss some inner child work, our life mission statements along with our shadow missions, and how we continue to do the work.

JR Patterson | from rock bottom to licensed therapist, setting a baseline of feeling good, our internal compass, the drama triangle Jun 05, 2024

JR Patterson is a therapist who has been through his own process of hitting rock bottom and discovering resources that were helpful in his recovery, as well sorting out what therapy was not helpful. From this lived experience, he now helps people on their journeys and we touched on just a few foundational principles: establishing the baseline of peace and joy; the inner compass which comprises of awareness of our sensations, emotions, desire, and values; the drama triangle of persecutor, feeling of victimization, and rescuer, and how to break out of that cycle.
JR has worked with Justin and Mike and their spouses, has been a great resource, guide, and teacher, and is also a musician (check out John Pattern on Spotify).

Ari Ehrlich | moving to Israel, journey of healing and becoming a guide, somatic modalities and the importance of spirituality May 28, 2024

Ari Ehrlich joins the podcast from Israel where he moved a few years ago and shares some of the notable differences of the culture and community. He tells his story of burning out in spiritual studies, and then recovering and growing through practices, modalities, and techniques from inspired guides and teachers while discovering his own gifts to help himself and others on their healing journeys. Ari shares some principles and stories of somatic modalities (definition of somatic: "relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind") and the subtle, but profound, impact they can have in helping us to change and overcome. He shares the importance of spirituality in connection with the body and mind for our overall happiness and wellness.

From a panic attack while working at DoorDash during the company's biggest stages of hypergrowth, to then competing and placing in the top 3 of a triathlon and still being able to show up for his daughter's soccer game, Nathan shares his experiences with self-awareness, growth, and changing our limiting stories. He outlines some principles from his new book about toxic vs. true authenticity, processing emotions in healthy ways (like the unsent angry letter), defining the vision for our future selves, and taking the small steps to create evidence supporting our changing stories. Josh Prows is a photographer and videographer that joined the Heare team from nearly the beginning and captured several key events with professionalism and authenticity. He's had a unique perspective on these experiences as both a participant and an observer, and has done a lot of his own internal work and personal development as he's navigated through life's challenges, including a divorce and then later getting married, stepping into a creative career and entrepreneurship. With an always inquisitive mind, his wisdom is beyond his years and his ability to empathize and connect with brothers has been a powerful addition to each event, beyond documenting transformational and even sacred moments for the members of the community. Deeper insights from Zion | Replacing false beliefs with truth, identity & worth, tai chi, breathwork, I AM statements Feb 06, 2024

In this powerful episode we discuss several deeper insights from the Zion retreat: principles of transformation of our minds and hearts, replacing false or limiting beliefs with truth, and being anchored in our true identity and self-worth. We also touch on the idea of moving with ease, not dis-ease, and to release through tai chi. We discuss the sacred breathwork meditation and the emotional releases and spiritual experiences that many of us felt. The closing circle was an outpouring of love and support for each other, and an opportunity to state our false or limiting belief, and to replace it with a statement of truth which was echoed back by all of the brothers in the circle. A truly impactful, transformative experience.

Or miss the good ole days of skinny dipping or being in the locker room with the boys? What does modern male platonic intimacy look like?
Do I belong here if I'm not ____ (religious, straight, married, a father, etc.)?
And how these questions give men opportunities to support each other, but also to challenge each other to grow. As John said, "Come as you are but don't plan to stay as you are. Let's grow together."
