Because sometimes, that’s all it takes — a small shift in what we choose to believe — to make the day a little better, and to make us a little more awake, alive… and ascending.

    Each weekday, we climb together — rising above the noise, finding the flow, and getting grounded in what really matters so you can live your day with more meaning, connection, and ease.

    75. A Better Relationship with Food Starts with a Better Relationship with Yourself Aug 03, 2022
    Show notes

    Dropping weight and living a healthier life overall is less about counting calories, and more about getting rid of unproductive beliefs and building a better relationship with yourself.

    Not too long ago, after having tried every diet in the world, our longtime listener Joy finally broke up with sugar, alcohol, and the false sense of accomplishment that comes with following the latest "cutting edge" diet. Not surprisingly, that moment completely transformed her life.

    The question then is: In our wellness journey, how do we rid ourselves of those substances, practices, and beliefs that hold us back from making real progress?

    Let's explore!

    In this episode, Joy breaks down the major periods in her life that contributed to an unhealthy relationship with food—in particular dependency on sugar and alcohol. It got to the point where she started hopping from fad diet to fad diet, to getting addicted even to the gym!

    Somewhere down the line, Joy came across Molly's podcast and discovered the magic of celebrating small wins, and that the road to greater health and wellness was less about counting calories and more of an attitude game. Listen in as she and Molly discuss how her life has changed since she gave up her addictions and began to build a better relationship with herself!

    Episode Quotes

    • "My life was more vibrant without sugar and flour. You can do this every day: To be open and to be caring for myself, to be curious, to check in and maybe set some things down. And I don't mean setting food down; but, setting some attitudes down." – Joy
    • "If I can look up and be with the world, be with people, with my heart open, it's a whole better world than what's on my plate, what's on the scale, and what size is on the tag on my clothes." – Joy

    Key Highlights

    • A bad relationship with food can usually be traced back to unproductive beliefs developed in your childhood (ex. body image insecurities);
    • If an "expert" tells you there's only one way to do something, run as far away from them as you can;
    • For every step forward, no matter how small, celebrate it. Call it your "atta girl/boy" moments. Dramatic transformations are the result of many tiny wins;
    • If you're not motivated, there's probably a very good reason why. Our wisest mind wants us to do loving things for ourselves. Sometimes it means rigidity, and sometimes it means putting the scale out of your mind;
    • Ultimately, it's the inner work that matters. Your life will not change for the better if you don't have an amazing relationship with yourself!

    74. How to Reignite Your Sexual Pleasure with Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

    Are you craving more pleasure in your life? You're not the only one!

    Countless women are either craving more sexual pleasure in their life or they're unaware of how much they're craving great sex. People who experience frequent pleasure and connection to their sexuality are happier and more connected to themselves and the world. Makes sense, right?

    So, are you ready to join the fun?

    Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus, a certified medical sex therapist, has truly pioneered the blending of physiological and psychological expertise in her approach to sex therapy. She believes that the same sense of shame, guilt, and "not enoughness" are the same things people struggle with regarding sex and food/eating.

    Let's explore!

    In this episode, Molly and Bat Sheva discuss the morality of the biology of obesity, why it's important to have a healthy sex life (with or without a partner), and the biggest stigmas and myths about sex that are harming us every single day. She talks about the reasons why women struggle to have orgasms and how to overcome that, the parallel beliefs between food and sex, and the most underused tool in women's sexual arsenals.

    Episode Quotes

    • "The more you realize that your sex life is not static, that it is a constantly evolving, changing, living, breathing thing, the better you're going to be at bumping up and down those little road bumps and keeping your sex life alive and vibrant for, hopefully, your whole life." – Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus
    • "Sex with yourself can be the BEST sex." – Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus

    Key Highlights

    • Sex is just as important in a relationship as intimacy and communication;
    • If you have a low sex drive, it's not in your head and it's not necessarily because of your relationship. Do not blame and shame yourself! You are not broken;
    • One of the biggest myths about sex is that sex is stagnant, or that your sex life will stay the same for your whole life. In reality, this is totally false;
    • If you're reliant on one person for pleasure, you're going to be in trouble! Learning how to have great sex with yourself can seriously change your life;
    • If you put on weight and you're not feeling sexy or you think your partner won't find you sexy, the world is not ending. Working to have some type of relationship with your sexuality can help you reconnect with your sexual energy and nurture your sexual desire – leading to more pleasure;
    • To have a healthy sexual relationship with yourself, start by slowing down and exploring your body parts. Then, activate your brain by fantasizing, using your imagination, and being playful!

    73. My Experience With Long COVID and How It Impacted My Eating Disorder Jul 20, 2022
    Show notes

    What is true? That's a powerful question; one that Molly is asking herself and sharing her answer with you today.

    Molly has listened to stories of people's transgressions against themselves, whether it be binging, starving, drinking until blackout, the list goes on. Though, based on her experience, there are three real truths behind why we transgress, particularly with food. Not being able to set and enforce healthy boundaries, trouble finding nourishment and nurturance from other sources, and not having enough joy in life.

    In this episode, Molly breaks down her scary experience of having covid-19 (twice) and the impact it's had on her eating disorder. She details the feelings she had when she realized that she had gained 10-15 pounds, how she overcame the overwhelm of gaining weight while sick, and the nuggets of truth she learned along her journey.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "I had to really be cautious and extremely cognizant of what a loving action toward myself was." – Molly Carmel
    • "Nobody gets well through fear, no one well through force, and no one gets well through facts." – Molly Carmel

    Key Highlights

    • Don't compare your story to other people's stories. Instead, listen and identify how you can relate;
    • It can be hard not to attach yourself to what your body looks like, especially when you've gained weight. But instead of going back to hardcore weight loss tactics, identify and choose what actions are going to be most loving to you;
    • You are lovable no matter what. Even if your body or your physical symptoms never change a day in your life, it WILL be okay;
    • If you're living in shame and fear, nothing will ever be enough and nothing will change for the better. Acceptance is the only place from which we can change;
    • If you've lost connection with your Self, redefine what self-love and self-worth mean to you. Find something you can be grateful for today. It's simple, yet profound!

    72. Recognizing Your Wise Mind Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

    Have you ever had a moment in your life where you just experienced a deep knowing about something? Needed to end a relationship? Needed to begin a different career? Needed to break up with sugar? This is your wise mind speaking to you. Molly is talking all about the wise mind we all have, what it is, and how to interact with it.

    In its most basic sense, Molly likens the wise mind to your gut feeling. Like Olivia Pope, herself, it is just a sureness that you have about something. But why is this such a big deal? For too long Molly has heard people say that they can't trust themselves with certain food or even having a scale in their house. If we want to be the best versions of ourselves, then we can not afford to have that lack of trust.

    Enter the wise mind. Molly explains in the episode that when we are in wise mind, binging is not a thing. Our wise mind will tell us what we can handle and, in essence, we automatically get that trust in ourselves back. With some mindfulness practice of meditation and some time, our wise mind may be the greatest gift we could ever seek out for ourselves.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "When we are in wise mind– when we are in our own internal wisdom– there's no binging… There's no restricting, there's no scale obsession, there's no body hate, there's no overdrinking, there's none of it." –Molly Carmel
    • "Urgency is never wise mind… If it can't wait, it's not wise." –Molly Carmel

    Key Highlights

    • If you don't know how a certain food will react with you, the best advice would be to try it;
    • Eating disorders, addiction, and cravings have stolen from us for so long that as we heal, trusting ourselves is more important than ever;
    • Your wise mind is a general knowing, an internal wisdom that you have;
    • Being able to distinguish your wise mind from your emotional mind requires practice and the ability to get quiet and tapped in;
    • Mindfulness is refocusing your attention back to your wise mind;
    • A best practice for meditation with wise mind as the goal, is to recognize once you have lost focus and bring your attention back to your meditation.

    71. Has America Always Been Obsessed with Going to the Gym? Jul 06, 2022
    Show notes

    Did you know that in America's fitness-crazed, obsessive society that it was once strange not just for women to go to the gym, but also men? In today's episode, Molly is interviewing Natalia Petrzela– a historian, writer, teacher, and activist– about our history of fitness culture and walks us through its interesting (and polarizing) spectrum.

    This episode starts out with something that comes up often in the show– how destructive the diet and fitness culture can be. Natalia even brings about an interesting point saying that we have "moralized" our food decisions. Ever heard of a "sinful" chocolate cake? Or when you eat kale you're "being good?" Even words like "detoxifying" and "eating clean" have raised the stakes and increased the pressure on something that is supposed to be nourishing and pleasant, making it destructive and damaging. So how did we get here?

    Well, as Natalia admits, any historian will tell you that it wasn't just one moment, it was a process. As the episode progresses, Molly and Natalia's discussion spans decades (over 100+ years)! There was a moment where, for men, it was considered deviant to focus on your body. For women, you were considered masculine– some even going as far to say that your uterus would fall out… yikes. In the 1920's this evolved into advice of restricting your diets to retain a womanly figure and keep the attention of your husband. In the 1950's we get a first glimpse on the TV screen of women exercising and in the 1960's, your thirties have become your new twenties, ladies. So where do we go from here?

    A purpose that Natalia found necessary to write her book, FIT NATION: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession, was to find a productive way of talking about weight loss. So a solution to create this productive way to talk about weight loss, or "releasing weight" as Molly says, is loving exercise. Natalia captures this idea by saying exercise on your own terms.

    70. What You Can Achieve When You Go All In Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

    Have you ever found that if you are indecisive about something that the best approach is to just dive in? In today's episode that is exactly what is being talked about with Breaking Up with Sugar Warrior, Martha. Molly introduces us to Martha and her "all in" approach she has had in her relationship with food.

    Let's paint part of the picture of Martha's journey. "I can do anything, but I can't give up chocolate." What a statement. Is it one that you can resonate with? *Spoiler Alert* You can. Even if you replace the word chocolate with something else, it is something that so many of us can relate to. Martha truly believed this about herself. Having known each other for many years, Martha had a mutual friend that was helped by Molly and, in turn, bought Molly's book in support.

    Now it's time for the other part of the painting. Martha had many circumstances that had a subconscious pull for her to become a stress-eater. Feeling like an outsider in many different ways that many of us can relate to– a sense of being a minority in public school, being American and living in Sweden, a traumatic divorce. This led to a 20-30 pound range of weight that Martha would yo-yo in between. When she became pregnant with her son and started nursing, her weight seemed to skyrocket. As Martha says, she looked in the mirror one day and even thought to herself, "Oh my God, what happened to me?" This led her to a commitment of a morning routine of working out to where she lost most of that weight, but came back to that 20-30 pound range.

    Now– Enter Molly. Martha picks up Molly's book that she bought to support her and resonated with so much of what she read, that she decided to go all in– not just give up select food items. Admittedly, the first 7-10 days were the hardest for Martha, but with the camaraderie of a cohort of like-minded individuals in the Facebook group and her all-in attitude, Martha found success and proved to herself that even chocolate would not stand in her way.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "Diet culture's got us hooked real early in this idea that there is an ideal that we should be striving for, and it's not the one that we're sitting in right now." –Molly Carmel
    • "It (Breaking Up With Sugar) was almost an experiment. Let's see if I can walk through the fire of giving it up, and then see how it affects me." –Martha

    Key Highlights

    • Many of us, like Martha, have a realization fairly young that we do not look like how we "should," diet culture is so pervasive and affects children so young;
    • If we find ourselves and our relationship with food to be triggered by moments of stress, common threads that are shared are bullying and divorce;
    • Another issue with diet culture today is that the camaraderie that is often advertised as community can easily turn into peer pressure;
    • There are some that need a gradual approach to stop and addiction, but for many, going all in and stopping altogether can be beneficial;
    • We have to be able to own when something is or isn't our food– Martha and Molly talk about this topic throughout the episode;
    • The journey with our food or breaking up with sugar can often lead to places we had no intention of going– for Martha, it was a reawakening of her spirituality in regards to Buddhism and meditation.

    69. Going on the Upward Spiral with Dr. Alex Korb (Part 2 of 2) Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

    Dr. Alex Korb is back for part 2 of the Upward Spiral discussion with Molly. In the second half of the interview, Molly and Alex talk all things related to brain-based solutions to overcome the downward spiral.

    The two start off the discussion by talking about the power of reframing certain situations in our minds. Dr. Alex describes it as the power to be able to imagine things that don't exist yet and being able to make decisions based on those imagined solutions. With the power of reframing, instead of criticism, our prefrontal cortex can differentiate between feelings and actions and know that they are separate.

    This segues into Molly's question to Alex. What else can we do to not go through a downward spiral? Dr. Alex talks about several things here, but two important topics of note are the already mentioned separating feelings from action. When we are able to do this, we realize that our feelings are not our reality. This also lends itself to the next suggestion from Dr. Alex, we have to know the difference between things we can control and things that we can't control. As he explains in the episode, literally the second we make a mistake, there is nothing we can do about it. We can't go back and *not* eat the cookie. What we can do is take a moment to become aware and use this mistake to learn from and influence our future decisions.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "There are millions of things in the world that are true– most of them are irrelevant." –Dr. Alex Korb
    • "Negative emotions are good if you use them to take positive action." –Dr. Alex Korb

    Key Highlights

    • Deeper parts of our brains follow an animal-type response rather than follow logic, this is why we habitually do the things we do at certain stress points;
    • Our prefrontal cortex and habit circuitry are often at odds with each other when it comes to goal attainment;
    • Reframing is a mindset shift that is the exact same as imaginary play with children, being able to imagine a solution that does not exist and then act on it;
    • Awareness is key when we are wanting an upward spiral, when awareness is present, our analytical prefrontal cortex is able to separate feeling from action;
    • Some upward skills include recognizing thoughts and emotions aren't your reality, sleep, compassion, and realizing what is in our control;
    • When we make a mistake, rather than trigger a downward spiral, we should recommit to what is important to us.

    68. Going on the Upward Spiral with Dr. Alex Korb (Part 1 of 2) Jun 15, 2022
    Show notes

    In today's episode, Molly welcomes back Dr. Alex Korb! Molly and Alex are getting down to the why behind our brain behavior– why certain actions may trigger negative thoughts, and what we can do to go on an upward spiral rather than downward.

    As the episode starts, Dr. Alex sums up what we talked about the last time he was on– when downward spirals are triggered. To review that, think about being invited to a party, but thinking to yourself you don't want to go and then this triggers the action of not going then that triggers other negative thoughts and emotions. If we translate this to food and think about eating a cupcake when we know we shouldn't… ring any bells, anyone?

    The downward spiral is the problem, now let's talk solution. The moment a mistake has been made, there is literally nothing we can do about it anymore. That being said, when we have awareness of that, it allows us to approach ourselves with a sense of compassion and grace. We are human. Next time, we will have a plan to not make the same mistakes. Speaking of plan, when the stressor (whatever it may have been) is no longer present, we can plan ways to do better next time. Our brains want control, what we can control is creating a plan before times of distress so we know what to do when the crisis does inevitably happen.

    Episode Quotes

    • "Your brain wants you safe, not happy. It doesn't care if you're happy." –Molly Carmel
    • "You're not broken, this is just how the human brain works. You're human." –Dr. Alex Korb

    Key Highlights

    • The problem is the downward spiral. Once a thought pops into your head, it will trigger a habit like a stimulus response which can lead to negative thoughts;
    • You can't change everything, but you do have the power to turn the volume up on positive emotions or turn the volume down on unhelpful habits;
    • It is an empowering thought that we are not broken, we are human. This is just how the brain works, separating us as the person from how our brain functions;
    • Our brains cannot distinguish between a good habit versus a bad habit because it acts in the short term which is why it can be difficult to break some habits;
    • If we understand the why of what we do, it allows us to approach our actions and mistakes with a sense of compassion for ourselves;
    • Because it may take longer to feel the benefit of good habits, we should create plans and practice those skills when we are NOT activated.

    About Dr. Alex Korb

    67. Living a Big and Beautiful Life Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

    Molly is welcoming back to the show, Breaking Up with Sugar Warrior, Laura W. Laura was first on the show earlier this year in January, but is back to talk about her journey in Portugal and Spain. The theme of this episode can be summed up in one phrase, and is something that Molly likes to say to her audience "Live a big, beautiful life."

    To set the stage in answer to that mantra, Laura takes us through how she overcame any obstacle that presented itself during her trip. Molly points out that when our brains are faced with an opportunity, decision fatigue can often set in and we shut down. Knowing this would be an issue, Laura embraced this challenge by creating a clear line of things she would shut down automatically– things like wine, sugar, or flour. Being present with herself allowed her to gain clarity and be intentional, which granted her the ability to truly enjoy her trip– empowering her to truly believe she could live a big, beautiful life.

    A question that came through her mind often is something that Molly brings up as well, "In this situation, what is the best you can do?" This is a question that can help any of us when we are faced with a situation like Laura's. As Molly says in the episode, we should not let our relationship with food be the thief that steals our joy.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "It's about having a big, beautiful life, not about sticking to the meal plan… Then the meal plan becomes a prison." –Molly Carmel
    • "I, in no way, wanted the scale to measure how my trip was." –Laura W.

    Key Highlights

    • People are seeking rigidity– this is what diet culture does to us. Are we good or are we bad? We are more than this.
    • We can't let fear of messing up our meal plan steal our joy away from experiencing the best that life has to offer.
    • There is a tension that some of us have, as Laura states, between the rules we have of ourselves and having the freedom to trust ourselves.
    • Before any trip or event such as this, it takes planning. Be aware and intentional with what you are going to do, this will yield clarity.
    • To overcome the idea of rigidity, we must have flexibility and grace with ourselves– a form of self-care and love.
    • Think to yourself, "In this situation, what is the best I can do?"
    • Not being disappointed in yourself makes a big difference in your motivation to do things.

    66. Gut Health 101 with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz (Part 2 of 2) Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

    Dr. B is back in today's episode with Molly for part two all about gut health. In this episode, Molly starts out with hard-hitting questions about what the problem is behind our gut health–what are the things that we do that completely wreck our gut microbiome? Dr. B breaks it down to these factors: saturated fat, sugar (including flours), salts, processed foods, alcohol, and Molly's topic of choice, artificial sweeteners.

    The episode shifts when the two start discussing how our dietary choices influence our emotions–rather than what you crave, it becomes a question of *why* you crave. If the latter half of this episode had a theme it could be summed up by the phrase "progress over perfection." This mantra propels the discussion to center around some quick tips on how to improve our gut health that include: eating a diversity of plants, a minimum of seven hours of sleep, a consistent sleep schedule, early dinner time, and no screen time before bed.

    Tune in!

    Episode Quotes

    • "In less than 24 hours after a meal, you are already changing your gut microbiome." –Dr. Will Bulsiewicz
    • "I think one of the main problems people have in their relationship with food is that they don't know how to make mistakes." –Molly Carmel

    Key Highlights

    • Everyone has a past journey that will influence their future relationship with food and gut health.
    • When our dietary choices can affect our gut microbiome in less than 24 hours, choosing what we eat is truly an act of self-love.
    • Anywhere we can start to improve our relationship with food is going to be a beautiful movement toward a full expression of health.
    • Because perfection does not exist, striving to achieve it can be damaging and cause stress and anxiety– two other factors that affect our gut health.
    • According to some preliminary studies, our gut microbiome can even be linked to controlling our impulses.
    • The values we place importance on in our lives influence how we interact with food and our gut health.
    • At the end of the day, all we can do is the best we can. Keeping that in mind, mistakes are inevitable but not so powerful that they wreck our progress.
