President-Elect Joe Biden Prepares for Transition as Donald Trump Continues to Dispute Election Nov 09, 2020
    Show notes

Joe Biden is now President-Elect of the United States with over 75 million people voting for the Biden/Harris ticket. President Trump has refused to concede while his campaign files lawsuits in multiple states alleging fraud and that the election was stolen. As Biden begins the transition to taking over, there is much on his plate... getting a handle on the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, and most importantly, trying to unite a deeply divided country. Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News, joins us for more.

Next, possibly the biggest winner in this election was cannabis and magic mushrooms. Measures to legalize cannabis had major victories in various states. Oregon became the first state to make possession of small amounts of harder drugs like cocaine, heroin and other drugs not punishable by jail time. Oregon and Washington D.C. also approved the therapeutic use of magic mushrooms. Alicia Victoria Lozano, digital reporter at NBC News, joins us for how drugs were a big winner this election.

Finally, as the weather turns colder, restaurants have had to adapt once again to be able to serve customers and keep the coronavirus from spreading. Enter... Bubble dining. Restaurants are setting up clear plastic domes and pods with tables set inside to keep customers safe and warm, but are they safe? Ventilation and cleanliness must still be maintained inside. Allyson Chiu, wellness reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for the new dining pods.

Government Gridlock Looms Over Economy After Election Nov 06, 2020
    Show notes

Beyond the election, the economy may still be caught up in gridlock as it seems likely that Democrats will control the House and Republicans will control the Senate. Republicans have already signaled that if Joe Biden wins the presidency, they will prevent any major spending bill even as the economy continues to suffer through the pandemic. Felix Salmon, chief financial correspondent at Axios, joins us for the upcoming gridlock.

Next, coming in to the election, it seemed that Democrats had a good chance at flipping the Senate. Well, the polls were wrong and it looks like that chance has nearly faded. We are looking at two possible Senate runoff races in Georgia for Democrats to make gains, but it could be difficult. Siobhan Hughes, Capitol Hill reporter at the WSJ, joins us for more.

Finally, doctors are beginning to figure out why some people have long-term symptoms from COVID-19. Called “post-acute Covid” or “chronic Covid” many are continuing to deal with symptoms for weeks or months after they were expected to recover. These symptoms range from severe fatigue and brain fog to digestive problems and erratic heart rates. Sumathi Reddy, WSJ’s “Your Health” columnist, joins us for what could be causing these long-term effects.

Biggest Loser of the 2020 Election: The Polls Nov 05, 2020
    Show notes

Possibly the biggest loser in this election, the polls. Once again many pollsters and poll analysts got it wrong. Coming into Election Day, it looked like a Biden landslide and a democratic flip of the senate, but that didn’t happen. Going forward these polls will need to be re-evaluated and regain the trust of the people. David Graham, staff writer at The Atlantic, joins us for why a failure of the polls threatens our ability to understand what others think outside of these elections.

Next, President Trump is mounting several legal challenges in different states. The campaign is calling for a recount in Wisconsin, and suing to halt mail-in vote counting in Michigan and Pennsylvania. They are alleging that Trump representatives are not being given enough access to the counting of ballots. Shan Li, reporter at the WSJ, joins us for these voting legal fights.

Finally, an update to an important ballot proposition that we were following out of California. The voters there decided to approve Prop 22 which would allow Uber, Lyft, and other gig economy companies to classify workers as independent contractors instead of employees. Taryn Luna, reporter at the LA Times, joins us for more on the most expensive ballot prop in history.

How the Media Will Change After the Election Nov 04, 2020
    Show notes

The election this year is will also mark the end of an era for the media and things will change no matter what. The media has revolved around the president for the last 4 years and the pandemic has advanced the new landscape digitally by years. There will be a wave of retirements in places like the LA Times, Washington Post, and even the NY Times. Battles over free speech and censorship will also continue when it comes to big social media platforms. Ben Smith, media columnist at the NY Times, joins us for how the media will be changing after the election.

Next, examining the mortality rate in more than 500 U.S. jails, Reuters found that in about two thirds of cases, inmates died while in lockup before they had a chance to be convicted in court. Most of these inmates died while waiting for quality healthcare. These jails are run by county sheriffs or local police and have little federal oversight and a rising share of them have contracted out their healthcare to private companies. Peter Eisler, national affairs correspondent at Reuters, joins us more.

One Number to Watch as We Wait for Election Results... Number of Votes Not Yet Counted Nov 03, 2020
    Show notes

Election Day is here and we are all eager for the polls to close and get quick results for the big question… who wins the presidency? But this year there is a record number of people voting early by mail, and counting all those could take some time. One of the most crucial numbers to follow might be votes not yet counted. Mark Niquette, politics reporter at Bloomberg News, joins us for a new statistic that the AP is using to see how far off we are from a result.

Next, President Trumps has called on his supporters to watch out for fraud and volunteer to become poll watchers. So far in early voting, that army of watchers didn’t really materialized, in part, because poll watching seems to be an extremely boring job. Still, as some are concerned about voter intimidation, it is something to watch out for as the day develops. Jessica Huseman, lead reporter for ProPublica’s Electionland project, joins us for more.

Finally, as the pandemic began and lockdowns were in place, there were tons of stories of pets being adopted and a boon for the pet-care industry. Now, as the pandemic wears on and we see job losses and reduced wages, we are seeing a growing number of people having to surrender their pets to shelters or sanctuaries. Brent Schrotenboer, reporter at USA Today, tells how it’s getting tougher for some to care for their pets.

Final Push for Candidates Before Election Day Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Final push before Election Day and President Trump is still looking to big rallies to turn out his base, while Joe Biden leads in national polls. Over 93 million people have already voted early and the focus is going to be on the states' ability to count millions of mail-in ballots in quick enough fashion to get a result. Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News, joins us for what to look out for as election night approaches.

Next, still getting tons of emails and texts with calls to vote from people and organizations you don't know anything about? There is a whole voter data economy, where candidates, parties, and nonprofits collect, buy. and use a ton of information to target you. In some cases they have over 3,000 data points such as income, debt, family, ethnicity and so much more that is used to send you online ads, mailers, and those pesky texts. Geoffrey Fowler, tech columnist at the Washington Post, tells us how they get all your information.

Finally, one of the numbers that public health experts have not been able to get a handle on, is exactly how many people have recovered from COVID-19. There is no agreed upon standard definition for a coronavirus recovery, so each state counts it a different way and some don't even track the number at all. Sarah Toy, health and science reporter at the WSJ, joins us for joins us for how many people we think have recovered and why experts think that number is way off.
