    The Generation Splice

Hosted by retired psychologist, Dr. Raquel Martinez & Chicago film writer/programmer Raphael Jose Martinez, The Generation Splice is a podcast where a Baby Boomer mom & her millennial son attempt to splice together the generation gap, one film at a time. Every week either Raquel or Raphael select a film that means something personal to them, or speaks for their generation, and offers it up to see what the other has to say about it.

    Ep 16 - Idiocracy Jan 31, 2021
    Show notes

This week’s episode has got what plants crave, Mike Judge’s 2006 crystal ball of satire, IDIOCRACY. A 1st time watch for Raquel - and she loves the simplistic, yet thoughtful, premise. Raphael would vote for President Camacho a 3rd time, if he could. Brand culture & late-stage capitalism get discussed. Raquel appreciates that it’s juvenile but still entertaining. Raphael wonders about why Fox buried this movie’s release when Judge was making them millions with King of the Hill. Raquel likens the film to THE WIZARD OF OZ. Take a wild guess which Martinez likes, and which one hates, Beavis & Butthead. Another fun, light episode! Thank you for listening, we love you.

    Ep 15 - A Hard Day's Night Jan 24, 2021
    Show notes

Here we go, the most Boomer vs. Millennial discussion yet. Raquel and Raphael argue about Richard Lester’s 1964 Beatles mockumentary/musical, A HARD DAY’S NIGHT. Raquel shows up to record dressed like George Harrison. Raphael immediately pulls his jaded punk rocker card & says he hates the Beatles. Is this film the direct precursor to MTV and music videos? This one veers from film discussion to straight up Beatles talk. Raquel reveals who her favorite Beatle was. Raphael explains where his Beatles cutoff point is, and why. Raphael thinks the Beatles look like the average mod – Raquel is insulted. Raphael throws down the gauntlet and says that the Brits don’t actually understand rock’n’roll. Has the Beatles influence on music and pop culture reached its expiration date? Is A HARD DAY’S NIGHT peak Beatles? Our longest episode to date because the Martinez family loves to not only agree to disagree, but to somehow disagree about the things they do agree on as well.

    Ep 14 - Clerks Jan 17, 2021
    Show notes

I assure you we’re podcasting this week about Kevin Smith’s 1994 classic, CLERKS. Raphael takes off his nostalgia tinted glasses & realizes that maybe the film in 2020 isn’t the same as it was in ‘94. Raquel sees the a comedic throughline to Sid Caesar and Red Skelton, but also feels confused & on the outside of Star Wars philosophizing – not to mention finds the film maybe a little too pretentious. Which characters are chaotic neutral or chaotic good? Who is a more well rounded character, Veronica or Caitlin? What does a 68 year old mom feel about being introduced to Jay & Silent Bob for the first time? What does her millennial son have to say about San Diego Comic-Con, The Big Bang Theory, Marvel Films, & all the nerdery he’s had pent up for the past couple of decades?

    Ep 13 - Born Yesterday Jan 10, 2021
    Show notes

This week Raquel and Raphael tackle “Mr. Pygmalion Goes To Washington,” better known as George Cukor’s 1950 comedy masterpiece, Born Yesterday. This is one of Raquel’s favorite movies, and to her surprise, one of Raphael’s as well. Why does Raquel love “broads” like Billie Dawn? Which of the Bush children did Raphael do an Easter egg roll with at the White House? Is William Holden’s character just another paternalistic man interfering in a woman’s life? All these questions answered, and less, in this black and white episode of The Generation Splice. (Also, apologies for the technical issues with the sound. We know it sounds pretty off. We didn’t notice them until after recording and did our very best to fix them. Please believe us! Thanks.)

    Ep 12 - The Hudsucker Proxy Jan 03, 2021
    Show notes

Happy New Year! This week we talk about one of Raphael’s favorite holiday films. You know, for kids! 1994’s Coen Brothers and Sam Raimi teamup, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY. This throwback to the fast-talking, stylized films of the ‘30s and ‘40s have the Martinez’s divided. Raphael loves Jennifer Jason Leigh’s affected Mid-Atlantic accent, Raquel would rather be deaf. She would also rather watch any of the number of films that inspired HUDSUCKER, while Raphael appreciates it as a homage and his gateway to those films. Raquel also learns about the “magical negro” trope, and discusses the cultural/historical accuracy of the Moses character with Raphael. Raphael thinks this is a screwball noir, Raquel thinks Raphael is a screwball for thinking that because her Noir Sense wasn’t tingling. Raquel also waxes nostalgic about actually being there for the Hula Hoop craze! And everyone loves Tim Robbins! Lots of stuff covered, but this is still a short one, because time is money!

    Ep 11 - Love Actually Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

Happy Holidays! This week Raphael and Raquel cover Raquel’s favorite Xmas movie, LOVE ACTUALLY. Is this is the wonderfully funny and happy film that Raquel loves? Or is this the creeptastic male gaze extravaganza that Raphael believes it to be? Is it cool to arrange a spontaneous Beatles singalong? Is this a fun interweaving of Xmas tales, or just a meandering mish mosh of too many cooks? Are romcoms dangerous to our psyche or just escapist fantasy? Is love like trench warfare? Listen and judge for yourself!

    Ep 10 - They Live Dec 20, 2020
    Show notes

It's the holiday season! Consume! Buy! Obey! This week Raquel & Raphael honor apathy by talking about John Carpenter’s 1988 cult classic, THEY LIVE. Why is Raquel disappointed in John? Why does she feel personally insulted by the film? Where does Raphael stand on the Shepard Fairey vs Banksy street art debate? Can political movies also be purposefully dumb & still be politically effective? What genre does Carpenter himself believe THEY LIVE to be? The age old fight of low-brow vs high-brow art continues!

    Ep 9 - Parasite Dec 13, 2020
    Show notes

This week Raquel and Raphael pick apart Bong Joon Ho’s 2020 instant masterpiece, PARASITE. Raquel is entranced and fascinated by the visuals of the film, while Raphael won’t shut up about late stage capitalism and it’s discontents. Listen to the two of them argue something well outside of both their knowledge: how Miranda rights work in South Korea. This is one of the longest, and most heated discussions in the history of The Generation Splice. Listen to a mom and her son manage to find a way to argue about a film they both really enjoyed.

Ep 8 - Night of the Hunter Dec 06, 2020
    Show notes

The battle between love and hate plays out when Raquel and Raphael talk about 1955's southern Gothic classic, NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. Raquel loves the moral play of the character's and their religious battles. Raphael spiels about the unquestionable influence of the film, including on himself. A creepy Christmas classic to start the holiday season right!

    Ep 7 - Uncut Gems Nov 29, 2020
    Show notes

This week's film is the Safdie brothers 2019 instant masterpiece, UNCUT GEMS. Raquel is overwhelmed! Raphael revels in the chaos! How much Sandler inflicted stress can Raquel take? Is Raphael only going to make it worse? Listen to very diplomatic way Raquel talks about a movie that obviously bothers her a whole lot to someone that is only making things worse!
