Off to the Races! Joe Biden is All In for 2020 Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

Well it’s finally official, former Vice President Joe Biden has jumped in the race for president in 2020. He announced his bid by video and positioned his run as a battle for the soul of the nation, saying we cannot let Donald Trump alter the character of the nation. Zach Montellaro, campaign reporter for Politico, joins us for what to watch out for as Joe Biden joins an already crowded field of contenders.

Next, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un just held his first summit with the Russian president and Putin confirmed that North Korea is willing to give up their nuclear weapons, but only if they get ironclad security guarantees. We are also hearing that as we were trying to get a comatose Otto Warmbier back after being held by North Korean for 17 months, they issued a $2 million bill for his hospital care before he could be released. Dave Lawler, Axios world editor, joins us for the latest.

Finally, you only have a year and a half left. Airports and the TSA are gearing up for the Real ID deadline and you should be too. You won’t be able to fly domestically after October 1, 2020 unless you have a Real ID compliant license, or you want to carry around your passport. Harriet Baskas, contributor to USA Today, joins us for why you should get your Real ID sooner rather than later.

Twitter is Not America Apr 25, 2019
    Show notes

Twitter has become a public square where anyone can share ideas, discuss, debate, or even troll others. We often see media reports point to activity on Twitter as a representative example of how the country feels on any given subject, but how do Twitter users compare to the US population. My producer Miranda joins us to discuss new findings from the Pew Research Center. Bottom line: Twitter is not America.

Next, as more media companies are gearing up to launch their own streaming platforms, Netflix might have to think about life without some of its top shows. For example, the top Netflix show by minutes watched is “The Office,” but discussions are already happening at NBCUniversal to pull the show and bring it to their streaming service. Joe Flint, reporter at the WSJ, joins us to discuss what could be a recurring headache for Netflix and its subscribers.

Finally, some international additions are coming to a McDonald’s near you! Starting in June, McDonald’s will be introducing new menu items from other countries. You can try the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger from Spain or the Stroopwafel McFlurry from the Netherlands. Kate Taylor, reporter from Business Insider, joins us for the new additions.

    Show notes

After tragedy struck in Sri Lanka where three churches and four hotels were hit by suicide bombers on Easter Sunday, the Islamic State is now claiming responsibility and officials say it might have been retaliation for last month’s mosque attacks in New Zealand. There are also reports that Sri Lanka had been warned ahead of time about an impending attack, but did not act on the intelligence. Dave Lawler, Axios world editor, joins us for what we know so far.

Next, the business of donating human eggs can be very lucrative, with some agencies paying as much as $50,000 per cycle in some cases, but donors say it can be confusing to navigate the process and leaving some unaware of the risks. Often the marketing doesn’t match the experience. Paris Martineau, writer for Wired, joins us for a look into the egg donation industry.

Finally, health experts have said that sitting too much or living a sedentary lifestyle can be hazardous to your health. Researches wanted to quantify how much people are sitting and found that Americans are sitting more than ever and the habits are starting young. Brianna Abbot, health reporter for the WSJ, joins us for how teens have become more sedentary than adults and computers may be to blame.

How DO Those Migrant Caravans Get and Stay Organized? Apr 23, 2019
    Show notes

As the country continues to struggle with the an influx of migrant asylum seekers and the system remains overtaxed to handle them all, reports of caravans forming to make the trek to the US keep making news. But how do these caravans form? Migrants are using social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp chat groups to share information and organize. Stef Kight, immigration reporter for Axios, joins us for how social media fuels migrant caravans.

Next, Johnson and Johnson is facing thousands of lawsuits with some wins and some losses from people alleging that using their Baby Powder products containing talc, gave them cancer or mesothelioma. According to a report from Reuters, which reviewed internal documents from Johnson and Johnson, when an arm of the WHO began classifying cosmetic talc such as Baby Powder as “possibly carcinogenic” and talc suppliers started including that information on its shipments, Johnson and Johnson was still looking for ways to sell it and they looked at two key groups of longtime users: minority and overweight women. Chris Kirkham, reporter for Reuters, joins us for more on their investigation.

    It's Coming: Wal-Mart's Robot Army Apr 22, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s podcast is all about the ever changing workplace. First, get ready for Walmart’s robot army. Walmart is planning to deploy almost 4,000 bots to work in its stores to mop the aisles, scan shelves, and even unload trucks. Erica Pandey, future reporter for Axios, joins us to talk about more automation in the workplace which as Walmart puts it, allows employees to do more fulfilling customer service work.

Next, in the age of legal marijuana, many employers are dropping the zero tolerance rule when it comes to drug tests. In states like California where marijuana is legal, the economy is growing, and unemployment is low, companies are facing shortages of qualified workers. Margot Roosevelt, economy and labor reporter for the LA Times, joins us for why increasingly companies are not drug testing or ignoring some results.

Finally, it’s a conversation happening in HR departments across the country… How can employers be more sensitive when giving that notice of termination? What is the best day to fire someone? It used to be Friday, but now it’s more like Wednesday. Chip Cutter with the WSJ, joins us for that and what you should do when getting fired.

Mueller Mania - Full Report Analysis Apr 19, 2019
    Show notes

It’s finally here. The redacted version of the Mueller report has been released. It is broken up into two volumes and totals 448 pages. First, on the question as to whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia…the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign, but there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us to break it all down.

Next, we continue our conversation with Ginger to discuss the question of obstruction of justice. The report details 10 instances of possible obstruction where the president tried to seize control of the Russia probe and force the removal of Robert Mueller, but no determination was made leaving it open for Congress to decide. In many cases Trump was saved from more legal jeopardy, by his staffers who refused to comply with his requests.

Finally, the Mueller report provides us with some intimate scenes from inside the Trump White House. My producer Miranda joins us to talk about how the President felt when he first heard that Mueller was appointed Special Counsel, a tense meeting between the president and White House Counsel Don McGahn, how long the president held on to former AG Jeff Session’s resignation letter.

    Show notes

Sol Pais, the Florida student who was said to have an infatuation with the Columbine shootings, made her way to Colorado, bought a shotgun and ammunition, and was seen as a credible threat which prompted many school closures has been found dead. My producer Miranda joins us to discuss her story and what was in her social media that led authorities to think she could hurt herself and others.

Next, as the opioid crisis continues to grip the country, federal prosecutors have arrested 60 physicians and pharmacists across five states with illegally handing out opioid prescriptions. Some of the doctors accused were trading drugs for sex, giving prescriptions to Facebook friends, and even pulling teeth to justify pain pills. Terry DeMio, Pulitzer prize winning reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, joins us for this prescription crackdown.

Finally, researchers have found a way to restore some activity to pig brains after death. The findings could reshape the way we understand the limits of the brain and could open up new avenues for treating strokes and brain diseases. The experiments did not re-animate dead brains, but did prove cellular activity hours after the brains died. Daniela Hernandez, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for how the experiments worked.
