BS is a Team Sport | Branding a Podcast | Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly May 10, 2023

Show notes

We will make every possible effort to go deep, staying away from hackneyed talking points. If you hear one, call us out on it!

Let’s admit to all the lies we all swallow…. How the continuing thirst for click bait and fame has lowered our standards to previously unthinkable low levels of honesty. Wait, you think it’s only other people who are brainwashed?

Zip always looks on the bright side of life. After years of paying in, he’s finally costing Medicare real money. So cool!

Donald found liable for sexual assault that happened we’re not sure when, and ordered to pay millions. Are we starting to see enforcement of laws on the rich and powerful? Don’t bet too much on it. Look for a settlement while it’s on appeal. Billionaires only get speeding tickets.

If West Wing and Homeland had a baby it would be this new Netflix series called “The Diplomat”. It stars Keri Russell.

Lewis Black Interview Classic | Bob, Spike & Joe Apr 18, 2023

Show notes

Bob and Lisa host a support group of Esophageal Cancer survivors over for a five-day hangout. The group met on a Zoom chat about a year ago and have gotten close. Bob saw no need to check anyone’s pockets on departure.

Ever seen any Cirque du Soleil shows? Bob raves about ‘Michael Jackson One’ and how was a feast for the senses with the incredible surround sound and no-net acrobatics. Which leads to discussing Michael’s controversies and how the Vegas show made subtle reference through symbolism. Did MJ kinda get a pass?

After talking about the ‘KISW 90’s reunion’ that Joe attended & enjoyed seeing all the old faces.. The guys reminisce about Seattle’s grunge heyday in the early 90’s and talk about the current state of Seattle; homelessness, drug overdoses, graffiti, garbage and crime.

Joe teases he has something in common with Hollywood movie stars, which is the use of the diabetic drug, Ozempic, for weight loss. Hollywood discovered this and started using it off-label, leading to people paying thousands of dollars for it. Joe’s unsure of its effectiveness on him due to a high tolerance to drugs – and cuz.. eating – a lifelong habit that’s hard to break.

BSJ get some tips how to be better podcasters/hosts from an unlikely source.. the importance of accepting compliments graciously and expressing gratitude towards others. They touch on the difficulty of balancing listening and speaking when hosting a show and how this can sometimes cause hosts to come off as insensitive to compliments.

We re-spin a great clip o’yesteryear when Lewis Black ( @OfficialLewisBlack / https://www.lewisblack.com ) visited the studio. Black discusses his comedic style, which he describes as being an optimist who is let down by reality every day… his philosophy on socialism, his formal education in drama and Broadway plays.. one he wrote that never made to stage.

Joe visits family in Tucson. Southwest living is calling.

Comedian Kristin Key | Bob and Zip w/Ed Kelly Apr 13, 2023

Show notes

Comedian Kristin Key ( @KristinKeyComedy ) who has one of the nicest smiles in all of show biz. Her comedy is an uninhibited mix of edgy, joyful, a little dirty and always inclusive.

And she sings and plays guitar, but not like most comics (badly) Kristin has a beautiful voice and her original and parody songs will have you busting a gut. ????????????

Bob has had his first “snake sighting” on a desert hike, and just survived a week with the whole family, including granddaughters going to see Katy Perry’s broadway like Vegas residency.

Would you rather be naked in public for a month or give up your smartphone for the same length of time? Consider carefully.

Which show about terrible people is your favorite of all time, and why do you think it appeals to you?

Attorney Shawn Alexander talks about how goofy the relationship is between Disney and Florida.

Russell Brand Interview Classic | Joe’s PO’d | Bob, Spike & Joe Apr 04, 2023

Show notes

Russell Brand has been no stranger to controversy in media regarding his sex, drugs & rock & roll – marriage to Katy Perry, and his evermore right-leaning views on politics and social issues. We take you back to a younger, more predictable Brand (@RussellBrand) visiting The Bob Rivers Show to promote his movie, “Get Him to the Greek”.

Spike goes total fanboy and expertly matches Russell’s laser-sharp wit as he hilariously touches on past abuse, heroin vs. career, exploding fame, celeb life with Katy… micturition and ‘cats in jackets.’

Joe, that sweetheart of a man who doesn’t get his feathers ruffled too easily, has something troubling him more and more every day. And he is pissed off. Hear his passionate rant.

Trump – Keep Calm and Indict | Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly Mar 31, 2023

Show notes

Gee, anything interesting going on in the news? The Trump indictment is unfortunately just the oxygen that the media loves to devour. Bob puts forth the “Tinder, Kindling and Windbag” theory of why we are about to once again be deluged with all Trump all the time.

Bob notes the similarities between the WWE and the Christians and the Lions!

Which Game of Thrones character does Trump resemble most?

Bob confesses to being sucked into short clips of provocative questions. His Catholic guilt kicks in. Should there be an online confessional?

Starbucks, McDonalds, The Airlines, and Hotels are all ruining their loyalty programs with shrinkflation.

Bob gets some good news from the doctor during the show, he takes the call live.

Spotify’s AI DJ- Womp Womp | Comedian: Andrew Rivers | SVB Collapse- FR Mar 15, 2023

Show notes

A major announcement by Spotify that couldn’t be worse. Instead of giving real people access to the platform to be influencers and curators of music, they announce their new AI DJ. It is so bad, we mock it mercilessly. Can AI do that?

Bob Rivers, Zip Zipfel, and Ed Kelly… with special guests Spike O’Neill, Shawn Alexander, and Comedian; Andrew Rivers (@andrewjrivers).

The failure of Silicon Valley Bank could lead to contagion. No matter how much you hate seeing rich people bailed out, it has to happen. Blame the banks, blame the regulators, but don’t forget the Fed has been trying to “break” something by skyrocketing interest rates.

Shawn Alexander’s family owned banks made him quite familiar with this “game” that is played with real money.

Andrew Rivers has taken a 5 day break from Cannabis… which leads to a little frank father son dialogue about moderation and addiction. We’re just scratching the surface. Dad uses and has used Cannabis again for neuropathy, nausea, etc. That’s medical, but admittedly a gummy makes music sound incredible.

So what’s moderation? When do you cross the line and become a Stoner? I suspect part 2 of this discussion is coming next week.

Tyson Chicken is closing factories, because of low profit margins. We’re all worried this will affect our god given right to “cheap eats”.

Can you imagine Eminem doing a rap about cats? We’ll help you with that.

Tami Asars – Hiking The Continental Divide – Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly Mar 08, 2023

Show notes

Triple-Crown Hiker, Tami Asars, joins us as our special guest to share media, highlights and experiences while hiking the Continental Divide Trail…
(Great photos.. we see we need to work on our video-streaming ops)…

We remind all again that we’ll soon stop streaming to Facebook and stream exclusively to YouTube. (No hard feelings, Mark, but we ain’t feeling the love).

Zip, as are much of the public, is infatuated with the Murdaugh trial. Could the interest in the story be due to the potential for a Netflix series?

‘Dude- where’s my car?’ Spike’s got thoughts on some Ford patents, innovations and features we’ll probably see in cars/trucks in the very near-future.

Bob’s syrup-making friend was scrolling through short videos on his phone and showed a video of an alligator crawling through a wrought iron fence. Was cocaine-gator legit?

Though initially deciding not to see Bruce Springsteen in concert per the high ticket prices and the less-than impressive tv performances seen of late, Spike & co decided to go after all. He talks about the concert, Springsteen’s strong vocals, perfect backup harmonies, and his return to lead guitar playing…. The show includes seven encores, with the band leaving and returning for six of them. Bruce did a solo seventh/final encore. Spike says it’s the best Springsteen show he has ever seen.

Confused about Medicare? Other than the few younger folks who’ll stop play at this segment, does anyone fully grasp all the programs, provisions.. parts xyz? A certain Canadian is confused about USA’s Medicare. (Wait, what?)
