MONDAY MEDITATIONS | STRONG THINKING - I CAN ALWAYS WORK ON MYSELF Jun 08, 2020
    Show notes

With all the chaos that arises in the world and one apparent crisis leading into another, it is important that we keep in mind that our first responsibility and most worthwhile use of energy and time is to work on ourselves first. ⁣

As fathers, husbands and leaders in our communities, it is very encouraging to know that we can always improve our self-control, gain more wisdom and show more resilience and courage no matter what is happening around of. ⁣

I believe at this juncture that realising this instead of getting swept up in the emotion and reactionary thought and behaviour of the moment is going to be key to making a positive difference and ensuring our homes are places of peace, contentment and joy.

JEFF PUTNAM | BUILDING A RUGGED LEGACY Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

Jeff Putnam is the married father of no less than 9 children! He is the author of "Setting Yourself on Fire", and Leading Your Wife: A Man's Guide to Becoming The Patriarch.” He is also the CEO of Rugged Legacy Grooming Company and the host of the Rugged Legacy Podcast.

Jeff is dedicated to the belief that we should be proud to be men and never ignore our responsibility to protect and provide for the ones we love.

During our conversation, among other things, Jeff and I discuss the role that manliness and masculine virtue and actions play in us being effective fathers and how we have innate drives that if not fulfilled and directed in a positive direction lead to all kinds of negative behaviours and problems if they are left untended and discouraged.

Jeff also shares about how this applies to how we raise boys and teaching them how to set their own standards by which to live by.

We also discuss how parents are tending towards helping their children avoid failure when really learning to fail and get back up again stronger and more resilient is in fact one of the greatest lessons we can teach them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and Jeff’s unique perspective. He also shares a discount code for 20 % off any product from Rugged Legacy Grooming towards the end of the show. Enjoy!

We also touch on the essence of success as a father, how every father faces challenges and how making comparisons with others can be detrimental to life satisfaction and enjoying our wins.

MONDAY MEDITATIONS | IS IT WORTH A SECOND THOUGHT? Taking control of negative habitual thought May 25, 2020
    Show notes

Is it worth a second thought? How many of the thoughts that arise in our minds are worth our precious time?

In this episode, I discuss becoming aware of 7 things we think and say to ourselves and often also to others, and how it is beneficial to choose to not let them find a home in our minds when they are not worth a second thought.

It is really powerful when we stop falling prey to these useless thoughts and instead focus on solutions and taking action.

ADAM SCHAFER | THE SUPERPOWER OF SELF AWARENESS May 20, 2020
    Show notes

Today I am fortunate to have Adam Schafer on the Dad Strong Podcast. Adam is one of the founding members of Mind Pump Media, who put out a Top 10 Podcast on fitness and wellness that has over a million listens each month in more than a hundred countries.

Adam and Mind Pump is dedicated to giving honest fitness and health information to cut through the bullshit of an industry plagued by charlatans nad people clambering for attention and putting the dollar above actually helping people.

Although Adam and I touch on fitness and the importance having a strong body plays in being an effective father, our conversation hinges largely around developing and exercising self- awareness and how this ability can be an underrated superpower in helping us be the husbands, fathers and men we are capable of being. I was really challenged by how intentional Adam and his wife have been about having a child and how they are going to raise little Max, and I know that you will leave this podcast reflecting on how you too can improve in Loving, Leading and building a legacy worthy of your family.

MONDAY MEDITATIONS | 6 STEPS TO STRONGER HABITUAL THOUGHTS May 18, 2020
    Show notes

"Such as are your habitual thoughts, such also will be the character of your mind; for the soul is dyed by the thoughts." - Marcus Aurelius

We've been discussing the various behaviours and routines we can physically put into action to develop the habits and rituals to build a strong framework for our lives. This can be challenging, but by far a more difficult thing to master is changing our habitual thought patterns and the way we react to stress, discomfort, criticism etc.

In this episode, we START on the journey by learning to uncover and discard the habitual thoughts that lead us down the well-worn paths create since we were children, and have now become our default responses to external forces we perceive as threatening.

Just like identifying and getting rid of unhelpful physical habits helps us to implement positive behaviours, so ridding ourselves of negative habitual thoughts leads to greater emotional well-being and resilience which then creates a feedback loop that results in Stronger Minds and Stronger Bodies and Stronger Character.

DAD STRONG PODCAST | 1 | LOVE, LEADERSHIP LEGACY - Srong Mind, Strong Body & Strong Heart May 13, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to The Dad Strong Podcast! Today we launch the DADSTRONG brand and podcast. With our new focus on Love, Leadership and Legacy and putting all the pieces of the puzzle together to find what makes a Dad Strong, we are confident that we have found a name we can stand behind 100 % and a brand that we and other fathers can trust and believe in.

In this episode, I introduce the new brand, slogan and the principals and values associated with being Dad Strong. I discuss the different areas of our lives that we need to develop into strengths - Strong Relationships, Strong Style, Strong Skills and more.

I end the show by reflecting on the last year running The Dad Syndicate and the top 10 lessons I learned during that time.

I look forward to getting to know more of you and getting together to start or continue to build the Strong Structures and Systems that will help you to thrive and be the most effective father, husband and man you can be.

DAD STOIC | FROM HABITS TO RITUALS: Adding quality to life May 11, 2020
    Show notes

“Were you to live three thousand years, or even a countless multiple of that, keep in mind that no one ever loses a life other than the one they are living, and no one ever lives a life other than the one they are losing." Marcus Aurelius

It is great to develop habits that help us become the fathers, husbands and men in general, that we are capable of being, but the same automaticity with which we eventually do these things, can make these actions empty and only stepping stones to something else. In fact, they are a part of our lives. Changing these behaviours from habits into rituals means becoming more present when doing them and appreciating them as important moments that also develop the same focus and intentionality in the other areas of our lives.

LARRY HANGNER | Getting the DAD EDGE on BODY, MIND and HEART May 06, 2020
    Show notes

Today my guest on the show is Larry Hagner. Larry is the founder of The Good Dad Project, the host of the Dad Edge Podcast and the leader of the online mastermind group the Dad Alliance. Larry has 4 boys and a marriage that goes from strength to strength. He is a student of fatherhood and started the Good Dad Project in order to learn to be the father his sons need and deserve. Larry and I have a great candid conversation about the importance health and fitness play in showing up as as a father, how men tend to be all or nothing when it comes to their endeavours and the way we can often self-sabotage when we encounter hurdles and difficulties, instead of pivoting and redirecting our time and energy. We also talk about how important it is to remain a student of fatherhood and life and to realise that although we make mistakes there are always so many daily wins and positives that we can be grateful for, and use to propel us forward to be the men, husbands and fathers we are capable of being.
