The Corelink Solution with James Rosseau, Sr.

Do you find yourself wondering where your career is going at times? Feeling stuck in terms of how you might move forward? Or even wondering what it all means?

Don’t worry; you are not alone. Many, despite where they are in their career, feel the same way.

If the world were perfect, we would live the life of our favorite superheroes. We would stumble upon our superpowers (our gifts and talents) and even goof around with them for a while with our friends, but ultimately, we would find the purpose for which we were given those superpowers. We would even have a Yoda-like guide that helps us hone those superpowers as we work to fulfill that purpose.

While the world is not perfect, my guests and I will help you find your superpowers and hone them in pursuit of fulfilling your purpose.

    A little bit about James

James Rosseau Sr. is the founder and CEO of The Corelink Solution, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization committed to revitalizing communities through programs that empower people to reach their potential. With a passion for helping others and leading a “head and heart” mission, James has dedicated the remainder of his career to helping leaders achieve sustainable business growth. The leadership facilitation work he delivers as an entrepreneur allows him to fuel the non-profit.

With over 20 years of leadership experience in various industries, including insurance, healthcare, and financial services, James has created and guided high-performing teams by delivering double-digit growth, mergers and acquisitions, offshoring, outsourcing, startups, and well over 300 partnerships. Before pursuing his own entrepreneurial endeavors, James held various executive positions with companies such as JPMorgan Chase, Allstate, and LegalShield.

James has confronted and overcome major challenges but was able to persevere with his excellent work ethic and drive to make a positive change in the world. James earned his EMBA from Northwestern University and attained his undergraduate degree from the University of Phoenix.

As a devoted community member who enjoys staying active, James currently serves on the DeVry University Board of Trustees and as an executive coach and leadership facilitator for ThinkHuman, helping client partners and teams achieve sustainable growth. He is also the author of Success on Your Own Terms: 6 Promises to Fire up your Passion, Ignite Your Career and Create an Amazing Life. James believes in God’s unique plan and potential for each human being, as well as the right to pursue it through systems designed for their success, and draws his purpose from this testament.

12: How to Thrive in an Environment of Rapid Change: Business Processes, Supply Chains and Business Models with Sunil Chopra Nov 15, 2018
    Show notes

Whether you are just starting your business or operating a business that you wish to take to the next level, you will need to understand how to deal with changes taking place within the external environment.

On this episode, I am pleased to welcome Professor Sunil Chopra from the Kellogg School of Management. Professor Chopra discusses what entrepreneurs should be learning from Amazon in terms of opportunities, two key business processes that entrepreneurs need to pay attention to and how supply chain management thinking can be applied to any business to uncover opportunities.

    Key Highlights

The changing needs of students [2:45]

    • Dealing with the rate of change itself.
    • You have to learn how to explain the changes in the past while learning how these changes are applied to the future.
    • Requires people to have the ability to work with all different kinds of people in order to gain a broader perspective.

What entrepreneurs should be learning from Amazon in terms of opportunities – business models are changing rapidly [4:45]

    • The company shifted from online only to reaching people locally through the acquisition of wholefoods.
    • Realizing its outbound shipping is roughly 15% of UPS worldwide, it is now establishing Amazon logistics, to own its distribution of packages on the ground.

Two Business Processes that entrepreneurs need to pay attention to. [7:00]

    • First: People will develop complementary capabilities and businesses need to be careful about getting stuck in the middle. Blockbuster is a prime example – Netflix took the floor (the older movies) with a more efficient distribution model; Redbox took the new release wall and put them in vending machines all over the place.
    • Second: The opportunity for entrepreneurs to develop more peer to peer platforms.

Applying Supply Chain Management thinking to your business as an entrepreneur: Three Key Flows - - Even it if is a Digital Product [11:30]

    • Any supply chain involves all three flows. The entrepreneur needs to understand where they have opportunities.
    • Information: Using Amazon as an example. They are providing efficiencies on information on a lot of products at one time.
    • Product: They are giving you efficiency on the product, which is picked, packed and shipped from one place.
    • Funds: They are giving you efficiencies on funds as you only pay Amazon as opposed to the multiple suppliers of the products that you are purchasing.
    • You want to think about how you create value through these information flows.

Efforts to solve for deprived areas of education in India [16:00]

Professor Chopra’s Journey towards education [18:00]

What to look forward to in regard to Business Processes going forward [20:00]

    • Successful operations will have three parts
    • Designing the operating system – what should the process look like?
    • The management infrastructure – what metrics do I need?
    • The people – mindsets and behaviors? Every process is ultimately operated by people. Every industry has done a decent job on the first two pieces, but this third piece needs more attention.

What to look forward to in regard to Supply Chain Management going forward [21:30]

    • It will be very difficult to have an either/or in business in terms of online or brick and mortar, businesses will need both.

    Key Take-Aways

    1. Be thoughtful in starting your business. Start with your strengths, outsourcing all else where you can (e.g. how Amazon did online). Over time, you can disintermediate and take things in-house and gain more margin if you want to grow those capabilities.
    2. As it relates to Business Processes, be mindful of the growth of Peer-to-Peer platforms and the opportunities they present.
    3. Supply Chain Management: Examine the three flows within your supply chain for opportunities for opportunities.

9: Buying a Small Business: Family, Finances and Growth with Ricky Regalado Oct 04, 2018
    Show notes

There are many ways to enter into business ownership and on this episode, Ricky Regalado, a serial entrepreneur, shares how he entered business ownership by way of acquisition. He provides insights from the mistakes made, how he has grown the company from five employees to over 200 over the past five years, while still making it feel like a family business and shares a vision of the exciting road ahead.

    Key Highlights

Cold Turkey plunge from Corporate to owning a business [2:00]

    • Went into the cleaning business, purchased it from his cousin.
    • Three week turnaround period from getting advice, getting a business loan, liquidating some assets and acquiring the business

The first year of transition [4:45]

    • 18 months of struggle: 16-hour days, a few considerations of making it a “secondary thing.”
    • Recognized some of the rookie mistakes in terms of the original understanding of the books (financials of the business).
    • Crash course on business management from hiring employees to managing through net profits.
    • The balance of education versus doing before going into business.
    • They did not personally prepare financially, as the books of the business showed a positive cash flow equal to their current income, which they found not to be true. This was a major lesson learned.

    Funding the business [10:45]

    • Securing traditional loans are difficult. You cannot get them until your company has proven cash flows.
    • Even with the positive cash flows he had from acquired business, he found success with going to a small bank as the large banks such as Chase and 5/3 bank declined them. Ricky readily points out that he had not established as much credit as he needed to and advises others looking to go into business to do that early on.
    • He has established a relationship with his banker at Wintrust, who has become somewhat of an advisor. Per Ricky, he advised him to get into the services business which makes Ricky’s business more bankable.
    • Key point of distinction – in consumer banking, the big names sometimes matter, but in business banking, having a partner is the key.

    Managing through Growth [14:15]

    • Started six years ago with four people, now they are at 250 employees.
    • Have grown from one state to business in six states, prime to enter the seventh and eighth.

Flexibility, Family and Doing What’s Right [17:00]

    Further expansion through technology [20:45]

    • The introduction of the Rozaroute which will enable his Rick and his team to 1) perform better walkthroughs 2) Create work-flows for each cleaning contract, creating the most efficient and consistent worker route for that job and 3) A community portal

Differentiating to change the industry [27:00]

The advice he would give his younger self [33:00]

    • Be proactive
    • Own your job

    Take-Away Items

    • Getting started: Balance jumping in and getting started versus getting stuck in a “preparation cycle”
    • Banking Partner: When searching for a loan, Ricky underscored directing your attention to smaller banks as you have stronger chances for both loan approval and establishing a working relationship.
    • Attitude: Ricky demonstrates and teaches a proactive, assertive, own-it attitude. It comes across in his managerial approach, as well as how he drives innovation (e.g. Rozaroute).

7: Three Keys on How to be a Business Owner with Kim Melia Sep 19, 2018
    Show notes

When you contemplate how to become a business owner, there are many things to consider from product to customer service and everything in-between. However, how do you know what you, as the potential business owner, need to focus on most to give you the best chances of success?

I link up with entrepreneur Kim Melia, whom with her partners have created a multi-million-dollar company. Now in business for over 20 years, Kim shares her journey, lessons and her THREE KEYS on how to be a business owner.

    Key Highlights

Giving people their life back through entrepreneurship [2:00]

How she is introduced to entrepreneurship? [ 7:15]

    Advice for new entrepreneurs [9:00]

    • Manage associations thoughtfully. Limit negative associations. Add positive associations, even if they are associations, such as audio learning tools, etc.
    • When opportunity knocks, it knocks just once. So, let that door open, when it does because it means that others believe you’re ready even if you don’t believe you are.
    • You are not born “with it.” No regrets and no Mulligans, grateful for all of the struggles. Leadership is developed over time and comes with the journey.
    • Be present, enjoy the journey as opposed to looking for the ”finish” line. Many times, people are focused on racing to the end and it is important to realize that the journey in and of itself is worthy of enjoyment.
