The rise of profanity in the pulpit Mar 19, 2024

Show notes

There is a reported escalation of vulgarities by pastors in their sermons and writing. This despite the clear biblical command: “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving” (Ephesians 5:4). As John Piper comments, “Crudeness is the sludge that accrues when the fountain of Godward thanks dries up.” What causes this “fountain” to dry up? The answer is more relevant to evangelical Christians than you might think.

Show notes

His tactic is simple but effective. He’ll ask the person in distress about their plans for the following day, then invites the person back to the bridge if their plan doesn’t work out. In a day when the threat of nuclear weapons continues to make headlines, how can we be more like Kevin Briggs? How can we bring hope to bear on fearful situations?

Why congress’ attempt to ban TikTok matters Mar 15, 2024

Show notes

Earlier this week, the House of Representatives easily passed legislation that would essentially ban TikTok from the country unless its parent company sold its American user base. And while the bill faces a rockier path through the Senate, President Biden has already said he would sign it if it gets to his desk. But what’s actually in the bill and why are some wary that it won’t stop with TikTok?

Show notes

US intelligence agencies issued their 2024 Annual Threat Assessment this week, warning that our country faces an “increasingly fragile world order.” In the book of Job, we learn that God uses our challenges to rescue us from challenges and our suffering to save us from suffering. Today, we focus on how to take our anticipatory stress about tomorrow and transform it to inner strength found through the cross.

Show notes

NASA is preparing its Europa Clipper spaceship for an October launch to orbit Jupiter’s moon. Do you go to the Lord as a means to an end, or to be in awe of him as a transformed person?

Oppenheimer wins seven Oscars: What “a movie of the moment” says about our cultural future Mar 11, 2024

Show notes

Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards at the Oscars last night. The movie has been described as a “feel-bad hit for our feel-bad age.” In a culture of relative morality and pessimistic worldviews, we can rely on God’s principles found in the gospel to uniquely respond with the hope we long to embrace today.

Biden's “feisty” State of the Union Mar 08, 2024

Show notes

President Biden’s State of the Union address last night left many surprised, both by what he said and even more so by the way in which he said it. Yet, of all the policies and promises with which he filled more than an hour of airtime, how many does he actually have the power to accomplish? Moreover, should we see those roadblocks as a feature or a bug of our political system? The answers matter to more than just this November’s election.

Is it true that “the State of the Union is strong”? Mar 07, 2024

Show notes

President Biden will likely begin tonight’s address with the declaration, “The State of the Union is strong,” an assertion made by nearly every president in this setting since Ronald Reagan began the practice in 1983. In tonight’s case, some commentators will agree with the president’s claim, while others will disagree. Each will try to convince us that their version of reality is our reality. This is because our “post-truth” culture believes that truth is perception. If we believe something to be true, it is therefore true for us, or so we think. This viewpoint is becoming more dangerous now than at any time in human history.
