Last week, Gus was intrigued by a Wall Street Journal investigation into the potential career costs of flaking on consuming alcohol with your co-workers. This week, the WSJ examines how to brag on yourself in the workplace. Gus thinks this is of particular interest to non-white workers because we are rarely praised or acknowledged for hard work and brilliant intellectual contributions. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the debut 8th study session on Mário Filho's 1947 The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer, translated to English by Jack A. Draper III. Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died near the end of 2022 at the age of 82. His transition along with the disgraceful hooliganism displayed when former President Jair Bolsonaro lost the presidency to Lula da Silva, motivated us to read this book. Most non-white people have not traveled to South America or studied Brazil, this seems like a great time to do some south-of-the-equator learning. Last week, we continued reading the chapter on the so called revolution of the black soccer player. But Filho writes more of the same. Black and non-white players being mistreated, restricted and definitely kept away from White girls. In a book that features practically no female characters, we heard about Balbina, a black female mammy figure with fat, black arms like chocolate candy, who made the best porridge imaginable for her manly, White footballers. Apparently, "aunt jemima" depictions of black females are beloved in early 20th century South America the same as current day US flapjack-eaters. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Gus T. dodged a "Code Blue" snow storm in Buffalo and fireballs on Main Street, which took the life of a firefighter, to make it back to Seattle, Washington. Gus left the pacific northwest to cover a mass shooting of black people, this week in Las Vegas, 27-year-old Hunter Holman was charged with plotting a Terrorist attack on black people. Holman was allegedly angry about losing his job. Most people did not hear about Mr. Holman since many were attuned to a South Carolina court room where White attorney Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his wife and son and sentenced to life in prison. The salacious affair will probably yield dozens of Netflix projects and Broadway musicals. Importantly, a quietly released report projected that White Supremacist attacks on US power stations will continue. Zandra Flemister, credited as the first black female hired by the US Secret Service, passed away this week at the age of 71. Gus T. is extra certain she faced a barrage of Racist abuse, and was probably sexually abused throughout her career in law enforcement. I could be wrong. Additionally, many outlets published lengthy reports on the widespread abuse of immigrant (non-white) children by an assortment of US companies. Non-white boys and girls as young as 12 and 13 are subjected to grueling, unsafe work conditions. We also heard an intriguing investigation from The Wall Street Journal about the culture of office parties. Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died near the end of 2022 at the age of 82. The only player to win 3 World Cup Championships and voted "Athlete of the 20th Century" according to many White journalists and historians, Pelé is classified as black and was born in 1940, a measly 52 years after Brazil abolished formal enslavement of black people in 1888. Racists didn't even allow black people to play football/soccer in Brazil for many decades. We'll learn about the System of White Supremacy in South America and one of the greatest athletes of any sport. The ugly violence and hooliganism following former President Jair Bolsonaro's electoral defeat is still being investigated while Brazil's ex-commander remains on sabbatical in Florida - prepping for spring break apparently. And we're reading this book in the middle of Carnival. Two weeks ago, the text detailed how black players were viewed with extreme suspicion. Such that Whites would go to their place of work to confirm their employment status. Filho details even more raucous parties, heavy drinking and staying out all night. Whites dress up as "ghosts" to scare and pull pranks on their non-white teammates. The C.O.W.S. this week recognized fourteen years of counter-racism broadcasting while still in Buffalo, New York. It's been mighty cold. In fact, they're still investigating the December 2022 blizzard where more than three dozen people died - many of them classified as black. As "black history month" 2023 concludes, we learned about some of historian Carter G. Woodson's raping White relatives. Woodson's pale descendants took precedent over recounting how he was nearly butchered "like beef" during the 1919 White Supremacist massacre in Washington, D.C. Live from Buffalo, New York, The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism. Even while researching the history of White Terrorism against black residents of west New York, abuse of black people at work remains a primary problem. Gus listened to Lee Pettigrew at the Frank Merriweather Library (which is one block from the east side TOPS). He was supposed to be discussing the history of WUFO - a black owned radio station. Somehow the conversation veered to black Buffalo Police officers' recent allegations of Racism from their White officers. There were similar accusations against fire departments and enforcement agencies across the US this week. In fact, just before this program aired live, Gus returned to Merriweather Library to hear Sheriff John Garcia discuss "diversity" in the Buffalo Sheriff's Office. In truth, the exchange was almost exclusively about the lack of black and non-white Sheriffs in Erie County. Sheriff Garcia maintained few black people take the exam to qualify for being a sheriff. Importantly, some in attendance pointed out the testing sights are not always located near potential applicants. There were also strong suspicions that White people do not make a sincere effort to recruit black workers. Renegade trekked across the continent to be in attendance for the sentencing of convicted Domestic Terrorist and White Supremacist Payton Gendron. Having already plead guilty for slaughtering 10 innocent black grocery shoppers, the White 19-year-old was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He might still be sentenced to death in the federal court. As Gus was flying into the empire state, he found out that Anthony Broadwater received a $5.5 million settlement from New York state for his wrongful imprisonment for allegedly raping a White Woman, Alice Sebold. Residents of East Palestine, Ohio continue to navigate the carnage a train wreck and the subsequent "controlled burn" of toxic chemicals. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism live from Buffalo, New York. Gus has spent three days in Buffalo - low-key hobnobbing with Mayor Brown. Out in Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Lucas (black male) was asked to discuss the local fire department's embarrassing record of workplace racism and so called sexism. Mayor Lucas challenged the tradition of hiring from the same local batch of White males for every job opening and then wondering why the Racist, unprofessional culture never changes. We also discuss Texas Governor Greg Abbott's staunch opposition to "diversity," "inclusion," and "equity" being discussed in the workplace. Gus has yet to see where the use of the three terms produces employment opportunities and/or increased salary for non-white workers. Last week we learned how a black male player's name, Gradim, was turned into a Racist insult for all black fútbol players. Gus T. noted a distinction between the way black players and non-white players with a White parent are described. The so-called "mulatto" players are labeled dandies who spent inordinate time on their hair and wardrobe. Filho describes how black players were assaulted by White players during the ball games, and Racist fans would cheer on the illegal, anti-black violence. Black players were not allowed to complain or retaliate. Gus observed that this book was originally published in 1947, which is the year Jackie Robinson would have heard the same admonition to refrain from retaliation.
