020: How Your Mouth Microbiome Can Mess Up Your Skin w/ Trina Felber Mar 14, 2019
    Show notes

I talk a lot about the strong link between the gut and the skin: Skin issues can occur because of gut dysbiosis! What might surprise you is that, like the gut, the mouth has a microbiome! My colleague and friend Trina Felber joins me today to discuss how our oral care affects gut health and, by extension, the skin.

Trina is the Creator and CEO of Primal Life Organics, a premier, all-natural dental care company that focuses on oral health as the gateway to internal health. She believes that the antiseptic products we use in our mouths are doing more harm than good! After more than 25 years as a registered nurse, Trina has transitioned into an oral health expert. She created natural products to biohack your dental health for stronger, cleaner, whiter teeth and improved overall health. Her entrepreneurial skills and business-savvy mindset are an inspiration to women everywhere.

In this episode, we debunk the notion that all bacteria is bad. Trina explains why good bacteria in the mouth is vital to our health, and how we can work on restoring our mouth microbiome.

Have you tried a natural oral care product? Tell us about it in the comments!

    In this episode

    • How working as a nurse in the burn unit impacted Trina's perspective and knowledge of the skin
    • How does the oral microbiome affect the gut?
    • What should we be looking for in our oral and dental care?
    • Why clay is an effective, gentle teeth cleanser

    Quotes

“Skin is your first line of defense. It has a lot to with your immune system, and almost every organ is impacted by your skin.” [2:40]

“We've been brainwashed into believing that all germs are bad.” [4:49]

“If you don't have good bacteria, the bad bacteria can hide in the pockets in your gums and enter into your bloodstream, and cause internal infection.” [9:19]

"People have noticed that when they change their oral care, they do get better skin in the long run." [12:52]

A lot of people with rosacea are struggling to understand what is causing it. It’s a condition that can make you feel self-conscious and frustrated. My personal experience has taught me that to understand rosacea, you need to understand its underlying causes. One of the major causes, we’re learning, is small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). My guest today, Dr. Leonard Weinstock, is an expert on this and I am so happy he joins us to help break it all down.

Dr. Weinstock is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine with his own private practice. He’s also an associate professor in clinical medicine and surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, abstracts, and editorials on the subject of gastroenterology. His particular research focuses on SIBO and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).

When inflammatory chemicals leave the gut and end up where they don’t belong, so many other problems can occur, such as rosacea. It’s crucially important for anyone with rosacea to listen to all their body’s symptoms, not just the ones on the skin. That way they can address the root cause of the problem.

Have you seen a link between SIBO and rosacea? Leave a comment!

    In this episode:

    • How SIBO can cause rosacea
    • Understanding that a problem in the gut, like SIBO, will manifest as a problem elsewhere
    • What to consider when taking medication for GI issues and rosacea

    Quotes:

“It all comes down to what’s happening in the lining of the intestine, what kind of cells are being attracted.” [4:40]

“It is important to consider both with and without GI symptoms that your GI tract is the trigger.” [9:55]

“Gut health is important. Not only is it diet related, because if you have this increase in intestinal permeability because of bacterial overgrowth, you want healthy products that heal the gut linings.” [14:46]

    018: SIBO-Skin Rash Connection w/ Amy Hollenkamp Mar 07, 2019
    Show notes

It’s sometimes difficult to connect certain conditions on the skin with something that’s lurking underneath the surface, specifically in your intestines. But there are so many direct relationships between your gut health and your skin. My guest, Amy Hollenkamp, has expert knowledge of a particularly little-known condition, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth).

Amy is a dietitian and holistic health coach. She helps SIBO sufferers find relief through diet and lifestyle changes. Amy takes a scientific approach to discuss SIBO, its symptoms, and treatments. I’m a huge fan of her work and so glad she could join us today!

In this episode, we break down the connection between SIBO and a host of chronic skin conditions. SIBO is often a difficult diagnosis to get, so we discuss what you should talk about with your doctor if you suspect you might have it.

Have you suspected you might have a condition like SIBO but struggled to get a diagnosis? Tell us about it in the comments!

    In this episode

    • What exactly SIBO is, why it’s often misdiagnosed as IBS, and how it can cause skin manifestations
    • What to do if you think you have SIBO and why you shouldn’t try to treat it yourself
    • The six ways that SIBO can disrupt the skin

    Quotes

“Rosacea is ten times more prevalent in people with SIBO than healthy controls. You’re going to see more skin manifestations in people with SIBO versus people who don’t have SIBO.” [5:15]

“There’s this fine balance that you have to maneuver as a clinician to help people with SIBO. You have to be aware of each case and what root causal factors need to be addressed.” [12:24]

“If your gut is out of whack, your hormones are going to be of whack.” [15:50]

017: The Dark Side Of The Clean Skin Care Industry w/ Rachel Pachivas Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

The skincare industry is a complicated one. Very often, even when you are buying products that say they're for sensitive skin or dry skin or eczema, etc., the products you use are not actually serving you.

In fact, they could actually be worsening your skin conditions. Especially if the company is "greenwashing" their branding and message to make it look more natural than it really is!

Today I'll be talking to Rachel Pachivas, COO of Annmarie Skincare. She keeps the company growing with grace. Since 2012 she has expanded the business while keeping the culture aligned with their values. Her main roles are behind the scenes operations—product research and development, branding and style, budgeting, and HR—all while leading and growing the team, and working to increase education on organics, chemicals, and the skin care industry.

Annmarie Skin Care provides organic and wild-crafted skincare to people around the world, with the goal to move harmful chemicals off of the shelves and out of the industry.

In this episode, we discuss why your skin products could be causing more triggers, inflammation, and flares.

Do you use natural skincare as part of your protocol? Let us know in the comments!

    In this episode

    • Why mainstream skin products aren't necessarily safe for your skin
    • Why water is the main ingredient in many mainstream skincare products
    • Some harmful chemicals to look out for on skincare product ingredient lists
    • How Annmarie Skincare products differ from mainstream big brands
    • Oils that are good for the skin
    • What is greenwashing?

    Quotes

“I think there is a lot of greenwashing going on and there is a lot of terminology that we think is going to be safe and is going to allow us to use certain products that we see in the drugstore, but no, they're not. The majority of products that we see in drugstores are conventionally made and mass-produced.” [3:32]

“Fragrance has phthalates in them, and phthalates are hormone disruptors. Phthalates also cause a whole variety of issues, like diabetes and weight gain and obesity and endocrine disruption.” [7:33]

“In our products you definitely will see aloes, oils (carrier oils and seed oils and herb-infused oils) as the bulk of the formula. So you're getting a bottle full of nature, and herbs, and extracts, and things that are constantly nourishing your skin.” [10:09]

Got ongoing adult acne? You’ve probably tried the soaps, lotions, and medications for acne, but nothing works.

What if the source of the problem is fluoride in your water? We are learning more and more about how fluoride can negatively impact your skin in ways you might not have realized.

My guest, Melissa Gallico, is the author of The Hidden Cause of Acne and F is for Fluoride. And does she know how to research! Melissa is a former military intelligence officer, Fulbright scholar, and intelligence specialist at the FBI. This may not sound like the CV of an expert in fluoride, but while working all over the world, Melissa noticed that her chronic acne cleared up whenever she wasn’t exposed to fluoride. That sent her on a research mission to discover just what the link between fluoride and skin conditions is.

Fluoride is in more places than most of us realize. We need to watch our exposure to these sources which can turn up in unexpected places. Melissa shares her discoveries about where fluoride is found (chicken bones, really?) and what you can do to limit your exposure to it.

Have you taken steps to avoid fluoride? Tell me about it in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • The many different ways we are exposed to fluoride in our environment
    • The various skin issues that fluoride exposure can cause
    • What common foods contain high amounts of fluoride
    • How to protect your pets from fluoride exposure
    • What to look for in a fluoride-removing filter

    Quotes:

“I tried drinking non-fluoridated water and right away I saw such a dramatic difference.” [4:06]

“The only thing predictable about how someone responds to fluoride is that the response will be unpredictable.” [7:33]

“Fluoride accumulates in your bones over time. The estimated half-life of fluoride in bone is 20 years. So when you consume fluoride today, and it is sequestered in your bones, half of it is still there 20 years from now.” [11:14]

015: Alternative Remedies For Lichen Sclerosus w/ Dr. Anna Cabeca Feb 24, 2019
    Show notes

Many people suffer from Lichen Sclerosus, a chronic skin condition that usually affects prepubescent girls or postmenopausal women. However, because it affects the genitals, talking about it can be uncomfortable and many women suffer in silence.

Today I'll be talking to my good friend, Dr. Anna Cabeca. She is an Emory-trained Obstetrician and Gynecologist, a menopause and sexual health expert, and international speaker and educator. Anna is also a truly wonderful person, and I feel very grateful to have known her for the last few years.

Dr. Anna has created top-selling products like Julva® (an anti-aging feminine cream for women), Mighty Maca® Plus (a superfood hormone-balancing health drink), as well as online programs such as Magic Menopause, Sexual CPR, and Women's Restorative Health Bootcamp.

PLUS she's got a new book coming out called The Hormone Fix!

In this episode, we cover the often awkward topic of Lichen Sclerosus, as well as conventional and alternative treatment options for the skin condition.

Have you used Julva® for feminine health issues? Let us know in the comments!

    In this episode

    • What is Lichen Sclerosus?
    • Who is typically affected by Lichen Sclerosus?
    • Treatments for this skin condition
    • Is there a connection between gut dysbiosis and Lichen Sclerosus?
    • What is Julva and how can it help with vaginal health?

    Quotes

“Just sitting down, riding a bike, jogging—all of those things are affected by Lichen Sclerosus. It just affects our quality of life. It hurts, it's irritated, and that's why I really am so passionate about getting natural solutions to women as much as possible.” [3:57]

“If we haven't addressed the underlying cause, it can come back. Treating for anti-fungal, gluten-sensitivity, food sensitivities, all the way through—that is essential to healing from Lichen Sclerosus.” [4:55]

“I always say the vagina is an extension of the GI tract in a way.” [5:50]

“Hair gets better, skin gets better, moisture gets better, cravings get gone...all of those things get better when we get rid of candida." [13:58]

014: What You Need To Know About CBD Oil & Your Skin w/ Pamela Orth Feb 21, 2019
    Show notes

This SPONSORED episode is bought to you with deep thanks from Restorative Botanicals - a leader of organic CBD supplements!

CBD has boomed in the US in recent years, but there is still a lot of confusion and misinformation about exactly what it is, and what it can do for our health.

Pamela Orth is the Partner and Director of Business Development at Restorative Botanicals, one of the leaders of certified organic supplements, oils, and foods. She has hands-on experience developing two skincare lines. Pamela is also very passionate about health and wellness, and trains people on the ins and outs of CBD and the endocannabinoid system.

In this exciting conversation, we delve into CBD and its uses for chronic skin rashes and overall wellness.

Have you used CBD in your skincare protocol? Let us know in the comments!

    In this episode

    • The difference between CBD and THC
    • Endocannabinoid receptors: what they are, and how CBD oil (an adaptogen) is connected
    • Uses for CBD oil
    • How CBD could be a helpful addition to your skin protocol
    • The potential benefits of taking CBD orally in conjunction with applying it topically

    Quotes

“CBD is one of the easiest and most accessible cannabinoid, or molecule, in the hemp plant. It is also found in the marijuana plant; it's found in artichokes, asparagus, arugula, etc. THC, the cannabinoid or the molecule that would get people high, is only found in the marijuana plant.” [1:58]

“Skin conditions can be eased and lessened with the use of a cannabinoid topically, and I firmly believe internally as well. You have to address things from both sides.” [13:12]

“To really gain the full benefit of any supplement or nutritional change, you need to do it from the inside out.” [18:17]

013: What's Really Going On Behind Adult Acne? w/ Brie Weiselman Feb 19, 2019
    Show notes

Most people think of acne as a teenage affliction. But there are many adults with pimples, many of whom even had great skin as teens. Brie Wieselman studies an often overlooked cause of chronic acne in women. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is more common than many people realize. Even though it can lead to a number of conditions, as you are about to hear, it is totally manageable with expert help.

Brie is a digestive and hormonal health specialist who works with women around the world in her online practice. She also specializes in helping people with a range of digestive issues so that they can build a healthy microbiome. Her programs integrate functional and Chinese medicinal approaches. I have personally worked with Brie several times and can vouch for her knowledge and expertise.

In today’s episode, we dive deep into the issues surrounding PCOS and why acne is more than just a simple skin condition, but can potentially be a sign of a more complex hormonal imbalance. We look closely into some hormonal issues and how they are connected to the skin. The hormonal component of understanding skin issues is complex and it’s important to find an expert like Brie when dealing with it.

Have you wondered if a hormonal condition like PCOS could be causing your acne? What have you done to address it? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode

    • Some of the common causes of chronic adult acne, many of which people don’t even know they have
    • What polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) looks like and why it’s more common than you might think
    • What questions you should ask your doctor if you are concerned you might have a hormonal imbalance
    • Why acne is often a symptom of a much more complex problem

    Quotes

“I’m talking about women with acne. And this could be any aged woman with acne, so it really could be applied to somebody in her teen years, but this becomes more obvious when it’s acne that showed up either a little bit later in life or that persisted after the teen years despite treatment.” [1:56]

“People with PCOS are born just more susceptible to developing a sensitivity to our insulin and that will drive this problem. That can be managed with diet, lifestyle, nutrition, and other therapeutic steps once you know what’s happening, but before it can just look like this bunch of symptoms that’s showing up in someone.” [8:02]

“No one is looking at the big picture and educating their patients and saying ‘Hey, you have this condition. Here’s what it means to live with it and here’s how to keep yourself healthy over your whole life.’” [11:13]

Hormones are a huge piece of the wellness puzzle, and unbalanced hormones can certainly lead to a whole host of skin issues. However, there’s more and more evidence showing us the role that essential oils can play in helping to rebalance hormones. This is particularly true when it comes to stress management. That’s why I’m super excited to share today’s guest with you.

Dr. Mariza Snyder is many things. She’s a functional practitioner and the author of six amazing books. For the past ten years, she has been giving talks and lectures at wellness centers, hospitals, conferences, and corporations on hormone health, essential oils, nutrition, and detoxification. Even more, Dr. Mariza is the host of the Essentially You podcast which helps people find empowerment in their health and wellness journey.

In this interview, we dive into some of the amazing roles that essential oils can play in your wellness journey. From helping to get stress under control to balancing hormones to help clear up your skin, essential oils are a great tool to have in your toolkit.

Are essential oils part of your wellness practice? Tell me about it in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • Essential oils as a key part of the hormone balancing solution
    • Why getting stress under control goes a long way to a healthy hormone balance
    • Methods for applying essential oils in ways that are kind to your skin
    • Safely using essential oils to treat baby’s skin rashes
    • A breakdown of Dr. Mariza’s new book and how it can guide you in your use of oils and hormone health

    Quotes:

“So often what I find is that when we’re in the middle of these journeys, when we’re struggling with our hormones, when we’re struggling with energy issues, when we’re having mood swings or cravings, that we can utilize the power and effectiveness of these oils, and they literally produce a result in about a minute.” [3:24]

“Your body just doesn’t know what to do with stress and it causes more skin irritations.” [11:51]

“So often women are like, what is happening inside of my body that’s causing this biochemical reaction? So I really want to give women some context. If we don’t feel well and our bodies aren’t working the way that they used to, I want women to really say, ‘now I have a really clear understanding of what’s happening in my body.’”[14:26]

011: The Role Of Probiotics When It Comes To Skin Health w/ Kiran Krishnan Feb 14, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to part two of an incredible and mind-blowing interview I had with microbiologist Kiran Krishnan. Here we continue our conversation about the link between the gut and the skin and the role that probiotics can play in maintaining a healthy microbiome.

If you haven't listened to part one with Kiran, please head here to listen to it first!

My guest, Kiran Krishnan is deeply involved in the nutrition and dietary supplement market. He has a strict research background having spent many years in research and development in molecular medicine and microbiology. He is also the co-founder and partner in his nutritional research and development company Nu Science Trading. Most notably he is the co-founder and chief scientific officer at Microbiomes Lab where he makes MegaSporeBiotic, one of my all-time favorite probiotics.

In this part of the interview, we talk about how we can use probiotics as a natural defense to ward off bad bacteria from our skin. In fact, you can apply many probiotics directly to your skin to help with many issues and we discuss how to best do that. The right probiotics can even help you tackle certain more hard to control issues like candida overgrowth.

Have you had success using probiotics to treat a chronic skin issue? Tell me about it in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • How good bacteria on your skin will provide a defense against the bad bacteria you don’t want there
    • Just what spore-based probiotics are and their unique benefits for you
    • Kiran’s dos and don’ts for applying probiotics topically to make the good bacteria on your skin happy
    • Coconut oil's role as an antimicrobial and how it can kill both helpful and harmful bacteria
    • What makes candida overgrowth so hard to get rid of and how probiotics can help

    Quotes:

“One of the things that we know about the skin is there’s a couple of classes of important bacteria that keep the skin healthy.
