Latest Episodes:

Bob, Spike & Maura Gallucci | Bob Rivers Podcasts Jul 31, 2023

Show notes

Fun fact. When Maura Gallucci joined our radio show, the ratings took off and made us #1 with adults in Seattle.

If you were listening to the Bob Rivers Show in the 90’s and early 2000’s, you heard all the stories as our children became toddlers and teenagers. Back then the internet was a place where scientists texted each other using modems, and a naked picture might take a full minute to load on your desktop computer. We all had flip phones.

Bob, Spike and Maura spend this episode talking about our families in the present day! Bonus.

It took almost half the show before Spike mentioned politics. We manage to almost stay politics-free.

Bob & Andrew Rivers | Father-Son Cage Match! | Bob Rivers Podcasts Jul 25, 2023

Show notes

Bob and Son Andrew Rivers have a friendly father son spar. Not so much a cage match, I suppose. That phrase might be clickbait.

How do we navigate in a world where every individual with a smart phone believes they are (or maybe could or should be) a global celebrity?

Is the increasing power of tech titans causing a marked decline in human kindness? We know our information is bought and sold in unprecedented ways. Have we considered how much more we are being manipulated?

Since algorithms thrive on drama, and divisiveness is a bankable business model, what can a poor comedian or retired former broadcaster do to make the world a better place?

The conversation might not be for everyone, especially those of you who think you have all the right answers.

Always be teachable, otherwise you’re a part of a herd.

The only constant is change, yet the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Drew Lane | Bob Nomination to RHOF | Special Ed | Bob and Zip with Ed Kelly Jun 17, 2023

Show notes

Drew and Bob interview each other in this special edition of Bob and Zip w/Ed Kelly. In part, for the industry voters in the 2023 Radio Hall Of Fame. Read Bob’s Bio, at bobrivers.com (https://bobrivers.com)

Drew (https://www.youtube.com/@DrewandMikeShow) asks the follow up questions.

Yes, Bob was Nude in one of these fables. And the true story is publicly told here for the first time.

Yes, Bob and Zip were courted big time by major markets. Why Zip wouldn’t leave, and Bob, who is a huge fan of fellow nominee Charles Laquidera, may have benefitted from competitor WBCN trying to get the show moved away from Boston. Just hearsay, mind you… but at least 3 Infinity Radio stations (Infinity owned WBCN) came a calling.

Who is Drew Lane? Only one of the most successful morning show hosts in America. He was Bob’s successor at WAAF/Boston (former KISW sister station) His 23 year reign as the #1 morning show on WRIF Detroit never skipped a beat. It continues today with his daily podcast of The Drew and Mike Show.

We are all big fans of Drew. He shares his secrets of success. From starting in the business hoping not to be fired too quickly, to achieving market dominance.

So with 2 hosts and 2 sidekicks to pick on, Bob and Drew take turns interviewing each other, and comparing Zip and Ed stories… like the time Zip had a short vacation to the Betty Ford Clinic.

Just how did huge bands like Blue Oyster Cult and Collective Soul end up playing in Bob’s Garage? That and more true stories from Rock Radio’s Glory Days.

BJ Shea | Bob, Spike & Joe Jun 09, 2023

Show notes

BJ SHEA and Bob Rivers became friends at a Morning Show Boot Camp 30 years ago.

Despite being direct competitors on the radio, they coached and learned from each other the entire time. Bob taught BJ how not to get fired, and BJ taught Bob to let his tiny freak flag fly.

Plus there are some things from the past that BJ will have to delicately explain to his Daughter.

Anytime we get too technical about the ratings, or dealing with management, Joe will distract us with a good FOOD analogy.

Spike and BJ both talk about going from 2nd banana to hosting your own show.

And Andrew Rivers tells a joke that got him banned.

The Art of the Podcast | Behind the Scenes | Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly Jun 02, 2023

Show notes

Tonight we go deep on what kind of podcast we want to do. More intimate, honest and hopefully uplifting. Less current events. Not none, but less.

…Because these days a current event is stale in a day or two. And the ones that stay topical are aimed at the reptilian brain.

We reveal the author of the quote: A lie gets halfway around the world before “The Truth Gets Its Pants On”.

Bob and Zip, with Ed Kelly, Web Guru David Lee, and special guest Spike O’Neill take you backstage with some candid backstory on how we got here.

Bob has just finished a book that changed his life. The “War of Art” by Steve Pressfield. He’s on our guest wish list but you should just buy the book and read it.

Zip and Ed never married or had kids. Did they have more freedom? Bob and Spike try to make them cry. Ed comes close.

Charles Opperman – The Movie | Barefoot Bandit | Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly May 25, 2023

Show notes

A software veteran, pilot, and the ‘true story’ basis of a movie in development, Chuck Opperman has seen it all and is our special guest in this episode of The Truth Gets It’s Pants On. We dig with stories about the past, present, and future of technology.

AI is cute now. An interesting tool.

How are you using it?

Will it kill jobs?

Will it increase productivity?

Does it infringe on intellectual property?

Will we be overtaken by the Borg?

Is it too late or too difficult to regulate?

Your Teacher, Your Enemy | AI Wants Regulation | Bob & Zip w/Ed Kelly May 18, 2023

Show notes

A quote from Enders Game.

“There is no teacher but the enemy. No one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy is going to do. No one but the enemy will ever teach you how to destroy and conquer. Only the enemy show you where you are weak. Only the enemy shows you where he is strong. And the rules of the game are what you can do to him and what you can stop him from doing to you. – Mazer Rackham”

It’s similar to The Art of War. Think about what it means and how we can apply it in our modern lives.

Dr. John Medina had to say:

Wow. Interesting quote. Did you ever read “The Art of War”? Sun Tzu, written about the time the ancient Israelites were getting their butts kicked by the Assyrians. Favorite line:“If you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” Interesting to contrast this with you Rackham quote.

If you juxtapose those two philosophical quotes, you get the secret to success.

The Wall Street Journal. The conservative paper of record, just caved on immigration.

AI Wants to be regulated!!!

Why? And how will that go? Hmm I wonder if the laws will be written by lobbyists from the biggest tech companies?

90’s Seattle Bands/Music w/Cathy Faulkner | Bob, Spike & Joe May 11, 2023

Show notes

Interning at KISW, Cathy Faulkner was barely old enough to buy cigarettes. The day Nirvana released “Nevermind”, she became KISW Music Director. As Pearl Jam recorded “Ten”, Cathy had fallen asleep on the studio couch.
Bob Spike and Joe spend over an hour with Cathy on the “behind the scenes” curation of musicians, bands, on-air talent and how the ‘Seattle Sound’ came to be. A great conversation!

Spike is tearing it up these days on KIRO Mid Days with his sparring partner (and fast rising talent) Jack Stine.

And Downtown Joe is mentoring the Broadcasters of tomorrow at KMIH.

And none of this could have happened at all for any of us without YOU. Thanks for listening for all those years.
