357 Holiday Inn Dec 08, 2023

Show notes

For the first of two holiday films this year, The Cine-Files goes back to 1942 and one of the classic musicals of the Golden Age. With incredible singing from Bing Crosby, fantastic dancing from Fred Astaire to the classic music of Irving Berlin, Holiday Inn does not disappoint.

However, it does contain one scene which almost takes away its status as a great film and that is the truly upsetting Black Face Sequence in the celebration of Lincoln's Birthday. Which you can feel free to skip.

Happy Holidays and welcome to the first of two very special Holiday movies on The Cine-Files. First up it's the 1942 classic Holiday Inn starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. This is a truly delightful movie with wonderful songs from Iriving Berlin, incredible dancing from Fred Astaire and the introduction of one of the most iconic songs of all time, White Christmas sung by Bing Crosby.

Warning: It also contains a truly problematic black face sequence which comes close to ruining an otherwise wonderful film.

356 JFK Part 4 Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

The final 45 minutes of the film and this entire episode focuses on the only trial ever brought to court on the murder of JFK. This sequence is a tour de force of acting, screenwriting and filmmaking technique. You might not agree with the conclusions made by Jim Garrison and director, Oliver Stone, but that doesn't make the final act of the movie any less thrilling.

355 JFK Part 3 Nov 24, 2023

Show notes

The problem with conspiracy theories is they can lead you down a rabbit hole and the JFK conspiracy might have more rabbit holes than any other conspiracy in American history. In this episode, Steve and John discuss MLK, RFK, Jimmy Hoffa, the CIA, FBI, NSA, Homeland Security, Watergate, 9/11 and the Black Panthers. That's a lot of conspiracies for one Cine-Files episode.

354 JFK Part 2 Nov 17, 2023

Show notes

John and Steve go through the looking glass with District Attorney Jim Garrison as he expands his investigation into the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Now you might believe that all of this conspiracy talk is BS and be 100% convinced that Oswald acted alone but that doesn't make this Oliver Stone masterpiece any less compelling.

In two weeks it will be 60 years since one of the most shattering moments in American history when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in the streets of Dallas. Even today there are few more complex, controversial or fundamentally, unknowable events than the Kennedy assassination and Oliver Stone's groundbreaking film is right at the center of that controversy. Needless to say, Steve and John dig very deep indeed into this powerful film.
