The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the debut study session on Mário Filho's 1947 The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer, translated to English by Jack A. Draper III. Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died the final week of 2022 at the age of 82. The only player to win 3 World Cup Championships and the "Athlete of the 20th Century" according to many White journalists and historians, Pelé is classified as black and was born in 1940, a measly 52 years after Brazil abolished formal enslavement of black people in 1888. Racists didn't even allow black people to play football/soccer in Brazil for many decades. We'll learn about the System of White Supremacy in South America and one of the greatest athletes of any sport. Listeners should be mindful that Brazil just endured riots and violent protests after a contentious presidential election. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Julie M. Stamm. With a doctorate in anatomy and neurobiology from the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Stamm conducted research at the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center and the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She's also a White Woman who was raised in rural Wisconsin in an area that may be a Racially Restricted Region (Sundown Town). She confessed to hearing Racist Jokes - even from her White family members - and sometimes chuckling. Much of the US kicked off the so-called new year with Monday Night Football's gridiron clash between the hosting Cincinnati Bengals and the visiting Buffalo Bills. 24-year-old Damar Hamlin was nearly killed on the field after a collision with the Bengals's Tee Higgins. Millions watched Hamlin receive nearly 10 minutes of CPR to get him "restarted." We'll use this tragedy to investigate the dangers of tackle football, especially for young children, in Dr. Stamm's 2021 publication, The Brain on Youth Sports: The Science, the Myths, and the Future. The text is intended for parents and youth coaches to better understand the risks of collision sports to the still-developing child brain. Dr. Stamm shared that there are reports that suggest black players are less informed about concussions/Brain Damage than their White counter-parts. We also discuss how the culture of tackle football (White culture?) contributes to obesity even while claiming to encourage exercise. During the weekly installment of NFL brain damage, a 24-year-old black male, Daran Hamlin, nearly died on the field after suffering a viscous collision with a black male player on the opposing team. Hamlin needed approximately 10 minutes of CPR and was resuscitated twice before being transported to a local trauma unit. He's now breathing on his own and expected recover. A listener wrote Gus ans asked about the use of the terms "equality" and "equity" while at work. Gus always think it's best to ask the White people in charge to explain what they mean when they use these terms. One can check the employee handbook for definitions as well. With these words - as well as the term "diversity" - non-white people can equate these terms with JUSTICE - meaning no one is mistreated. If challenged, one can retort: Does "equality" "equity" mean injustice? We'll also hear about the workplace experience of Wes Hall. He migrated to Canada as a teen, and talks about the numerous ways White Supremacy/Racism obstructed his career. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's In The Blink of an Eye. Abdul-Rauf, formerly known as Chris Jackson, is a retired NBA player who became infamous for not participating in the national anthem during the 1996 season. Abdul-Rauf was quickly ejected from the league and all but forgotten. In fact, White journalists found as many of Abdul-Rauf's black co-workers as possible to have them criticize how he responded to White Supremacy/Racism. Gus hopes that by studying Abdul-Rauf's tribulations, non-white people will better understand the importance of resisting the urge to criticize other Victims of Racism. Last week, Abdul-Rauf described his deepening Muslim faith which included making the pilgrimage to Mecca. Moving away from the niggerization process, Abdul-Rauf read as much as he could. Unfortunately, he tried to share books and constructive information with his Denver Nuggets teammates. This and his pre-game prayers riled up White management even before the anthem controversy. His name change wasn't popular either. We concluded with Abdul-Rauf constructing his dream house for he and his wife in Kiln, Mississippi. This is NFL legend Brett Favre's hometown. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Marques Travae. Although born in the US, Travae moved to Brazil and lived there for years. He's been back in the states for a little over a year. We've spoke with him about White Supremacy/Racism in South America a number of times over the years. Gus checked on his work following the death of beloved footballer Pelé. The 82-year-old soccer legend was honored all over the world - even while Whites acknowledged the Racism Pelé endured for the duration of his life. We'll discuss the response to his passing in Brazil and what non-white people around the world should know about this Victim of White Supremacy. We'll also discuss the new Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Former president Jair Bolsonaro skipped the normal transfer of power and drowned his misery in the Florida sunshine. Travae seems to think this new ruler does not represent an improvement and should not be a beacon of hope for black Brazilians. We'll also make time to discuss his recent report on "black male privilege in Brazil." The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Emily Flitter. A White Woman (Racist Suspect), New York Times journalist, Flitter covers banking and Wall Street in her highly acclaimed, well followed column. She began receiving individual reports about black people alleging mistreatment from White banking employees. Flitter launched an investigation into how the System of White Supremacy works in the area of economics. Her book, The White Wall: How Big Finance Bankrupts Black America, investigates the many ways that Whites financially rape and ruin black people. One of the key aspects of the book is how Whites deliberately withhold information from non-white people. Flitter presents this repeatedly and in a variety of different circumstances. White insurance appraisers have extraordinary discretion about which claims they pay, the criterion they use for determining payouts, and what information they divulge to the public. This often applies when black employees allege they are being mistreated by a financial institution. Private settlements frequently include non-disclosure agreements. In fact, Flitter documents how a number of companies begin destroying evidence before they initiate punitive action against black workers. Flitter, like most Whites, was very resistant to logically conclude and publicly acknowledge that she and other White people are more informed about White Supremacy/Racism. Approximately three dozen people died in the Buffalo and western New York region, while water pipes burst in Jackson, Mississippi leaving cold black residents dehydrated again. Here in Washington state, an electrical grid in Tacoma was attacked on Christmas day leaving thousands without power. This continues a string of attacks on power stations in states across the US - which is directly from Dr. William Pierce's The Turner Diaries. The sports world was stunned with news of the death of Brazilian soccer titan Pelé. The only person ever to win three World Cup championships, the South American legend died at the age of 82. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the final installment of Neutralizing Workplace Racism for the 2022 calendar year. We're eager to hear how non-white people navigated the holiday season at work. If you were forced to attend an office party or take part in a gift exchange, let us know how you minimized the damage. Congressman-elect George Santos (NY, Republican) faces charges that he lied about a number of accomplishments on his résumé. Although this garnered an extraordinary amount of attention this week, people classified as White lying about their work history and academic record is a widespread cultural practice. At least one listener thinks Santos may be classified as non-white. Jeffrey Epstein allegedly lied so that he could teach children at New York's Dalton school. Joe Gerace, former director of the Anchorage Health Department, resigned this summer after investigations revealed he lied about large portions of his résumé. Many more examples of this from people classified as White.
