Ep 15. The Glow Up - My love letter to Black Women & How I found my purpose Jan 15, 2019
    Show notes

As black women, sometimes it feels like we don't get the support or recognition, resources, or love we deserve. I want to make sure that I'm creating a space for us and providing things that help us to feel confident, supported, energized, and anything else we need to succeed in our business and career. That's exactly why I started The Glow Up Podcast. In this episode, I talk about my personal journey as a black woman navigating through life, how the podcast aligns with my purpose, and what I did to figure all of this out.

One of the best parts of the episode is that I talk about exactly what I did to find my purpose.

I've been actively trying to seek it out for so long and it's been in front of my face! It was not easy. Actually, for me, it was really, really hard.

Here are some of the things I did:

    1. I thought about what gets me excited. What can I do or talk about that gets me excited? Don't think about how you can make money from it right away
    2. I thought about some of the things I hate doing
    3. I tried doing a lot of different things to see what I liked
    4. Based on the things that I like, I talked to people that are already doing what I like to see what my life could be like in 10 to 20 years. If the answer is yes, bingo. If the answer is no, it's back to the drawing board
    5. I was open to receive whatever it was that was supposed to come to me, even if I didn't like it
    6. I talked to my close friends and family about what they thought I was good or not good at

Are you looking to figure out what your purpose is in life? This Purposeful life worksheet will help you to go through the steps that I did to help you flesh out what your passion and purpose in life is

Ep 14. My Fab Finance founder Tonya Rapley gets candid about her entrepreneur glow up Jan 08, 2019
    Show notes

In 2007, Tonya Rapley was fighting for her life in a relationship that was physically, emotionally, and economically abusive. Today, Tonya Rapley is an internationally recognized millennial money expert and founder of the award-winning site, My Fab Finance.

She is the author of the Amazon best-seller, The Money Manual: A Practical Guide To Help You Succeed on Your Financial Journey and co-host of the Colorfull Lives podcast. In 2014, she graced the cover of Black Enterprise magazine and was deemed the "New Face of Wealth Building". Tonya's mission is to help millennials break the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck so that they can live lives they love.

One thing that I love about Tonya is that she creates resources and content based on what she's learned. She started My fab finance after she had issues with money herself, without having a background in finance. She's a testament for anyone who thinks they can't do something they don't have experience in.

When I recorded this episode, she was still pregnant, but she's since had her beautiful baby boy so congratulations to her!

In this episode we talk about:

    • Transitioning into full-time entrepreneurship
    • Making every major decision a financial decision
    • Community helping you to get where you are - no one is self-made
    • How important accountability partners are
    • Pivoting your career completely

Ep 13. Start where you are, then keep moving forward - with Gala Jackson Jan 03, 2019
    Show notes

What was the last thing that you did that you really enjoyed that made a difference? That might just be what you're meant to do. That's what The Glow Up's episode 13 guest Gala Jackson, did and now it's her full-time job to help other people do the same. Gala is the owner of Interview snob, a company that helps job seekers discover, articulate, and leverage their value. In this episode, she gives real advice for millennials looking to advance in their career. It's a great double episode because she speaks about corporate life and entrepreneur life.

I met Gala when I was in grad school in Atlanta and she was my boss in academic affairs. I was there when she handed in her notice and I remember looking at her in awe. Now 4 years later, I'm on a similar path so I love that I get to circle back with her and get to talk to her.

    Things we talk about:

    • Finding your purpose
    • Transitioning from working full time to being a full-time entrepreneur
    • Challenges for new entrepreneurs
    • Best pieces of advice on how to be successful

Ep 12. Quit making excuses - with Jasmine Johnson Dec 19, 2018
    Show notes

Have you ever had a situation happen to you that you didn't think you could bounce back from? That's what Jasmine Johnson had when she found out she was pregnant right before she went to med school. She talks about how she had to get over the "shame" and opinion of others to accomplish what she thought at one point was impossible. If she can go to med school with a family, you have no excuse!

Now she's a doctor specializing high risk pregnancies and we had a great conversation around her story, how she made it by staying focused and relying on her support system. But my favorite part of the episode was discussing why black women are the most high risks for death during pregnancy. She breaks it down for me why that's happening and how her role is to change this.

In this episode we talk about:

    • Black women and the maternal mortality rate being 10 times as high
    • Getting over rejection
    • Self care - making your health a priority
    • Working out to Beyonce videos - such a smart idea!
