Smarter NOT Harder: The Secret to Weight Loss - w/ Dave Asprey | The Empowering Neurologist EP 157 Feb 06, 2023
    Show notes

Maybe we have it all wrong. Maybe we are overdoing it, especially as it relates to things like exercise. Should we tap into the “power of laziness?”

In Dave Asprey's new book, SMARTER NOT HARDER: The Biohacker's Guide to Getting the Body and Mind you Want, Asprey makes a compelling point that indeed less may be more. He describes how we live in a time where we finally have such a level of understanding of human physiology that we are indeed able to hack into ancient pathways to bring about health and vitality by implementing knowledge based interventions.

The approaches he describes go well beyond simply engaging in very short burst of high intensity activity, but also include important nutritional recommendations, and even ways hack the brain using exciting new technologies.

As always, I do enjoy my time with Dave Asprey. The conclusions he reaches are always based upon a deep level of exploration and always seem valuable.

Preventing Obesity: The Myth of Calorie Counting - with Dr. Fung | The Empowering Neurologist EP.156 Jan 16, 2023
    Show notes

What should we eat? I ask this question in the context of the incredible rates of obesity that we are now seeing, virtually worldwide. Today we will spend time with Dr. Jason Fung author of the book The Obesity Code. This is a landmark book that powerfully lays out why we are continuing to gain weight. It dispels the notion that dietary fat threatens to make us gain weight as well as the unfounded idea of calories in versus calories out as an explanation for why we gain weight.

Dr. Fung clearly focuses on the importance of the hormone, insulin, in terms of obesity, and certainly in terms of diabetes as well. He outlines a very straightforward plan that is in perfect alignment with current science. This interview is one of the most fundamental as a relates to the science of weight loss and regaining control over our blood sugar.

Melatonin - Why All the Interest? - with Dr. Deanna Minich | The Empowering Neurologist EP 155 Nov 21, 2022
    Show notes

Melatonin has taken center-stage in terms of interest from both the scientific community as well as the general population. And there are really good reasons for all this attention. Recently, with the Covid pandemic, melatonin has been looked upon as a way of "boosting the immune system." We've looked at melatonin for many years as a sleep aid and as a way of dealing with jet lag. We know that melatonin has antioxidant properties and even anti-inflammatory activity as well.

But, all of these ideas and information are ultimately confusing, to say the least. That's why today we're spending time with my good for friend, Dr. Deanna Minich, who has recently authored a terrific paper on this fascinating but confusing subject.. We talk about this paper, why she became interested in this fascinating molecule found in animals as well as plants,, and most importantly, what we can all do to benefit from this exciting new research on our Empowering Neurologist interview.

UNfollow your Passion to Find Fulfillment - with Terri Trespicio | EP 154 Jul 04, 2022
    Show notes

We are so often told that one of our fundamental goals in life is to find our “passion” and follow it. If we can identify this goal, we are led to believe, then everything will magically fall into place.

According to Terri Trespicio, our guest on the podcast today, if we are busy looking for our passion we might well miss out on opportunities that may come our way. These opportunities may be related to our work or even our relationships. Terri makes it clear that it’s “OK not to know” as it relates to finding our passion, and that surpasses, if we are available for them, can be very fulfilling.

Many people seem to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out “what they are supposed to do.” But as Terri, quoting her mother counters, “You create life by living it.”

Reading Terri’s new book, UNfollow Your Passion, might well lead the reader to recognize that he or she is letting someone else set the rules for what is their life. And the book helps us understand both how this happens, and importantly, what we can do to put ourselves back in the driver’s seat.

Profound New Research on Improving MS with Diet - with Dr. Terry Wahls | EP 149 Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Multiple sclerosis (MS), is an auto-immune condition affecting more than 1 million Americans. And like other autoimmune conditions, it it's becoming more prevalent. The role of genetics in MS is not significant. Lifestyle choices however may play important roles in regulating the immune system, and therefore should certainly be looked at as it relates to this and other autoimmune conditions.

My guest today, Dr. Terry Wahls, is herself a multiple sclerosis patient. On the podcast she describes how aggressive her multiple sclerosis became, how she herself did not seem to realize any dramatic improvement from pharmaceutical intervention, and how she ultimately discovered the important role of nutrition in terms of regulating her immune system and as such, the disease course of her multiple sclerosis situation.

Dr. Wahls then took these observations and created programs for other MS patients, applying rigorous scientific principles to study the effects of nutritional interventions.

Her latest study compares her nutritional protocol with a long-standing nutritional approach to multiple sclerosis called the Swank diet that actually began being utilized in the late 1940s. I will say that the results she has obtained, which we discussed today, are extremely impressive.

There is certainly good reason to consider the use of pharmaceutical intervention in multiple sclerosis. Nonetheless, that's one intervention that, in my opinion, should certainly be coupled with other proven therapies, like nutrition. Dr. Wahls makes it very clear that there are multiple mechanisms by which this dietary change may prove helpful in the MS patient; by targeting things like inflammation, the functionality of the gut bacteria, and even the function of mitochondria.

I am certain you will enjoy today's interview. I do want to indicate that you can learn more about Dr. Wahls by reading her book, The Wahls Protocol.

How to Enter Ketosis without Restrictive Diets - with Dr. Steven Gundry | EP 148 Apr 11, 2022
    Show notes

We are hearing so much these days about the benefit of a ketogenic diet. But while there may be benefits, it's not necessarily the easiest diet for everyone to engage. Further, staying in ketosis for an extended period of time may actually be associated with some fairly significant threats to our health.

Today I'm speaking with Dr. Steven Gundry about his new book, Unlocking the Keto Code. I have to admit that at first, I thought this was going to be another way of engaging the ketogenic diet. But I soon learned that what this book is actually focused on is first, unraveling why a ketogenic diet is beneficial, and secondly, after the reader understands the importance of the mechanisms underlying the ketogenic diet, it provides them the tools for bringing these mechanisms online without specifically going into ketosis.

That certainly sounds like a home run. The book focuses on the notion of "uncoupling mitochondria." This basically means that fuel is wasted as opposed to being utilized. It's a way of actually reducing the efficiency of mitochondrial function to bring about positive health benefits. I know this sounds challenging, and I agree that it is. Nonetheless, Dr. Gundry has done an exceptional job in terms of making this information clear and understandable.

This is a wonderful new book and I believe it's certainly going to dramatically change the playing field moving forward as it brings to our attention not just the benefits of the ketogenic diet, but the value of things like cold exposure, heat exposure, consuming polyphenols, and a variety of other health supportive modalities
