Got Truth? Rethinking Dairy, Calcium, and Bone Health Nov 03, 2025
    Show notes

Milk has long been sold as the key to strong bones, but research challenges that claim: many people don’t tolerate dairy, calcium needs are lower than advertised, and higher milk intake doesn’t necessarily prevent fractures. Politics and industry marketing helped set “three glasses a day,” even though healthy bones depend more on overall diet and lifestyle—things like vitamin D, movement, and avoiding soda, excess sugar, and stress that drive calcium loss. Dairy may be helpful for some diets, but it can also trigger bloating, acne, congestion, or digestive issues. The good news is that strong bones and good nutrition are still very doable without cow’s milk—think leafy greens, sardines, almonds, chia, and sunshine for vitamin D.

In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. David Ludwig and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why bone health depends more on diet, lifestyle, and nutrient balance than on dairy.

David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD, is an endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and Professor of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He co-directs the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center and founded the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) program, one of the nation’s largest clinics for children with obesity. For over 25 years, Dr. Ludwig has studied how diet composition affects metabolism, body weight, and chronic disease risk, focusing on low glycemic index, low-carbohydrate, and ketogenic diets. Called an “obesity warrior” by Time Magazine, he has championed policy changes to improve the food environment. A Principal Investigator on numerous NIH and philanthropic grants, Dr. Ludwig has published over 200 scientific articles and three books for the public, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Always, Hungry?

Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. Former White House Chef Sam Kass: How to Overcome the Coming Food Crisis Oct 29, 2025
    Show notes

Our food system is reaching a breaking point—and the warning signs are already on our plates. From disappearing crops to rising health costs, it’s clear that the way we grow and eat food can’t continue as it has. Today on The Dr. Hyman Show, I sit down with Sam Kass, former White House chef and senior policy advisor, to explore his new book The Last Supper: The Politics of the End of Food. We talk about what’s driving the crisis, what’s already being done to repair it, and how each of us can help build a food system that supports both people and the planet. Join us for the full conversation on YouTube, or listen wherever you get your podcasts. We discuss: • What if the foods you eat every day are quietly shaping both your health and the planet’s? • Learn how a healthier food system could mean cleaner air, better soil, and stronger communities. • See why so many farmers want to do better—and what keeps them stuck. • How everyday food choices shape the culture that businesses and policymakers follow. • Simple actions you can take now to help build a food system that serves all of us. If this really is our “last supper” with the food system as we know it, we have the power to decide what comes next. Let’s make it a meal that feeds both people and the planet. The Mouth-Body Connection: How Oral Health Shapes Whole-Body Healing Oct 27, 2025
    Show notes

Most people don’t realize that what happens in the mouth can ripple through the whole body. The balance of the oral microbiome—the community of bacteria living in our mouths—can either protect us or trigger widespread inflammation that affects the heart, joints, and brain. Hidden dental infections or mercury fillings can quietly drive fatigue, autoimmune issues, or dementia—and fixing the mouth often helps the rest of the body heal, too. The good news is that with simple steps like eating whole foods (often removing gluten), cleaning the mouth well, and breathing through the nose, we can protect both our smile and our overall health. When we care for the mouth as part of the body, lasting wellness becomes possible from the inside out.

In this episode, Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Elizabeth Boham, James Nestor, and I talk about how a healthy mouth microbiome is a key to whole-body wellness.

Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.

She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine.

James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, and more. His book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, was an instant New York Times and London Sunday Times bestseller. Breath explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly—and how to get it back. Breath spent 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in the first year of release, and will be translated into more than 30 languages. Breath was awarded the Best General Nonfiction Book of 2020 by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and was nominated for Best Science Book of 2021 by the Royal Society. Nestor has spoken at Stanford Medical School, Yale School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, The United Nations, Global Classroom, and appeared on more than 60 radio and television shows, including Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Joe Rogan Show, and more. He lives and breathes in San Francisco.

Inflammation: The Hidden Fire Behind Pain, Aging, and Disease Oct 20, 2025
    Show notes

A hidden fire called chronic inflammation drives many problems—from joint pain and arthritis to autoimmune conditions, and even faster aging. Typical fixes (like pain meds and steroid shots) calm symptoms but often miss the “why,” and can leave people still hurting or even create more issues. Big triggers of inflammation that impact our joints, and so much more, include sugar and refined carbs, extra weight, leaky gut, toxins, infections, stress, and poor sleep—plus joints naturally get less blood and oxygen as we age. This is why it’s important to create an anti-inflammatory lifestyle plan starting with real whole foods, and incorporating regular exercise, stress management, gut repair, and targeted anti-inflammatory supplements.

In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. Cindy Geyer, how chronic inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain can be reduced using a Functional Medicine approach, including how to do the anti-inflammatory 10-Day Detox diet.

Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center.

Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine.

Regenerative Meat Could Save Your Health (and the Planet) | Autumn Smith Oct 15, 2025
    Show notes

Food is medicine isn’t a slogan—it’s how our bodies are designed to heal. My guest today, Autumn Smith, knows that better than anyone. After overcoming years of digestive and mental health struggles, she co-founded Paleo Valley and Wild Pastures to help others access truly nutrient-dense food. On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, we explore how regenerative farming restores both soil and human health, why food quality matters as much as food choice, and how regeneratively raised animal foods can contain the same healing compounds we find in plants. Watch the full conversation on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts. You’ll learn: • How to tell if your meat is truly regenerative • What labels like grass-fed, grass-finished, and regenerative really mean • Why soil health directly impacts your nutrient intake • Easy ways to lower inflammation through better fats • Affordable steps to eat well and support the planet When we heal the soil, we heal ourselves—and that change starts with what’s on your plate

Land, Power, and the Plate: Ending Food Apartheid with Regenerative Justice Oct 13, 2025
    Show notes

Many communities face an uneven food landscape: plenty of cheap junk food, but few places to buy fresh, healthy food. This pattern—often called “food apartheid”—doesn’t happen by accident; it grows from redlining, unfair rules, and corporate control. The impacts are steep: higher rates of type 2 diabetes, kidney failure, and learning problems in Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities, along with unsafe conditions for farmworkers. These harms have a long history, and government subsidies and convincing marketing keep ultraprocessed foods on top. However, we take practical steps to make change including investing in regenerative and community farms, protecting and fairly paying farmworkers, and enforcing civil-rights laws so public dollars support real food, healthy soil, and communities that thrive.

In this episode, Leah Penniman, Dr. Rupa Marya, Raj Patel, Karen Washington, and I discuss why food injustices exist and how we can create regenerative food systems to serve everyone.

Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer/peyizan, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land. As co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs - including farmer training for Black & Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Leah has been farming since 1996, holds an MA in Education and a BA in Environmental Science from Clark University, and is a Manye (Queen Mother) in Vodun.

Dr. Rupa Marya is a physician, activist, mother, and composer. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco where she practices and teaches Internal Medicine. Her research examines the health impacts of social systems, from agriculture to policing. She is a co-founder of the Do No Harm Coalition, a collective of health workers committed to addressing disease through structural change. At the invitation of Lakota health leaders, she is currently helping to set up the Mni Wiconi Health Clinic and Farm at Standing Rock in order to decolonize medicine and food.

Raj Patel is a Research Professor at the University of Texas at Austin’s Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs, a professor in the University’s department of nutrition, and a Research Associate at Rhodes University, South Africa. He is the author of Stuffed and Starved, the New York Times bestselling The Value of Nothing, co-author of A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things. A James Beard Leadership Award winner, he is the co-director of the award-winning documentary about climate change and the food system, The Ants & The Grasshopper.

Karen is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC.

    Brain-First or Gut-First? Rethinking Parkinson’s Disease w/ Drs. Ray Dorsey & Michael Okun Oct 08, 2025
    Show notes

Today we tackle Parkinson’s as a preventable epidemic—not an inevitable fate. I’m joined on The Dr. Hyman Show by two of the field’s top neurologists, Drs. Ray Dorsey and Michael Okun, co-authors of The Parkinson’s Plan, to unpack why cases are exploding and what we can do about it right now. We look at how toxins drive disease, why Parkinson’s goes far beyond dopamine, and the early signs most people miss—plus what you can do today to protect your brain. And we connect the dots between environmental exposures—whether from food, water, or even recreational spaces—and the growing burden of neurological disease. Watch the full conversation here or listen wherever you get your podcasts. [YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL] We also explore: • How to spot early signs—like loss of smell—long before a diagnosis • Everyday ways to cut toxin exposures in your food, water, and home • Why Parkinson’s is a whole-body disease, and what that means for prevention • The kind of exercise that protects your brain and slows progression • Simple nutrient checks that can support medication and brain health Parkinson’s isn’t inevitable. Protecting brain health starts with small daily choices. These are steps you can take right now for yourself and your loved ones. With awareness and action, you can build resilience today and help shape a healthier future. View Show Notes From This Episode

Foods and Habits That Keep Your Immune System Resilient Oct 06, 2025
    Show notes

Our immune systems are under more pressure than ever—from processed diets, environmental toxins, stress, and fast-spreading infections—and the result is faster aging and greater vulnerability to disease. As we grow older, “zombie cells” spread inflammation throughout the body, weakening defenses and accelerating decline. But research shows we’re not powerless: the emerging science of immuno-rejuvenation reveals that we can retrain and rebuild our immunity. Through the right foods, lifestyle habits, and even strategic stressors, the body has hidden pathways for repair and renewal—offering clues to how we might slow aging and unlock greater resilience.

In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Roger Seheult, how we can support the immune system by using food, lifestyle, and hormetic stress to reduce illness and restore resilience while slowing aging.

She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Dr. Roger Seheult is currently an Associate Clinical Professorat the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine and Allied Health at Loma Linda University. Dr. Seheult is quadruple board-certifiedin Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. His current practice is in Banning, California where he is a critical care physician, pulmonologist, and sleep physician at Beaver Medical Group. He was formerly the Director for Intensive Care Services at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital. He lectures routinely across the country at conferences and for medical, PA, and RT societies. Dr. Seheult is also the Co-founder of MedCram, an online medical education company that helps healthcare professionals and also lay people understand medical topics clearly.
