    The Generation Splice

Hosted by retired psychologist, Dr. Raquel Martinez & Chicago film writer/programmer Raphael Jose Martinez, The Generation Splice is a podcast where a Baby Boomer mom & her millennial son attempt to splice together the generation gap, one film at a time. Every week either Raquel or Raphael select a film that means something personal to them, or speaks for their generation, and offers it up to see what the other has to say about it.

    Show notes

A spooky one for Halloween/Samhain! Raquel talks about how much this scared her and her sorority sisters when it first came out. Raphael talks about seeing the re-release in theatres and not being so impressed. How did Vatican II influence the making of this movie? What's scarier, demonic possession or a slasher killer? Is this inherently a Boomer movie cause it's the last time you could scare people this way?

Raquel and Raphael talk about Quentin Tarantino's ode to old Hollywood and LA and bring their uniquely generational takes on it. Is OUATIH a movie made for Boomers? Is the violence against women justified because of the story? Why does Raquel go and see every Tarantino movie in the theatre even though she doesn't really like them?

In their 1st full podcast, Raquel and Raphael get all Jets v. Sharks talking about 1961's WEST SIDE STORY. It's a classic, but is it too cheesy now? How does HAMILTON come into the conversation? And what was it like putting on an integrated version of WEST SIDE STORY in a small Catholic high school, just outside of St. Louis in the late '60s?

    Ep 0 - Introductions and Film Podcast 101 Oct 18, 2020
    Show notes

This is where it all starts. Dr. Raquel Martinez and her son Raphael Jose Martinez talk about just why Raquel wanted to start up this podcast and talk about movies once a week. Why in the world would a Baby Boomer mom want to subject herself to talking about movies with her millennial son?? Especially since it was her idea to begin with!
