Entrepreneur spends $2 million a year on anti-aging regimen: Why does God allow death? Jan 07, 2025

Show notes

Despite the obvious reality of human finitude and mortality, tech millionaire Bryan Johnson says he spends upwards of $2 million a year on an anti-aging regimen he believes is enabling his body to “achieve the lowest possible biological age.” Johnson’s story, coupled with the other news of the morning, raises a question for me: Why does an all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful God allow death?

New Orleans attacker says dreams told him to join Islamic State: Does religion do more harm than good? Jan 06, 2025

Show notes

Officials are studying the “secret radicalization” of Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the alleged New Orleans attacker. The Telegraph reports that Jabbar was “visited by IS in his dreams.” He apparently made a series of video recordings prior to the attack. In one, he said he had several dreams telling him to join the Islamic State. When I read the Telegraph story on the religious motives behind the New Orleans atrocity, I imagined many people asking, Does religion do more harm than good in the world? It’s a great question. Today, we’ll explore the effects of religion throughout the world and the source of true change in people.

Global persecution of Christians continues to rise Jan 03, 2025

Show notes

Christianity is once again the most persecuted religion in the world according to the latest report from the International Christian Concern. While persecution against Christians has long been a fixture of the faith in places dominated by Islamic extremism, the report found that persecution has also increased in Latin American countries like Nicaragua and Venezuela—both traditionally Christian. It’s unlikely that Christianity will reach that level of persecution in the United States and other parts of the West; rather, the decline of faith in our culture will have to be through the slow atrophy of neglect rather than the swift attack of persecution. So what can we do to avoid that fate?

Terrorist inspired by ISIS attacks New Orleans Jan 02, 2025

Show notes

A pickup truck flying an Islamic State flag plowed into a large crowd in New Orleans’s French Quarter early yesterday morning, killing at least fifteen people and injuring more than thirty in what authorities are calling a terrorist assault. If we blame God when humans misuse their God-given freedom, should we not credit him when we use such freedom for good? Today we discuss what the psalmist meant when he penned, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). In a troubling world, we need this truth every day.

Show notes

As we welcome in 2025 and a new year, we look to bizarre good luck traditions around the world, from dropping apples to wearing polka dots to hanging onions on your door. In an effort to feel more in control of life, we find comfort in the fact that Jesus’ manhood was just as human as you and I. We look today at how Jesus modeled full faith in God for bringing not good luck but God’s will to his ministry. The same is available to you and to me.

The peril of AI and the path to transcendent hope: “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before.” Dec 30, 2024

Show notes

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “godfather of artificial intelligence,” is warning that AI could wipe out the human race within the next decade. He said the technology is developing “much faster” than he expected and could make humans the equivalents of “three-year-olds” and AI “the grown-ups.” In his view, “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before.” Is that so? In today’s article, we discuss the forces in our universe unknown and misunderstood by humanity—and the God who created it all.
