    Show notes

How can we become more Stoic in our lives as fathers and husbands if we haven't dealt with the memories, moments and emotions in our past that we are still plugged into? In this episode, I discuss the ways we can stop looking at these in the rearview mirror, face the things in our past leading to some of our negative and unhelpful emotions and behaviours, to move forward and be free ourselves to live more intentionally, more presently and more Stoically.

    Show notes

Jack Donovan has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Menhas sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Polish.

Donovan is an occasional speaker and often appears on podcasts to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives in the 21st Century.

To support his work, he hosts a new podcast titled Start the World

He lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he has constructed an “experimental pagan ritual space” called “Waldgang,” somewhere in the hinterlands.

During our conversation, we touch on many themes covered in Jack's writings as we delve into how we as fathers can become more complete and effective as men and how this impacts us in our roles as fathers, husbands and members of society.

DAD STOIC | 6 Stoic Steps to weather the storms. Mar 27, 2020
    Show notes

Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.

#43 | Dr. RUSSEL BARKLEY | What we need to know about raising kids with ADHD Mar 17, 2020
    Show notes

With so many polarising opinions out there about ADHD, it is difficult to sort fact from fiction when it comes to making the choices that are best for your child.

That is why I reached out to the author of Taking Charge of ADHD, Dr Russel Barkley who has over 40 years working in the field. Dr Barkley has written 32 books, 300 scientific papers and given over 800 talks all around the globe on the subject of ADHD. In our conversation today we start with Dr Barkley giving us a rundown of what ADHD is from a clinical and executive functioning perspective and the extent of its persistence in adulthood. He then debunks the myth surrounding the prevalence of ADHD in current society as opposed to the past and delves into what exactly is happening in the brain of a child with ADHD.

We also talk about the causes of ADHD and Dr Barkley gives us a stark reality check as he informs us about the alarming statistics concerning people with ADHD. We end off this fascinating and very informative discussion with Dr Barkley providing us with a few of the 12 guiding principles for raising children with ADHD from his new book.

For any parent, grandparent or teacher of an ADHD child, this is a must-listen episode, and with my own daughter recently diagnosed with ADHD, I know it was a great eye-opener and gave me a lot of food for thought. Now over to my conversation with Dr Barkley

DAD STOIC | Your Child, Discipline and YOU Mar 13, 2020
    Show notes

There is so much discussion about how we should discipline our children, and it is easy to see why some parents find this extremely challenging.

Often the focus gets put onto the behaviour of the child, which is unpredictable and constantly changing. As Stoics, the focus should be on what we can control and that means it should primarily be on ourselves and how we respond to bad behaviour and attitudes in our children, and NOT firmly placed on the behaviour of our children.

Having the ability to remain calm, present and intentional in the moments our children and teenagers are challenging, allows us to make wiser decisions on our responses on what consequences we decide on for our children.

Asking the right questions and reflecting on how we handled the situations of the day set us up to do this more effectively.
