    84. Becoming Who You Were Meant to Be with Joseph Sheehey Oct 05, 2022
    Show notes

    Today's guest, Joseph Sheehey, holds nothing back in sharing the details of his struggles with depression, suicidal thoughts, his career, as well as his views on medicine and healing. Joseph's mission is to have conversations that are nuanced that allow us to hear and understand why we think the way we do. He wants to share his experience with medicine and how that impacted his mission.

    When Joseph first struggled with depression in high school, he didn't know how to ask for help. Like many, Joseph believed that he had to prove himself and in order to prove himself, he had to work himself into the ground. Thoughts like, "you're not enough" creeped in. Seeing a therapist was his first step, but it was only surface level. Through college, Joseph never really dealt with the sadness and decided suicide was the only answer. This was the beginning of Joseph's journey through holistic healing utilizing CBT and EMDR among other things.

    Molly and Joseph go on to discuss the various outlets they each have utilized in their healing journey. This includes meditation, breathing techniques, cold plunging, etc. Molly and Joseph go on to talk about his business, Cured. Cured was born from Joseph's decision to create products and infuse them into the health and fitness industry and rebrand cannabis. Cured products are infused with adaptogens, functional mushrooms, and cannabis which are dried and cured in order to process them. This is where the name Cured comes from. Joseph says Cured is the future of the supplement industry and what people can utilize to truly optimize themselves. Using the healing properties of nature, Cured's mission is to show people how to do this and change their lives through it.

Molly and Sara explore her journey through EMDR, reintroducing alcohol to her diet, her personal struggles during COVID, reevaluating her spirituality, and working on herself through therapies and counseling.

    82. Coaching at Its Core with Julie Reisler Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes

    After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's, Julie Reisler discusses her wake-up call from her body alerting her to stop consuming sugar. She has 19 years experience in recovering from sugar addiction.

    Molly and Julie relate their journeys of leaving sugar behind and how it can be easy to fall prey to the mind games associated with lifestyle changes. It can be easy to succumb to the "diet culture" where if you mess up once then you might as well throw away the progress made and just "eat the whole box of mac and cheese". Julie explores how she gave herself compassion and how she was able to embrace her progressive recovery.

    Imagine training for a new job in which you are surrounded by the one thing you are abstinent from: sugar. This was reality for Julie! She delves into her career beginning with working in a bakery. She claims her connection to God increased because it was all she had to rely on. This is what eventually would lead to the beginning of her coaching career in working with clients who want to change their life. She considers her work a sacred union with the people she works with.

    Julie breaks down what to look for in a coach. She believes that anyone you coach is an expert in themselves. It's not the job of a coach to be the expert or give advice. The core to it is being non-judgemental, holding space where all emotions are welcome, making sure who you are coaching has what they need, deep listening, knowing how to reflect, and powerful questioning.

    Episode Quotes

    • "You have to remember you are building something." -Molly Carmel
    • "The message comes from the mess" -Julie Reisler
    • "Find a coach that matches your dreams" -Molly Carmel

    Key Highlights

    • The humble beginnings of Julie Reisler and her struggle with sugar addiction
    • Combating "diet culture" and rising above the temptation it can bring
    • How Julie relied on her belief in God to get her out of the trenches and how sometimes it can be the only way to recovery
    • The nitty gritty details of what it means to be a coach and what to look for in a coach versus a consultant

    81. Power Circles: You Are Not Alone in Your Eating Disorder with Michelle Garside Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

    On today's episode, Molly sits down with her close friend Michelle Garside. Michelle begins the conversation by disclosing her journey through her eating disorder. She begins by discussing her experience with pregnancy and postpartum eating disorders and the struggles that come with it.

    Molly and Michelle dig into the thoughts that can creep in while struggling with eating disorders and relate to each other's experiences. Family roots run deep, and Michelle acknowledges her family history related to eating disorders, body image, and how she has grown the most due to her mother's mental illness.

    Michelle started eating in secret at a very young age mimicking some of what she observed at home. She discusses the repercussions of this on her childhood, and how it then impacted her teenage years. After researching eating disorders on the internet in high school, she taught herself how to become anorexic which brought on many health problems for Michelle. This led to her being bulimic for 15 years.

    After coming home from studying abroad in Australia, Michelle was diagnosed with several addictions in a hospital then headed to rehab. She went to OA and found it comforting for her and found "her people" there. In 2015, she began dating again and met her now husband, Eric, who would change her perspective of her addiction for the rest of her life.

    Tune in to hear the details of how Michelle lived with her eating disorder, what the days to recovery looked like and how she continues to grow after being abstinent from bulimia.

    Episode Quotes

    • "Life, people, things…are complex." -Michelle Garside
    • "I'm hyper vigilant that nobody's going to bully me, let me bully me first." -Molly Carmel
    • "I am not alone in my eating disorder" -Michelle Garside

    Key Highlights

    • Family history connections to eating disorders

    79. How to Find Your Balance by Embracing Your Recovery Mind Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

    When it comes to breaking up with sugar (or any addiction), the answer for most people is not to become overly strict and unforgiving with yourself.

    According to Molly, "The answer is never the opposite. The answer is balance."

    To illustrate this, Molly breaks down the three states of mind as defined by the practice of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and how this concept can shed some light on diet culture and binge eating.

    These three states are addict mind, clean mind, and—combining the first two—clear mind (which Molly prefers to call recovery mind).

    Listen in as she explains why adopting this middle-ground mindset is so much more powerful and sustainable than attempting to do a complete 180 on a life consumed by addiction or binge eating.

    Episode Quotes

    • "What diet culture has made us buy into, is that clean mind is the ideal. The problem is, what we think our ideal is, for our long-term relationship with food, is so far from the ballpark where we want to be living in." – Molly Carmel
    • "The answer is never the opposite. The answer is balance." – Molly Carmel

    Key Highlights

    • Your addict mind takes over when your urges control your thoughts, emotions, and actions. It's a mindset of urgency;
    • The idea of the clean mind, on the other hand, is almost no better than the addict mind, because it sums up the biggest problem of diet culture: being too hard and unforgiving with yourself while going through your journey. It's unsustainable and unrealistic. It's a mindset of cockiness;
    • The center of the venn diagram, the clear mind (which Molly prefers to call the "recovery" mind) is a much healthier mindset to adapt. It's a mindset of brutal honesty, integrity!

    78. Breaking Up With Sugar by My 40TH Birthday With Marshall Malone Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

    Molly sits down with a listener of the podcast to talk about his inspiring road to recovery as it has been unfolding so far.

    Marshall Malone is on the fourth day of his Breaking Up With Sugar journey. Marshall, a digital marketing expert, recently got in touch with Molly, and he's here today to talk about the toughest part about breaking up with any addiction: getting through those first few days.

    In this episode, Marshall discusses his fears and concerns, as well as his hopes and intentions, as he soldiers on for the next 66 days—to completely leave behind his food addiction by his 40th birthday!

    You can follow Marshall's journey on Instagram at @themarshallmalone

    Episode Quotes

    • "It really threatens people's relationship with food when we make these big changes." – Molly Carmel
    • "I'm not pressuring myself too much because that's what has ultimately led to my failures." – Marshall Malone

    Key Highlights

    • Nobody likes their truth being threatened. When we (or especially other people) try to change our relationship with food, we will hesitate or outright deny that we have a problem;
    • We need to create a food plan that allows us to have grace and forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. We need to accept that life gets in the way sometimes, and that's okay as long as we always pick ourselves back up;
    • Instead of pushing yourself too hard at the start of your journey, commit to the small wins. The best food plan is a sustainable plan!

    77. Overcoming Food Addiction by Embracing Honesty and Humility with Nancy Kaley Aug 17, 2022
    Show notes

    When it comes to breaking up with sugar, there is no "magic pill", and one size definitely does not fit all.

    Nancy Kaley BS, LADC is the Program Director and Facilitator of the COR Retreat, a food recovery program that teaches a way to live free from obsession with food and the excess weight it causes. Her story once again proves that the journey towards better health and wellness is one of self-determination and never giving up.

    In this episode, Nancy and Molly discuss the limitations of "mindful" or "intuitive" eating and how her very first session at COR Retreat changed her entire paradigm around her addictions. They talk about why having support, combined with a large dose of honesty and humility, are the keys to sustained recovery once you walk out of the treatment center!

    For more about the COR program, visit cormn.com

    Episode Quotes

    • "Addiction really convinces you that it is the solution, not the problem." – Molly Carmel
    • "Your recovery needs to be as big as your addiction." – Molly Carmel
    • "Before you react, take a breath so that you respond rather than react." – Nancy Kaley

    Key Highlights

    • When your life becomes more "important" than your recovery, it's time to slow down and reassess your priorities. Keep the acronym SLIP (Sobriety Loses Its Priority) in mind to catch yourself at these critical moments;
    • There is not a lot of therapy you can do if you're indulging in your addictions every day regardless;
    • On your road to recovery, focus on one meal at a time; then, commit to doing tomorrow what you did today;
    • Keep checking in with yourself to ensure that your recovery really is that important to you. You're treating a primary illness, so it needs to be on top of your list of priorities at all times;
    • If you're genuinely on the path to ridding yourself of food addiction, stay humble and compassionate. Avoid posturing as "healthier than thou". You do not have the luxury to get offended by a food pusher!

    76. Why Seeing Disease as a Gift is the First Step to True Healing with Rob Wergin Aug 10, 2022
    Show notes

    "Diseases, discomforts, and dysfunctions of the body are actually gifts," says today's special guest Rob Wergin, "gifts created by our soul and by the Divine. They are powerful gifts packaged in ways we cannot ignore… and because we cannot ignore them, we are given the opportunity to do something about them."

    Rob Wergin has provided healing transformation to over 300,000 people in the last 19 years and has led large and small groups throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is featured in the full-length film HEAL along with Deepak Chopra, Michael Beckwith, Bruce Lipton, Gregg Braden, and many others. At a young age, Rob realized he was able to heal animals and communicate with spirits. Not yet understanding these gifts, he learned to ignore them. Following 30 years in corporate America, Rob received what he now calls the "Ultimate Cosmic 2 x 4."

    In this time of despair, Rob asked for the purpose of his life, and the answer transformed him. Since then, Rob has dedicated his life to being a vessel for Divine love and light to benefit others. Raised in a strictly Christian home in the heart of South Dakota's rich Native American culture, Rob draws from both of these traditions and works with people of all spiritual persuasions on how to heal yourself.

    In this episode, Rob and Molly do a deep dive into Rob's journey over the past two decades as a "Divine Conduit for Divine Energies". They discuss the often overlooked yet powerful reality that your beliefs inform your biology, and why connecting the soul to the energy of the Divine is the pathway for any transformation!
