    Latest Episodes:
Community Over Competition with Katie Martin Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

One thing is abundantly clear when making connections in the medical aesthetics industry: building community is a pillar of a successful business. In this episode, Katie Martin is here to have a conversation about community over competition. Katie is a physician's assistant from California, as well as VP of Clinical Operations and Advanced Injector at Holden Timeless Beauty.

Collaborating can take place inside or outside the clinic itself. Within clinic settings, it's smart to play off other colleagues' or practitioners' strengths. That way, you can fill in each other's gaps and focus on what you're good at, thereby capitalizing on your own unique abilities. One person may be a visionary, while another may be more detail oriented. A thriving business needs both.

Refer to practitioners outside the clinic if you believe they can provide the best service your client is seeking. This will make for happy clients, and those clients will return to you for your services. Be an expert in your niche with the knowledge that holistic treatment is vitally important. It's always about removing the ego and focusing on getting your client the best outcome possible.

Behaving competitively toward other injectors will impact how your clients view your business and will attract negative energy. Avoid speaking poorly about products they have used or other injectors. Instead, discuss how to move forward. It's likely you will receive back the energy you put out.

Everyone deserves a seat at the table, and that's why it's important to support community over competition. Transform your life and the life of your patients. Focus on working together with your colleagues to create self-esteem from the inside out by providing the best client outcomes possible.

    Hindsight 2020: Lessons Learned for a Successful Business Do-Over May 29, 2023
    Show notes

One of the greatest gifts of entrepreneurship is hindsight. Hindsight is a tool to help you assess where you are now so you can make necessary changes and move forward. It's helpful to reflect on what could have been done differently to help yourself and also help others who may be earlier on in their business building journey.

When you are starting out, set your business up as if it will be huge regardless of how big you plan for it to be. It's much harder to go back and change standard operating procedures, key performance indicators, team member expectations, and especially payroll once the ball gets rolling. Setting the standard in the beginning will save you the headache of negotiating down the road.

Get into the nitty-gritty of your business plan. Going into detail with regards to legal structure, taxes, ownership structure, and expense tracking are not the most exciting parts of starting a business, but they are vital aspects. Take care of those important tasks in detail from the beginning to help the business run more efficiently from the start.

Remember, your reputation is how you make people feel. Medical aesthetics is a small industry, and there's a good chance you will run into the same people repeatedly. Develop positive relationships with colleagues, suppliers, partners, and customers. Invest in an identity that communicates your core values as a business so that these people know what to expect.

Be adaptable and flexible. Challenges that arise outside of your control will pop up. Find ways to creatively problem solve, and it will build up your resilience. Don't be afraid to shake things up. Lean into the harder aspects of entrepreneurship. It's never too late to make changes or start over.

Top 10 Ingredients to Look For in Skincare May 24, 2023
    Show notes

The skin is our body's largest organ, and what we put on our skin will ultimately determine its health. With the overwhelming amount of marketing and product availability in skin health products, most people don't know what to look for. Skincare is akin to tending a garden, requiring different tools for different jobs. There are 10 ingredients that play essential roles in tending to this garden.

Focus your skincare regime on one that is nourishing, regenerating, and rejuvenating. If you can learn the function and benefits of certain ingredients, you can make informed decisions. Products many brands have used or still use are outdated as more science emerges in the skincare field.

Understanding what ingredients like peptides, tranexamic acid, growth factors, and glycolic acid can do for your skin will guide you into finding what products are best suited to your skin. Whether you need help with hyperpigmentation, discoloration, signs of aging, or just want a brighter tone and more even texture, there is something out there for you.

It's important to also consider where those ingredients are sourced from, and even have a deeper understanding of some of the smaller chemical differences and how they can affect your skin in order to have the most effective regime possible. Knowing what form each ingredient comes from, and which one is best, will give you the best results possible.

Of course, recommendations for specific brands and specific products are provided. Many of the products do double or triple duty, containing two or more of these essential ingredients. You can also book a consultation at Beauty Culture Spa for in-person or virtual skincare to help you create a curated regimen for your unique skin.

Digging Deeper: Unleashing Freedom & Innovation in Business with Kaeli Lindholm May 22, 2023
    Show notes

The aesthetics sector is outpacing other sectors in growth, and women are driving this growth. Yet, women remain underrepresented in business. Today we welcome Kaeli Lindholm, CEO and founder of KLC consulting. Kaeli has a background in working with manufacturers of aesthetics, and she is passionate in helping women like herself who could have used the type of support she now offers when she first started out.

There is a new paradigm in the aesthetics industry, and success does not mean just high revenue anymore. Women entrepreneurs are driven by impact, building fruitful and supportive relationships, and job satisfaction. The way that women choose to operate their businesses in today's society is different from the past. Their excitement resonates in the service they provide, not simply the revenue they bring in.

This is where the concept of "disruptive philosophy" comes into play. It is the ability to think critically and creatively when problem solving, and to come up with new solutions to old problems. Growth is just doing more for the business, which has limits.

Scaling is increasing revenue without spending more time and energy. Being able to scale your business will give you a measure of success that constantly giving all your time and energy to the day-to-day never can.

Evolving your business requires evolving yourself. Having system management tools is important in order to scale, but what is even more vital is becoming the person who can take their business to the next level. The curiosity and desire to learn how to be a great leader is a great indicator that you are ready to take the plunge to set your business up to scale.

The Truth of Melasma - Innovative Technologies and Updates May 15, 2023
    Show notes

I really want to talk about melasma. When I came into medical dermatology, I was really unfamiliar with it. 10 years later, we know a little more about it as well as some treatment options. There was a patient we were treating at the first practice I worked at who had really bad melasma, and looking back, I can't believe what we were doing. I think a lot of people still don't know the best steps to take.

There's a genetic component that is causing people to be more susceptive to melasma, and it's been reported in 41-61% of patients in Brazil. Skin pigmentation really does follow an inheritance pattern. There's also an inflammation component that I don't think we were appreciating until recently.

We're now at the point where we can really look at melasma, accept that there's no cure, and determine the best treatment. First of all, sun protection is key, and it should be started early. You should use a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical one, as chemical sunscreens can actually flare parts of the melasma.

Hydroquinone is another topical treatment, and it interferes with the melasma genesis. It prohibits DNA/RNA synthesis that alters the formation of melasma. However, hydroquinone can cause some rebound pigmentation in the long-term. Azelaic is another good topical treatment, and it can be used during pregnancy whereas hydroquinone cannot.

There are also some oral treatments that need more research, but moving to in-office methods, chemical peels are fantastic. There are also people that will use IPL or BBL lasers, but I never would. It's not a solution, it's a bandaid. We certainly don't have all the answers for treating melasma right now, but some devices are really helping us find good solutions.

The Power of Authenticity - Strategic Partnerships with Amber Edwards May 03, 2023
    Show notes

A strategic partnership can move your business into a whole other stratosphere. To explain this further, we're talking to Amber Edwards today. She is the Global Head of Alastin Skincare, which is the fastest growing skincare brand and also has a commitment to innovation.

Amber shares how she is responsible for driving strategic growth, innovation, and assuring Alastin is known for the value they bring through their products. The most important responsibility for her today is global expansion and integration regarding strategic partnerships.

Alastin was acquired by Galderma at the end of 2021, giving Amber first-hand experience and insight into building prosperous business relationships. Amber believes in creating a synergistic fit with culture.

Strategic partnerships in the aesthetics industry offer some key benefits. When you come together and learn together, you can make your product or service better. You can also come up with creative solutions to each other's problems, as well as provide products and services to each other to work in a mutually beneficial way.

Amber believes there are some key qualities to look for when seeking out a partnership. Having aligned core values is an important foundation. Look for authenticity in their passion and enthusiasm. Respecting each other's company culture and how you each like to work will keep a partnership running smoothly, too. Be willing to take accountability when there are bumps in the road, and find a partner who will do the same. Authentic connection and communication lead to a symbiotic partnership, and these partnerships will help your business flourish.

Embracing Your Journey - Gratitude for Your Past and Embracing Your Future May 01, 2023
    Show notes

How would it change your life if you knew there were no aspects of your past that disqualify you from what you want in your future? This episode of Curated Beauty is all about learning to not just accept your past, but own it. If you own your past, you can own your future.

Realizing that your past is your most valuable asset will help you have gratitude for what you have experienced, no matter what that looks like. No one else on earth has your past, so no one else has your unique perspective. The circumstances we often consider to be our disqualifiers are actually what allow us to make impact and create change in the world.

"The Wheel of Life", created by Tony Robbins, is a powerful tool to gain insight into your life's fulfillment. This exercise allows you to compare the categories of fulfillment your life from a scale of 1-10, and see how balanced they are. A great wheel will be fairly equal.

What would it look like to have all categories at an 8, 9, or 10? This exercise helps you set goals and balance your life. It's helpful to revisit once or twice a year, or however often you feel is helpful. It will help you create awareness, and even have a positive influence on your relationships.

Your past does not equal your future. Your future is unknown, but you can become more intuitive about your future by living intentionally. Your past is unique, and so is your future.

How do you do what you do, and why? Knowing the answers to these questions will create a streamlined approach to all the interactions in your business.

Maximizing Your Time: A Productivity-Focused Conversation with a Time Management Coach Who Adds Missing Key Components Apr 17, 2023
    Show notes

Today we're welcoming our very first guest onto the podcast: Brad Telepo. Brad is a time management coach and is responsible for streamlining the inner workings of Beauty Culture. As your business grows, it's easy to get buried in the business, which Brad knows how to overcome.

If you started your business with time freedom in mind only to realize you have little time to do what you love, it's time to make a mindset shift. Your business needs to run well without you. Otherwise, you'll have little space to reflect on your business and water your creative ideas.

It all starts with setting up your business to be able to scale it. The right structure keeps you from imploding; being unable to handle the business you have or completely running out of steam. Despite this being a common belief, setting structure and creating a foundation in your business doesn't make it more rigid. It actually creates more freedom.

It can be tempting to hope that the technology you're using will help set the right systems in place. The truth is the platform matters much less than your own behavior. You need to have clear agreements in your business that make it leak-proof.

Getting team buy-in when it comes to systems and change starts with a conversation. Be clear on what the "why" is for the business and for the individual team member. You have to get out of your head and get your business set into a system you can trust.

Navigating the Growing Pains of Leadership with Emotional Intelligence Apr 12, 2023
    Show notes

The practice of aesthetic medicine is about more than just delivering a medical service. The answer is not always injecting Botox. There's a lot of body dysmorphic disorder in our world, and sometimes the treatment is to refer a client to someone that can help them more than we can.

Besides the use of emotional intelligence with clients, it's also a very important skill when interacting with our staff. Right now, my business is going through massive change that will ultimately benefit everyone on our team. However, the phase of transition doesn't feel good for everyone at the beginning. People that have been with me since day one might feel like their influence on the company isn't as important as it expands.

Because of the concerns from my team, I implemented a time management system. Additionally, we recently did a company values workshop to emphasize and maintain our core values as we grow.

Another thing I've done to combat this fear is to celebrate milestones and successes. It's really exciting to feel like we're making valuable contributions to the company's successes and wins, but also that individuals are recognized. There are a lot of challenges as you grow and expand. Recognize that you can fail as you're growing, but scaling is where you can replicate people that are so incredible.

Clarity in these times of growing pain has been so powerful. We're all leaders in many parts of our lives. Remember that you can lean into the change. Any time you meet resistance, what does that tell you?
