Black Friday Is Different This Year, Here Are Some Apps to Help You Get the Best Deals Nov 27, 2020
    Show notes

Black Friday is here and it’s all about getting those deals! Most people will be doing their shopping online, so you better get that refresh finger ready. Some of the hot items people are trying to track down are the new PS5 and Xbox consoles, but good luck with that. Marc Saltzman, tech columnist and host of the “Tech It Out” podcast, joins us for this and some apps that could help you get the best deal in town.

Next, looking forward to Christmas and trying to get in some of those traditional experiences, how will your visit to Santa be different during the pandemic? Some retailers are cancelling Santa visits and opting for a virtual meet-up. Others are doing in-person visits where Santa could be protected inside a giant snow globe or barricaded behind an 8-ft picture frame. Abha Bhattarai, national retail reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for how your Santa visit won’t be the same.

Finally, it has been referred to by some as the zombie deer disease. Chronic Wasting Disease affects the brains of deer, elk, and similar animals leaving them listless, drooling, and eventually dead. But a study is underway now in Yellowstone National Park that is exploring the idea of using wolves as the first line of defense against this disease. Jim Robbins, science writer at the NY Times, joins us for how the predator cleansing effect could help fight this terrible disease.

Thanksgiving Food Power Rankings and Losing Your Sense of Smell to COVID Nov 26, 2020
    Show notes

Thanksgiving is here and even amid the pandemic many will be gathering with family, please be safe and wear your mask when you can, but let’s talk about food. To start us off today we will give you the official Thanksgiving food power rankings. We will speak to Lucas Kwan Peterson, food columnist at the LA Times for his take on where all your favorite Thanksgiving foods rank. A little preview of what you are in for… Turkey ranks dead last in his list, pumpkin pie doesn’t fare much better, and cranberries might just be the most controversial food item.

Next, one of the most interesting symptoms of COVID-19 is when people lose their sense of smell and taste. As many as 80% of people experience a temporary loss of smell and while most recover in about two weeks, for some, it can last much longer and even distort some of the smells of very familiar things. French fries might smell like rotting meat, coffee could smell like burning rubber. This condition is known as parosmia. Scientists are studying why this happens and are getting clues to how recovery might work. Robbie Whelan, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for more.

President-Elect Joe Biden Picks His National Security Team Nov 25, 2020
    Show notes

President-elect Joe Biden has announced his nominees for his top national security team. Some of the names include Tony Blinken for Secretary of State, Alejandro Mayorkas for DHS Secretary, Avril Haines for Director of National Intelligence, and John Kerry as climate envoy. Carol Morello, diplomatic correspondent at the Washington Post, joins us for more on who they are and how these picks have often pushed for policies that Trump used to fuel his rise.

Next, China has successfully launched its most ambitious mission to the Moon yet. It is a quick ‘grab and go’ mission to bring back some lunar rocks and dirt. If they succeed it will be the first time since 1976 that we will have fresh moon rocks back here on earth. It is a complicated process for the mission and they hope to be back in about 23 days. Loren Grush, senior science writer at The Verge, joins us for more on the Chinese Moon mission.

Finally, retailers are preparing for another surge of shoppers as we are seeing rising coronavirus cases and in some areas, new rounds of lockdowns. All the while, essential workers continue to go in to work and put their health at risk. Hazard pay incentives that we saw at the beginning of the pandemic have not come back and some companies don’t plan on bringing it back. Michael Corkery, business reporter at the NY Times, joins us for more on the lack of coronavirus hazard pay.

AstraZeneca Vaccine Is 70% Effective on Average, up to 90% Depending on Dosage Nov 24, 2020
    Show notes

Once again, more good news on the vaccine front. AstraZeneca and Oxford University has released some early data saying their vaccine candidate on average is 70% effective against coronavirus. In some cases depending on the dosing, it can be up to 90% effective. This vaccine candidate is also cheaper to make and can be stored at normal refrigeration temperatures. Adam Feuerstein, reporter at STAT News, joins us for the latest vaccine results.

Next, some doctors and nurses are calling it quits over the pandemic. Medical professionals are closing their practices or retiring early because of financial stress and also the mental exhaustion of trying to stay safe while coronavirus continues to spread unchecked in the country. This trend could have an adverse effect for patients who could see a reduction in patients’ access to medical care. Reed Abelson, health reporter at the NY Times, joins us for why some doctors are closing shop.

Finally, President Trump’s legal team has been a mess in fighting the outcome of the election with no real evidence of widespread fraud. The legal team even took to the steps to oust Sidney Powell, one of the lawyers who had appeared with Rudy Giuliani and pushed some of the most outlandish conspiracy theories about the elections including that some Republican governors were part of the plot. Philip Bump, national correspondent at the Washington Post, joins us for why they gave Powell the boot.

Trump's Legal Team Continues to Lose in Court, Joe Biden to Announce Some Cabinet Picks This Week Nov 23, 2020
    Show notes

Another week has gone by and President Trump continues to fight the outcome of the election despite loss after loss in court. Even though his campaign doesn't have any solid evidence of fraud, he's continuing to claim the election was stolen, he's fighting with Republican governors, and he's thinking of what he is going to do post-presidency. Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden will be making some cabinet picks this week. Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News, joins us for more.

Next, it looks like people are rushing the toilet paper aisle again. We are seeing cases of coronavirus rise and with it, new lockdowns in certain states. The next logical thing to do is stock up on toilet paper obviously, and while we are seeing some empty shelves already, supply chain experts say that it won't be the same this time. Mark Hay, contributor to the Daily Beast, joins us for how stores are better prepared for toilet paper panic buying.

Finally, for all those parents with kids doing remote learning this year, pay attention to your children's grades. In some cases, the auto-grading software used to grade quizzes and schoolwork are getting it wrong. If a student's answers don't match exactly what's in the teacher's answer guide, it can be marked wrong, even if it's just a capitalization discrepancy. Julie Jargon, family and tech columnist at the WSJ, joins us for how these auto-grading systems are causing some headaches.

Hundreds of Companies Given PPP Loans Have Failed and Parler- The Free Speech Social Network Nov 20, 2020
    Show notes

An unfortunate update on many of the small businesses that received Paycheck Protection Program loans… about 300 of them have had to file for bankruptcy. The stimulus funds were not enough to keep these businesses open as the pandemic continues to hamper economic activity and a lack of additional help from Congress. In filings, the pandemic was the primary reason for declaring bankruptcy. Shane Shifflet, data reporter at the WSJ, joins us for how tough it is for these businesses and why the number of failed companies who received PPP loans is likely higher.

Next, we’ll tell you about Parler. It has been billed as the “Free Speech Social Network.” It has been the top app on both Google and Apple’s app store offering mostly conservatives a safe space without fear of being deplatformed for your views. In many cases, when posts or profiles get flagged on Twitter or Facebook, they often end up on Parler with new life. It is small operation for now, but more people are joining including high profile conservative voices. Arielle Pardes, senior writer at Wired, joined the social network and tells us what her free speech experience was like.
