Donald Trump named Time’s “Person of the Year” Dec 13, 2024

Show notes

Article Description

Donald Trump is Time’s Person of the Year. Of course, you didn’t get a vote. In nearly every dimension of your life, you are living with the consequences of decisions you didn’t make. But God is different, in ways that can change our lives and our world. Living biblically and acting redemptively may not earn you recognition by Time magazine or the secular authorities of our culture. However, living for God in this world will lead to his declaration in the next: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

Why I was wrong about the Dallas Cowboys: Beware “the things you don’t know you don’t know” Dec 12, 2024

Show notes

Article Description

The Dallas Cowboys are having a terrible year. One play from last Monday night’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals seemed to sum up their season: A Cowboys player deflected a Bengals punt late in the game. So, of course, one of their players touched and fumbled the ball. The Bengals recovered it, then scored a touchdown to win the game. The Dallas media and football social media have been scathing and unrelenting. Today we discuss what we can learn from situations with “unknown unknowns” and how the Baconian fallacy applies to our relationship with Christ.

Have archaeologists discovered the tomb of Santa Claus? Dec 11, 2024

Show notes

Article Description

Archaeologists may have found the original sarcophagus of Nicholas of Myra, the historic gift-giving figure on whom the Santa Claus tradition is based. St. Nicholas could not have imagined that he would become the roly-poly figure we call Santa Claus today, but he is part of one of many previously holy celebrations that have since fallen to secular holidays. Unlike the 4th-century saint, the Christ of Christmas is today all he has ever been and does all he has ever done.

Luigi Mangione charged with murder in death of insurance CEO: Jordan Peterson on “perhaps the greatest idea ever revealed” Dec 10, 2024

Show notes

Article Description

Twenty-six-year-old Luigi Mangione was charged last night with murder for last week’s deadly shooting of an insurance executive in Midtown Manhattan. One reason it took so long to find the UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin is that people celebrated the shooter as a quasi-folk hero. By contrast, as Jordan Peterson notes in his new book, the idea that we are made in God’s image is foundational to our society. If our value isn’t intrinsic, how then does society determine the individual value of a person? And what does God’s word say about it?

The reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral: “A monument that transcends religion” Dec 09, 2024

Show notes

Notre Dame Cathedral was officially reopened on Saturday in Paris after catching fire five years ago. The restoration has been beset with controversies, but the cathedral is ready to resume its status as a symbol of “the spirit of Paris,” the site of notable coronations (including that of Emperor Napoleon), and “a monument to the highest aspirations of artistic achievement that transcends religion and time.” How do we respond to declining religiosity in the secularized Western world?

Civil war in Syria escalates as rebels take Hama: Wrestling with complicated truths and simple lies Dec 06, 2024

Show notes

On Thursday, the Syrian rebel group led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took the city of Hama just days after taking control of Aleppo. While we often try to view global conflicts through the lens of good vs. evil, not all human conflicts can be so simply categorized. Attempting to fit complicated issues into simple boxes is one of the most common reasons people stumble into error. However, settling for anything less than the truth will always leave you worse off in the end.
