Roe v. Wade was decided on January 22, 1973. In response, this day each year is proclaimed “National Sanctity of Human Life Day” by pro-life supporters. When a woman aborts her child, she can typically do so privately: most abortions last year were the result of “medication abortions” rather than visits to an abortion clinic. What is true of abortion is true of most of our moral decisions. As a result, you and I have a personal role to play in protecting preborn children, a calling that pertains to every moral choice our society faces today. The good news is that it is a call every believer can answer in ways that save lives and change souls.

What would be President Trump’s “proudest legacy”? Jan 21, 2025
    Show notes

The inauguration of Donald J. Trump occupied center stage yesterday as he took hold of office as our forty-seventh president. The Times reported that the incoming president “wants to seize momentum” as he begins his administration. Mr. Trump was blunt about the challenges and problems he believes we are facing as a nation. But he also stated, “My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.” In today’s article, we consider a statement from a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sermon: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What does that look like in our lives and nation today?

Donald Trump, TikTok, and the power of the presidency: “A leader is a dealer in hope” Jan 20, 2025

TikTok went offline Saturday night after the Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law requiring its Chinese owner to sell the app by Sunday or face a ban. Then, after President-elect Trump said he would issue an executive order today to delay the ban, the company began restoring service. This is just one example of the power to be conferred on Mr. Trump when he takes the oath of office as our nation’s forty-seventh president. What is at the heart of that power? According to Napoleon Bonaparte, “A leader is a dealer in hope.” As Mr. Trump returns to the White House today, let’s consider Napoleon’s assertion and its implications for our nation and our future.

Israel to vote today on Gaza ceasefire deal: Who should get credit for the agreement? Jan 17, 2025

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a meeting of Israel’s security cabinet today to vote on the Gaza ceasefire deal after Israeli and Hamas negotiators worked out their remaining differences. Biden and Trump both claim credit for helping this deal progress to where it is today. David, a warrior king famous for his battlefield triumphs, nonetheless testified in Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lᴏʀᴅ our God.” In a time filled with perils and challenges, why should we follow his example?

President Biden’s farewell address to the nation: Why we need a biblical hope Jan 16, 2025
    Show notes

Request your copy of Wisdom Matters today!

On Wednesday night, President Biden addressed the nation for the last time from the Oval Office, and for the first time since announcing that he was withdrawing from the election last July. Going into the speech, most expected him to focus on his accomplishments over more than five decades in government and maintain a positive tone. However, while such an account was part of his address, the most memorable elements trended toward the challenging and ominous. Apostle Paul speaks to enduring through difficult times in a way that is vital for us to understand today.

Confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth begins in the Senate: Adversarial politics and the “steadfast love” of God Jan 15, 2025

The confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, began yesterday before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Democrats grilled him, while Republicans largely seemed to indicate their support. It seems that adversity is a foundational fact in every dimension of our world. It is therefore understandable that we would see the Creator of our world in the same way. This was certainly my experience for many years, even after I became a Christian. I’d like to tell you that story in the hope that it can encourage you in your story today.

    Article Description

President Joe Biden delivered his final foreign policy address yesterday, stating that a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal was “on the brink” of being finalized. Israel and Hamas have reportedly been presented with a “final” draft of such an agreement after a “breakthrough” was reached Sunday evening following talks between Qatar’s prime minister, Israel’s intelligence chiefs, and envoys for President Biden and President-elect Trump. A Palestinian source said he expected the deal to be finalized today if “all goes well.”

California church burns down, but “we can worship anywhere”: The transforming power and hope of grace Jan 13, 2025

    Article Description

More than twelve thousand structures have burned so far in California’s devastating wildfires, including many houses of worship. One was Altadena Community Church, built in the 1940s and known for its colorful stained glass. Even though the building burned, parishioners sang outdoors. “WE are the church! We can worship anywhere.” They’re right: “The God who made the world . . . does not live in temples made by man” (Acts 17:24). His transforming presence is as close as your next prayer. But there’s a catch—a temptation that many of us fall to in our lives.

So, instead of an army of third-party fact-checkers, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads will move to an X-style community notes form of moderation for most of their content.

A divisive tale of two American presidents: Political rancor and Christianity’s crucial role in our national future Jan 09, 2025
    Show notes

President-elect Donald Trump has been in the news a lot in recent days for controversial ideas on America’s global footprint. Meanwhile, former President Jimmy Carter lies in state at the Capitol this morning before being transported back to Georgia for internment this evening. The rancor of the political Left and Right against each other has seldom been so vividly on display at one time. Our partisan divisions are clearly reflected in a new Gallup report that shows a record-low percentage of Americans are satisfied with the way democracy is working in the US. These trends are symptomatic of a larger issue at work in our society, a factor that should evoke both grave concern and empowering spiritual hope for us today.
