The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. James H. Madison. An emeritus professor of history at Indiana University, Dr. Madison has penned a number of books examining White Terrorist Violence and U.S. history. In 2001, he wrote Lynching in the Heartland: Race and Memory in America. This book investigates the 1930 lynching of Tom Shipp and Abe Smith - which produced one of the most widely reproduced lynching images. We'll examine his more recent work, The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland which tracks the stunning growth of the KKK in Indiana during the 20th century. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS After hundreds of arrests, a murdered enforcement official, and a brazen attack on White elected officials, the U.S. Senate failed to approve a commission to investigate the terrorist activities of January 6th, 2021. There's no way this inquiry would have been scuttled if this were a mob of black people. In San Jose, a White man, Samuel Cassidy, targeted his co-workers (many of them non-white), killing 9 people. Reports indicate, Cassidy used the pandemic shutdown to plan this gruesome attack. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism. For most of the past 12 months, Gus has emphasized being mindful about your environment and the startling increase in random, public violence. This week in San Jose, a White (Samuel James Cassidy) man orchestrated a well planned terrorist assault where 9 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority employees were killed. It appears that four of the victims may have been classified as non-white. Reports indicate that the White killer, who worked with the VTA for nearly a decade, allegedly told others that he "hated" work, and it seems he may have targeted specific coworkers. This is only weeks after a White, former FedEx employee, Brandon Hole, shot and killed several workers in Indiana. Gus submits it may be helpful to speak with your employer about workplace safety and potential signs of violence. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 13th study session on Jack Olsen's Last Man Standing: The Tragedy and Triumph of Geronimo Pratt. Olsen is a White man, and a prolific author. He wrote for Sport Illustrated during the turbulent 1960's, and penned a celebrated series examining black athletes and Racism. The magazine also credits Olsen with writing one of the best biographies on boxing icon and attempted counter-racist Muhammad Ali. Last week, Pratt's defense team finally secured an evidentiary hearing. They were concerned that being assigned to Orange County would mean another quit defeat. But Judge Everett W. Dickey surprised them with his "fairness." Stuart Hanlon and Pratt's White defense counsel briefly considered whether it would be best to boot Cochran from the team. They deliberated whether Whites would seek vengeance for the O.J. Also on the Capitol, the House of Representatives approved an investigation into the Terrorist attack on January 6th of this year. It's already anticipated this investigation will be rejected by the White-dominated Senate. In Washington state, educators announced that public schools in the state will no longer use SAT or ACT scores for enrollment. Dumping these standardized tests is ostensibly supposed to produce a more "inclusive" enrollment process. Closer to C.O.W.S. listeners, Dr. Ruby Lathon's father passed away this week. Our warmth and healing energy goes to Dr. Lathon, her siblings, her mother and family. Some businesses dropped mask requirements altogether for those who've been vaccinated. Some have stuck with masks and distancing policies for the time being. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 12th study session on Jack Olsen's Last Man Standing: The Tragedy and Triumph of Geronimo Pratt. Olsen is a White man, and a prolific author. He wrote for Sport Illustrated during the turbulent 1960's, and penned a celebrated series examining black athletes and Racism. Last week, saw the return of LA prosecuting attorney Gil Garcetti (who's son is now mayor of Los Angeles). We concluded the O.J. Simpson trial with Garcetti insisting the Juice was guilty and got away with murder. This energy greatly influenced the behavior and posturing of Garcetti and the entire district attorney's office. Cochran and the Dream Team triumphed at the end of 1995, Pratt supporters protested and drew attention to the ongoing injustice of the Pratt case. We were excited to speak with her again, but we were devastated to learn that her father suddenly passed away. Gus and The C.O.W.S. listening audience sends healing energy and condolences to Dr. Ruby, her mother, siblings and entire family. This tragedy again highlights the enormous number of loses and grief we've suffered through over the past year and half. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Sarah Jo Peterson, PhD, Dr. Tierra Billls, and Dr. Amanda Phillips de Lucas. An independent transportation consultant and author, Peterson explores the history of and development of the U.S. highway system. Peterson wrote the books The Transportation Research Board and Planning the Home Front. We'll discuss her more recent project which is a series of reports which examine the deliberate way Whites have used U.S. highways to obliterate areas where black people are allowed to live, work, and attempt to operate businesses. Dr. Bliss and Dr. de Lucas also wrote on this topic, addressing road construction and Racism in Minnesota and Maryland respectively. Dr. Bliss describes how this trauma is personal to her family, where members were displaced with the construction of highways in Michigan. They're have been massive reverberations from the Centers for Disease Control announced that fully vaccinated people don't need to mask or social distance.
