    Show notes

Soldiers in an intelligence unit with top-secret clearances were ordered by their commander to download an app they say could endanger them. The soldiers were concerned that the apps permissions allowed it to collect substantial amounts of personal data which caused concern that a hack could put individuals and missions at risk. Alex Horton, reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for more.

Next, a split Supreme Court looks like it could be ready to let President Trump end the DACA program. The two issues at hand are whether the courts have power to second guess Trump’s action and if the repeal itself was lawful. All eyes were on Chief Justice John Roberts as the potential swing vote, but the decision will not come until next spring. Bianca Quilantan, higher education reporter at Politico joins us for the fate of the Dreamers.

Finally, Disney+ launched Tuesday to some technical difficulties. Some were not able to access the service after paying for it, others could not access certain Star Wars titles, and others experienced long load times. But despite these initial hiccups, Disney+ has the potential to be a real contender with new programming and tons backlog titles from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and the Disney Vault. My producer Victor Wright, joins us for what to expect from the new streamer.

    Show notes

A “potential chemical of concern” has emerged from the outbreak of vaping related lung illnesses. The CDC has identified Vitamin E acetate as the potential culprit after finding it in the lung fluid of 29 samples from across 10 states. Vitamin E acetate can be grease-like or sticky and can cling to lung tissue. Emma Ockerman, reporter for Vice News, joins us for the latest.

Next, there is an anti-California sentiment growing in Boise, Idaho. Californians are leaving the state because of high taxes and housing affordability, and settling in places like Boise. But as Boise is experiencing a growth spurt, they are angry at Californians for pushing home prices higher, adding to traffic, and limiting opportunities for locals. Maria La Ganga, reporter for the LA Times, joins us for why there is so much hostility.

Finally, the struggle is real for some men to grow a beard. And in order for some guys to get that perfect look, they are faking it. Sometimes beards don’t grow in as fast as you might like, hair comes in patchy or in weird colors, so some guys are faking it with bread sprays, beard transplants, and even vitamin infused gummies that are supposed to promote hair growth. Ray Smith, style reporter for the WSJ, joins us for more.

Public Impeachment Hearings and Why You Shouldn't Always Trust the Breathalyzer Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

The next phase in the impeachment inquiry starts this Wednesday as televised hearings will feature diplomats that have already testified behind closed doors. First up is the top diplomat in Ukraine, William Taylor. Taylor was upset that security aid to Ukraine was held up for political reasons. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for what to expect from the hearings, GOP defenses to Trump, and whether Michael Bloomberg will run for president.

Next, a million Americans are arrested every year for drunken driving, and in many cases, the breathalyzer test is what seals the deal. But a recent NY Times investigation has found that these devices can give skewed results because of human error or because the devices haven’t been properly calibrated. There have been so many errors that judges in Massachusetts and New Jersey have thrown out more than 30,000 breath tests in the past 12 months alone. Stacy Cowley, reporter for the NY Times, joins us for why we can’t always trust the breathalyzer test.

Thanks in part to big tech companies, San Francisco is now home to more dogs than children. The city’s demographic is skewing younger and richer, people are staying single for longer, having fewer children, and getting more dogs. Search for Dark Matter May Depend on Ancient Shipwrecks and Trans Athletes in Women's Sports Nov 05, 2019
    Show notes

As scientists continue to look for the ever elusive dark matter, experiments designed to look for this currently undetected substance may depend on ancient shipwrecks. More specifically the lead that has been buried under water for hundreds of years. While other materials can be used in such experiments, this lead has low levels of radioactivity, which make it ideal for shielding dark matter detectors from rouge radiation. Robin George Andrews, contributor to the Atlantic, joins us for more.
