Ep. 286: The Pandemic is the First of Many Disasters That Will Change the World As We Know It May 21, 2020

Show notes

Mike Davis is a historian, political activist, and writer. He is the author of many books including City of Quartz, Buda's Wagon, and Planet of Slums. Davis has also written for The Nation and The New Statesman among other magazines and publications. Davis is also an editor of the New Left Review.

He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and the Lannan Literary Award.

Davis is also a Distinguished Emeritus Professor in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside.

Mike Davis warns that the pandemic is only the first in a series of disasters which will include food and fresh water shortages, loss of jobs to AI, robotics and other new technologies, global climate change, and growing income and wealth inequality which change the world as we know it.

Mike Davis also explains how if the Republicans lose control of the United States Congress, presidency, and other ruling bodies that there will likely be civil unrest as right-wing paramilitaries join together with White Americans en masse to fight a low intensity conflict modeled on the Jim Crow South's "massive resistance" against the civil rights movement.

And Professor Davis warns that the Republican Party in the Age of Trump may represent the single greatest threat to human civilization in the world today.

Chauncey DeVega explains how white right-wing terrorism is a very effective strategy in the Age of Trump. The most recent example: Trump's street thugs effectively intimidated the Michigan legislature to shut down for fear of violence in the form of fake pandemic "protests".

Chauncey also shares a story about the interesting and strange happenings in his neighborhood during the pandemic.

Ep. 285: From Donald Trump's Fake Pandemic "Protests" to a Second American Civil War May 12, 2020

David Neiwert is an investigative journalist based in Seattle and a contributing writer for the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is the author of numerous books including Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump, The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right, Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us, and Over the Cliff: How Obama's Election Drove the American Right Insane.

Neiwert explains how Trump's fake "anti-lockdown" "protests" are the latest iteration of the so-called Tea Party Movement which viciously harassed President Obama and laid the foundations for Donald Trump and his neo-fascist movement.

Neiwert warns that although many of the players in the right-wing Tea Party grift are the same as Trump's anti-pandemic public health "protests" they are now even more energized and dangerous because of the more prominent role now being played by white right-wing militias and terrorist groups in the Age of Trump.

He also decodes how the guns, Nazi insignia and other regalia -- and yes, the Hawaiian shirts being worn at Trump's fake protests in Michigan and across the country -- are threats of violence and a 2nd American civil war in the form of the "boogaloo".

Chauncey DeVega shares more examples of Donald Trump and his right-wing death cult's urgings that people should be willing to sacrifice their lives for "the economy". Chauncey also highlights how history may not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme as seen through how Trump's pandemic death cult sounds very similar to the eugenics program of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

And Chauncey DeVega continues to share public health advice about the pandemic. This week's alert: scientists and other researchers are warning that the vile disease can potentially be transmitted through sex. How? The pandemic may be hiding in men's testicles.

Ben Fountain is the author of the novel Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, winner of the National Book Critics' Circle Award and a finalist for the National Book Award. Fountain traveled across the country during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign in an effort to document that political and social disaster as it took place in real time. The result is his most recent book Beautiful Country Burn Again.

Fountain shares how he is trying to remain focused and grounded in these maddening and surreal days of the Trump Pandemic. He also explains that Trump is so powerful and alluring for his followers because the Great Leader is one of the greatest con men in American history. Ben Fountain warns that America will need a second Great Reconstruction if it is to have any hope of remaining a democracy after the damage done by the Trump regime.

Daryl Davis is an American R&B and blues musician, activist, author, actor, and bandleader. He is considered one of the best -- if not the best -- boogie-woogie piano players in the world. Daryl Davis has played with such legendary musicians as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, B. B. King, and Bruce Hornsby.

He is also the subject of the 2016 documentary Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America. Daryl Davis is also the author of the book Klan-destine Relationships: A Black Man's Odyssey in the Ku Klux Klan.

Daryl Davis explains how he decided to befriend Ku Klux Klan members and other white supremacists with the goal of getting them to disavow hatred, violence, and destruction.

Daryl Davis also shares what it is like to attend Ku Klux Klan hate rallies and the communication strategies he uses when speaking with and ultimately deradicalizing white supremacist terrorists. And of course, Daryl Davis reflects on the power of music and what it was like to perform with legends such as B.B. King, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Chauncey DeVega ponders why the photojournalist who took a picture of Donald Trump's zombie ghouls at a staged pro-pandemic anti-public health "rally" in Ohio appears to now regret that decision.

Sexton reflects on his childhood and life in Trumplandia and the power that Trump's cult holds over so many white right-wing so-called "Christians" – and why Trump's foot soldiers will do anything for the Great Leader including dying of the coronavirus.

Sexton also warns that crisis is an opportunity and that Donald Trump and his regime are likely going to use the coronavirus pandemic to cancel the 2020 election and remain in power indefinitely.

Jonathan Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry, and the director of the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

He is the author of several books, including Prozac on the Couch and The Protest Psychosis. His new book is Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America's Heartland.

Dr. Metzl explains how the novel coronavirus pandemic will further expose social inequality in America. He also shares what his contacts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have told him about their frustration and anger at not being allowed by the Trump regime to properly conduct research about the novel coronavirus.

Dr. Metzl is also deeply concerned that the partisanship of Donald Trump and his Republican Party will literally kill people in those states that refused the Medicaid expansion because of racist hostility to Barack Obama and the Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Metzl also shares his hope that the coronavirus pandemic will force the American people to unite and work together for mutual benefit across lines of politics, race, class and other identities.
