Will the bird flu become the next pandemic? Apr 03, 2024

Show notes

According to the CDC, Avian influenza has infected more than 82 million poultry in forty-eight US states and has now spread to dairy cattle in the US. What we cannot see can be even more dangerous than what we can see, since it’s harder to prepare for the former than the latter. This principle is relevant to our souls and to the soul of our nation.

Was it “lucky” or “a miracle” that people survived the Baltimore bridge collapse? Apr 02, 2024

Show notes

The first section of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge has been removed from the Patapsco River and officials have opened a temporary shipping route around the wreckage. For those who did not survive—were they unlucky, or did God not favor them as he did those he spared miraculously? Choosing the right perspective is vital, not just for our personal flourishing but also for our national future.

Biden administration promotes Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday Apr 01, 2024

Show notes

The White House became embroiled in controversy over the weekend after issuing a “Proclamation on Transgender Day of Visibility, 2024” for Easter Sunday. This controversy is nothing new: Easter has been dividing skeptics and believers since Jesus rose from the dead. You and I can choose today to become evidence for the most compelling argument for Easter in our relativistic culture: the changed lives of Jesus’ followers.

Five minutes that doomed the Francis Scott Key Bridge Mar 29, 2024

Show notes

When the massive cargo ship Dali lost power early Tuesday morning, there were only a few minutes to act. The ship’s crew sent a mayday signal and dropped anchor, while transportation authority police officers stopped traffic heading to Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. Their actions likely saved many lives, but it was too late for seven road workers and an inspector on the bridge who could not be alerted in time. After the bridge collapsed, two were pulled alive from the water; two other bodies were found Wednesday, while four others are still missing and presumed dead.

Imagine that you’re driving across one such bridge when it is struck and collapses, plunging you into the water. A man standing safely on shore sees your plight and dives into the river to rescue you. He pulls you from your vehicle to safety but loses his life in the process.

If you could somehow thank him for his sacrifice, what would you say to him?

Why was Ronna McDaniel hired then fired by NBC News? Mar 28, 2024

Show notes

Ronna McDaniel was chairwoman of the Republican National Committee for seven years until her resignation earlier this month. Last Friday, NBC News announced that they’d hired her. Four days later, following criticism from many of the network’s commentators, she was fired. In our “philodoxical” (“love of opinion”) culture where all truth is subjective, what you believe before you read the news probably determines what you think after you read it. Today in Holy Week–Maundy Thursday–illustrates the eternal significance of this fact.

The bridge disaster in Baltimore and the Supreme Court abortion case Mar 27, 2024

Show notes

A container ship rammed into Baltimore’s largest bridge early yesterday morning, causing it to snap and plunge into the river below. Six people are presumed dead as of this morning. Later in the morning, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in the first major abortion case since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. At stake is access to the abortion pill mifepristone. Both news stories speak to the frailty and sacredness of all human life. As Christians, what can we do to influence our culture to advocate for life?

Could the attack in Russia happen here? Mar 26, 2024

Show notes

The latest on Kate Middleton’s cancer and the ISIS attack in Moscow Mar 25, 2024

Show notes

Princess Kate’s video announcement that she is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer shocked the world. But as Helen Lewis noted in the Atlantic, the princess was “bullied into this statement, because the alternative—a wildfire of gossip and conspiracy theories—was worse.”

The other headline news over the weekend was the horrific shooting at a Moscow concert venue that left at least 137 people dead. ISIS claimed responsibility. The US warned Putin of the possibility of such an attack, but he did not trust their motives.

Whether the issue is Kate Middleton’s health or jihadist terrorism, all truth is now opinion. Here’s why that’s such a major problem in our postmodern culture.
