Ghost Gun Used in Saugus High School Shooting Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

Federal law enforcement officials are investigating whether the gun used in a school shooting at Saugus High School in California was a homemade, unserialized gun known as a “ghost gun.” The popularity of ghost guns has increased with advances in technology and make up a third of guns recovered by the ATF. Alain Stephens, western correspondent at The Trace, joins us for more on these ghost guns.

Next, the fifth round of Democratic debates took place on Wednesday in the shadow of the impeachment hearings. Niall Stanage, White House columnist at The Hill, helps break it down.

Teenagers Set up a Sex Sting and Catch a Local Alabama Teacher Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

Three teens in Alabama were tired of playing video games and decided to make a YouTube video. They wanted to make a “To Catch a Predator” style video so they set up some fake online dating profiles saying they were minors. All it took was two days and they made contact with a local teacher. The action was swift after they posted their video confronting him. Anna Claire Vollers, reporter for AL.com, joins us for Hive vs. Predator.

Next, we had critical testimony in the impeachment hearings. Ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, testified that there was indeed a quid pro quo in demanding that Ukraine investigate Burisma and the Bidens in exchange for military aid and a visit to the White House. Sondland also threw everyone under the bus saying that indicated that Mike Pompeo, Mike Pence, and Mick Mulvaney all knew what was going on. My producer Victor Wright, joins us for more.

Amazon employees are taking the 14 leadership principles they learn while on the job and are applying them to the startups and businesses they go on to run. Too Much Political News Is Causing Some to Tune Out Nov 20, 2019
    Show notes

Are you worn out with the amount of political news coming out daily? As the impeachment inquiry continues in Washington, many Americans are finding it difficult to keep up with the latest and what to believe, and it is causing them to tune out. Fake information is part of the problem, but so is the growing amount of opinion in news. Sabrina Tavernise, reporter for the NY Times, joins us for the fog of political news.

Next, while the fog of daily political news can get very thick, we did have a full day of impeachment hearings with more on the way. On Tuesday, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, Russia advisor to Mike Pence, Jennifer Williams, Ambassador Kurt Volker, and senior NSC official Tim Morrison all testified. Abbey Marshall, reporter at Politico, joins us to break down the testimony.

Finally, the last three weeks have not been kind to reboots at the box office. Doctor Sleep, Terminator: Dark Fate, and Charlie’s Angels were all flops. Part of the problem of why these reboots are not getting any traction is that many of these appeal to nostalgia for projects that came out about 20 years ago and younger moviegoers are not as familiar or attached to them as older audiences. Jeremy Fuster, reporter at The Wrap, joins us for more.

Finally, a little puppy named Narwhal captured the hearts of many people on the internet last week. Narwhal is special because he was born with two tails. And while that could be strange already, the second tail he was born with is coming out of his forehead! Claire Maldarelli, associate editor at Popular Science, joins us for the science behind Narwhal’s forehead tail.

Public Impeachment Hearings Take Center Stage in Washington Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

Washington is all about the impeachment hearings right now. There was a wild moment that played out last week as ousted ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified, she got to answer in real-time to Twitter attacks from the president. More testimony released from other officials also tie Trump to the delay in Ukraine finds. This week there will be eight people testifying across three days including Gordon Sondland, ambassador to the EU. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for a breakdown of testimony so far.

Next, there is a new vodka out on the market that aims to help stop climate change. It is made solely from carbon dioxide and water and the process used results in a carbon-negative vodka. Chemist Stafford Sheehan was working on a project to make renewable fuel from air. One of the fuels he made was ethanol, then he purified that and made a few beverages from it. But while the science creates a chemically pure vodka, some argue that it lacks soul and character. Adam Rogers, author of Proof: The Science of Booze, joins us for how this vodka helps fight climate change.
