Daily Bible Readings from the Christadelphian Reading Planner for 17th April Apr 16, 2020
    Show notes

A small group of young Christadelphian brothers have taken the time to produce this valuable resource for the brotherhood and beyond, they are using the Bible reading planner developed by Brother Robert Roberts called The Bible Companion. The Bible Companion (or Bible Reading Planner) is a guide developed by the Christadelphians to aid reading the Bible. It was first produced by Robert Roberts when he was just 14 years of age, in about 1853, and revised by him over a number of years into its current format.

Most Christadelphians use this plan each day and it was designed to help you read the old testament once and the new testament twice each year.

These readings which we feature are recorded using the KJV or the NKJV of the Bible and we hope will be helpful to those who may struggle with time or who have poor eyesight.

Thought for April 17th...'This is an amazing thing. (John 9 vs30)' Apr 16, 2020

“THIS IS AN AMAZING THING” April 17

Today’s chapters in John’s Gospel very graphically illustrate the impact Jesus was having on the people - and the jealousy this caused among their religious leaders. He heals a man who had been born blind, who had never been able to see. Utterly remarkable! The religious leaders tell this man to “give glory to God, saying, “we know this man (Jesus) is a sinner” [9 v.24] They cannot deny that an amazing miracle has occurred, but say, “We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”

The healed man answers them, “Why this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes” [v.29,30] Their anger boils over against the man as he persists in reasoning with them and telling them, “If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They end up telling him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?’ And they cast him out.” [v.33,34]

This made us think of the increasing blindness of so many today who keep on saying at every opportunity, indeed making opportunities, to declare there is NO god, there never was a Creator, everything that exists is the result of countless happenings of pure chance! “This is an amazing thing” - especially that people persist in this way of thinking!

Yet in one way we can understand why this is so – it is because the established churches, especially the R.C. church, are so hypocritical. In many ways they are similar to the religious people who surrounded Jesus.

Those who are willing to read God’s word for themselves – and to keep reading so that they get its full flavour and meaning – are conscious of the amazing message that unfolds and that becomes clearer the more they read. But sadly, as we read in John’s next chapter, there are others that hinder the message – Jesus says, “He who is a hired hand, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.” [v.12] Sadly this happened!

But scattered sheep can listen and, even today, hear “the good shepherd” through reading the words which he inspired his followers to remember and write down (see ch. 14 v.25-27). This means that true sheep, even in the 21st Century, can “hear” his voice by reading his words and those of his disciples and other of God’s prophets. If they feed on them every day they find the only true pasture in the wilderness of this world – and will come into the Promised Land.

Description: The sudden arrival of COV19 highlights how vulnerable our civilisation is. Political changes reaffirm the fulfilment of ancient Biblical prophecies. Nations are realigning and the Middle East is in turmoil. This all indicates we are approaching the time when God will intervene and restore harmony and peace. Nathan Lewis

"THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE" April 16

What did Jesus mean, “The Truth will set you free?” Free from what? The 8th chapter of John today contains aspects of the teachings of Jesus that we have to think around and put into context to get the correct meaning.

The critics of Jesus were usually those whose thought processes were mechanical. They thought they had him cornered, if he said the Mosaic law should be observed and that the woman should be stoned. They probably would have done so, or got others to, and then blamed Jesus before the Roman authorities - because the Jews had no right to put anyone to death. That is why they brought Jesus before Pilate as recorded in John 18 v.31.

If Jesus has said something different, they would have denounced him before the people for not upholding the law! His reaction confounded them. After he said, “Let him who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” [v.7], they slunk away from Jesus. No one was without sin among them.

Only Jesus was without sin - and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? She said, ‘No one Lord’ and Jesus said ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’” [v.10,11] Notice how she addresses Jesus as “Lord”! She saw him as far more than a “teacher” which is how the Jews addressed him.

Jesus speaks to all who come to him – in the same words as he spoke to the woman – whatever our failures have been, and the closer we come to “the light of the world” the more we are aware of those failures – but we also learn the truth of his words, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” [v.12] and all the “darkness” in our character will be obliterated, indeed Christ will then be “formed in you.” [Gal. 4 v.19]

Jesus went on to tell them, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” [v.31,32[ The key action on our part is to “abide” in the word of Jesus. John uses the Greek word for ‘abide’ more than 40 times in his gospel and the translators render it variously as ‘continue’, ‘dwell’ ‘remaining’ etc. Are you abiding in his word? Is the word ‘abiding’ in you? If the answer is ‘Yes’ – you have been set free!

Jesus made the point, “ … I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” – it has become part of their character. But “if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed” [v.36] He told the religious leaders: “…you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.” [v.37] May it have found a place in us – in you – or will soon do so. Remember Jesus said, “Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” [v.47] – and as we read – we “hear.”

The Temptation of Christ....and us. Apr 15, 2020
    Show notes

We often consider how Jesus was tempted in all points as we are, but have you ever thought about what might have been the most difficult temptation for Jesus? Perhaps there’s a clue in our reading today from John 6. In verse 15 it says, “Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.” Why do you think when the people finally recognized he was a king did he need time alone? He had just performed the amazing miracle of feeding five thousand people with five loaves and two fish and this was their reaction. What happens next is he begins to preach in a way that was hard for them to hear and understand. Trying to have them appreciate the spiritual food as well as the physical food. But his message was misunderstood by his own disciples and we find out the people went from wanting to make him their king in verse 66 – “After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.” – to their reaction to the difficult things he taught, like “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.” (v.56) which many of his disciples said, “is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”

    Thought for April 15th...'.Rivers of Living Water.....(John 7vs38)' Apr 14, 2020
    Show notes

“RIVERS OF LIVING WATER” April 15

A really challenging saying of Jesus is, “If anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” [John 7 v.37-38] Jesus is obviously NOT speaking of literal rivers. What does Jesus give people to drink?

We recall the conversation Jesus had with the Samaritan woman, when he said he could provide “living water” to drink – if the woman had asked for it! [John 4 v.10] What did he mean? How can “rivers of living water” flow from the human heart? This gospel of John is a rich source of nutrients for a thirsty mind!

We must ask ourselves: ‘Is my mind thirsty?’ Remember what Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount? “Blessed are those who hunger and thirstafter righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” [Matt.5v.6] To do that you have to recognise you have a hunger and a thirst of that nature. How do you recognise that?

Well, are you satisfied with the way you think, the things that occupy your mind? Do you go to bed at night thinking, that it had been a worthwhile day - spiritually?

It is sad that many people do not realize they are suffering from spiritual malnutrition. It is tragic that so many lives today are largely froth and bubble - the very opposite of “living water”.

John’s Gospel shows this “water” is related to “the spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive” [7 v.39]. Now it is obvious this refers to far more than the disciples being able to speak in other languages as happened on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2).

Paul wrote that “in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles, so that we might receivethe promised spirit through faith.” [Gal.3v.14] This is the wonder of spiritual fellowship with the divine [2 Cor.13 v.14]. Alongside this we must put the words of Hebrews 6 v.5 that those who experienced Holy Spirit power in those days had “tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come.”

Finally, in the Bible’s last message we have God on the throne saying, “To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, I will be his God and he will be my son … “ [Rev. 21 v.6-8]

How beyond imagining to have this as your heritage! Are you making progress in conquering (or overcoming) the polluted waters of this life? Are you thirsting for righteousness?
