On March 11, 1944, the B-24 bomber nicknamed “Heaven Can Wait” was shot down by Japanese antiaircraft gunners off the coast of the Pacific island of New Guinea. One of the crew member’s remains has been identified this past week, bringing his old letters home back into the news. This letter calls us, on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, to “take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.”

Have you heard of the 4B movement? From a “melting pot” to a “salad bowl” and the path to cultural unity Nov 18, 2024

Show notes

The “4-B movement” typifies the dissension and divisions growing in our culture after the recent elections. The divisiveness that is persisting and even growing after the elections is more dangerous than it might seem. Americans do not serve a king or an autocrat but one another. In our democracy, we vote for each other, do commerce with each other, and live in community with each other. If Americans cannot get along, America cannot get along.

FEMA official told workers to skip houses with Trump signs: Why divisiveness threatens our democracy and the gospel is our hope Nov 13, 2024

Show notes

A federal disaster relief official reportedly ordered workers to bypass the homes of Donald Trump’s supporters as they surveyed damage from Hurricane Milton in Florida. As a result, at least twenty homes with Trump yard signs or flags were not given the opportunity to qualify for assistance. If our political divisiveness continues, our consensual democracy will be imperiled. Our one hope is the unifying and transforming power of the gospel.

More than 90 percent of America’s counties shifted in favor of Donald Trump Nov 11, 2024

Show notes

More than 90 percent of counties shifted in favor of Donald Trump during last week’s election. For those whose values could be considered more conservative than progressive or liberal, this news perhaps indicates that our nation has not devolved from our Judeo-Christian moral foundations as far as many feared. But there is a cloud in this silver lining, one that requires action from each of us today.

As the nation works to analyze the political divide, we’re facing what David Brooks calls “a crisis of respect.” Fortunately, we’re not the first group to struggle with that problem. Today we look at the early church and three practical ways we can be welcoming to others just as Christ welcomed us.

Show notes

Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove called the 2024 presidential election “the most astonishing campaign in modern history.” After reading scores of reports on the results, I cannot find anyone who disagrees. But Daniel McCarthy’s explanation in the New York Times titled “This Is Why Trump Won” is by far the best explanation of the Republican victory I have seen. It also highlights a vital, even crucial insight for Christians seeking to serve Jesus in our post-Christian culture.
