SWITCHED ON COMMUNICATION Apr 18, 2020

    SWITCHED ON COMMUNICATION

As Christians, one of the things we rely on is our ability to communicate with God. We need to know that we can speak to him and that he will hear and respond to our prayers. So wouldn't it be a shock if God suddenly said, "I'm not listening to you any more." We like to think that God would never stop listening to us, but the wise man seems to say that it can happen. It's not God's fault, it's ours.

The wise man says, "If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable." (Prov 28:9) Communication is a two way process. God's law, his word, the Bible is the way he communicates with us. We can respond to him in prayer.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone when they never let you have your say, and don't listen even if you do get a chance to speak? We tend to switch off to people like that. God wants to be listened to too. He wants us to pay attention to what he tells us to do. The proverb could probably be rephrased: "If we turn a deaf ear to God, he will turn a deaf ear to us." He won't listen to us if we don't listen to him.

So what are we going to do about it? Listen to God and do what he tells us to do. If we want to have an effective prayer life then we need to make sure our lives are also effective when it comes to listening to God and living the way he wants us to live.

    INFLUENCE Apr 18, 2020
    Show notes

Brothers and sisters, friends and the people we work with can have a huge impact on the decisions we make in our lives. And as a friend we can have a big influence on the actions of our friends. It was a negative influence that kept Israel from entering the land. As the people were about to enter the land they said, "Where can we go? Our brothers have made us loose heart." By their description of the giants and huge fortified cities, 10 of the spies managed to discourage the Children of Israel so much that they were too terrified to attempt to enter the land.
Each of the spies had the power to use their words and the description of what they saw to either encourage Israel to enter the land or to discourage them. Most of them chose to be discouraging which resulted in the deaths of the whole nation over the next 40 years.
How do we speak to the people around us? Are our words an encouragement to them or do we cause them to loose heart? Just like the spies that went into the land, we have the power and the choice to choose either way. What we encourage our friends and brothers to do could have a life changing effect on them. Let's make sure that the effect is a positive one, encouraging people toward a life of obedience as we head into the promised land.

Words made Flesh. Apr 18, 2020

When we go through a major experience we tend to do some introspection. So, during this time of worldwide pandemic one of the things you may be thinking about is what it is we’re meant to be doing with our lives. There’s not a lot we can do at the moment, stuck in our homes, other than of course making daring trips to the grocery store armed with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. We’re thankful for the technology like Zoom which allows us to do the readings together and hold Bible classes. We Christadelphians do like our Bible study and it seems that we’re doing a lot of Bible classes during this time and doing a lot more Bible reading than we might be doing if we were able to be out and about. If that’s what we’re doing with our time, it’s a good thing, obviously. There’s nothing negative about more Bible classes, reading and meditation. But the question we then need to ask ourselves is what are we meant to be doing with this knowledge?

Daily Bible Readings from the Christadelphian Reading Planner for 18th April Apr 17, 2020
    Show notes

A small group of young Christadelphian brothers have taken the time to produce this valuable resource for the brotherhood and beyond, they are using the Bible reading planner developed by Brother Robert Roberts called The Bible Companion. The Bible Companion (or Bible Reading Planner) is a guide developed by the Christadelphians to aid reading the Bible. It was first produced by Robert Roberts when he was just 14 years of age, in about 1853, and revised by him over a number of years into its current format.

Most Christadelphians use this plan each day and it was designed to help you read the old testament once and the new testament twice each year.

These readings which we feature are recorded using the KJV or the NKJV of the Bible and we hope will be helpful to those who may struggle with time or who have poor eyesight.

Thought for April 18th...'So that you may believe. (John 11 vs15)' Apr 17, 2020

“THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE” April 18

Today’s 11th chapter in John’s Gospel has that wonderful account of the raising of Lazarus. The ministry of Jesus, covering about 3 ½ years, is now approaching its climax. The authorities are intensifying their efforts to arrest and kill him and Jesus and his disciples are staying out of Judea.

On getting news about Lazarus’ sickness Jesus waits 2 days longer before saying to the disciples, ““Let us go to Judea again’. The disciples said to him, ‘Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you and are you going there again?’’” [v.7,8] Jesus makes a strange answer, “If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world” [v.9] This world? This world is in spiritual darkness and the one who walks “in the night” says Jesus, “stumbles because the light is not in him” [v.10] Are you in danger of stumbling? Is the “light” inyou? What does Jesus mean? In ch. 12 we will read, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” [v.46] Remember also what we read in ch. 8 v.12

Jesus tells his disciples, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.. But let us go to him” [v.15] We then have the well-known account of the remarkable raising of Lazarus after he had been dead for 4 days; and, as a result, “many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.”[v.45] The Pharisees were told of this incredible miracle and the effect it had had; they became even more determined to put him to death – they saw his popularity as a threat that would “take away both our place and our nation.” [v.48]

Now consider, over the last 96 years a modern miracle has occurred. It is 96 years since Jerusalem and the land of Israel was delivered from the control of the Ottomans, the Muslims. 66 years ago the U.N. voted in favour of at least part of the Promised Land becoming a Jewish nation, but the U.N. had no powers to enforce their decision However, against overwhelming odds the Jews triumphed! It was the resurrection miracle of a nation, destroyed 1,878 years previously, which God’s word had foretold. (Luke 21 v.24; Romans 11 v.25)

This modern resurrection miracle has occurred as prophesied “that you may be believe” that is, those who read and really know God’s word. May you be among them? Do you really see “the light of the world” with the eyes of true faith? For as this world plunges into deeper darkness – only those with genuine faith will endure.

KEEPING THE INHERITANCE! Apr 17, 2020

    KEEPING THE INHERITANCE
The tribe of Manasseh had a potential problem with Zelophehad's daughters. If they were to marry outside their tribe, the inheritance they would receive from Zelophehad's estate would pass into the hands of other tribes, causing Manasseh's boundaries to be decreased. The heads of the clan Zelophehad belonged to were so concerned about this that the came to Moses wanting a solution from God for their problem. The solution they were given turned out to be an easy one. Zelophehad's daughters were to marry men from their own tribe. That way, their inheritance would not pass out of their tribe and into another.
But there is more at stake here than the inheritance of Zelophehad's daughters or anyone else's daughters from the tribes of Israel. Paul said that we should marry only in the Lord. (1Cor 7:39) Inheriting the promises God has given us is at risk if we marry a spouse who does not share the same faith as ours. Like the leaders of Zelophehad's clan, we must be very concerned if any of our young people look like they are going to throw away their inheritance in this way. It does not always happen, but the risks are huge.
So let's look at marriage outside the faith very seriously and do all we can to see that we are in a position to inherit what God has planned for us.

    OBEDIENCE! Apr 17, 2020
    Show notes

Sometimes situations arise when we are vexed by a question and we don’t know what to do. Often the answer is found in the word of God. At other times our situation is not covered by what is in the Bible and neither is it a matter of conscience. At those times we can either make a decision ourselves based on our own knowledge and understanding, or we can ask God for help in our decision making.

The tribe of Manasseh had one of these problems so they decided to ask the LORD through Moses for the solution. God gave the tribe the answer they came for concerning the daughters of Zelophehad. In many ways it could have been quite a harsh answer to their question. They were to marry only within their clan so that their inheritance would not pass out of the tribe in the year of Jubilee.

But what if there were no suitable men in their tribe? What if they were in love with someone from another tribe? We do not know what their personal circumstances were at the time, but we do know what the Bible says about them. "So Zelophehad’s daughters did as the LORD commanded Moses." (Num 36:10) Whether it was convenient or whether they wanted to or not, they did what the LORD commanded them to do.

Sometimes the answers we get are not always what we would like to hear, but even then, let us do as Zelophehad’s did, doing as the LORD commands us.

    NEVER SATISFIED! Apr 17, 2020
    Show notes

"Death and destruction are never satisfied and neither are the eyes of man." (Prov 27:20).
We are never satisfied in our wants and desires. No sooner have we bought a new appliance, then we need another different one.
If we have saved up for a car, we soon want a better one, something newer, more comfortable, bigger, more powerful, or a different colour.
We always want to taste new foods and, more often than not, load our plates up or come back and nibble more than we actually need.
Even with clothing many are never satisfied with the state of their wardrobe. An item might be worn, out of fashion, not look good on me anymore, or doesn't match anything else - so it needs replacing.
Particularly disturbing are addictions like pornography where the more you see, the more you crave, and the more sordid your appetite gets.
The wise man was right. Just as death and destruction keep on taking, taking, taking, so do our eyes and the desires of our hearts. Perhaps this is something God has built into us, and like all his gifts, we have a tendency to use it in the wrong way. Wouldn't it be great if, instead of using our insatiable desires for our own selfish ends, we had a craving for prayer, for drawing closer to God, to worship him, love him, and to share his love with others instead?

The Truth Will Set you Free! Thought for the day 16/4/2020 Apr 17, 2020
    Show notes

One of Jesus’ most profound teachings is found in today’s reading in John 8 – “the truth will set you free” (v.32). What do you think that means? Free from what? And what is the truth? It’s maybe easy to have a simplistic view that the truth Jesus is talking about is referring to having sound doctrine – assenting to a list of fundamental Bible teachings we call “The Truth”, is what will set us free. While sound doctrine is important, Jesus’ words go deeper than that. The people he was talking to were the equivalent of Christadelphians – people who would have claimed to “have the truth”, Bible students who had separated themselves from mainstream religion. But Jesus told them “you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you” (v.37). Seeking to kill the Son of God isn’t really the sort of healthy outcome you’d expect from having an intellectually sound understanding of Bible doctrine. The Jews Jesus talked to were still slaves to sin (v.34) and were about to manifest that slavery by crucifying him despite all the time spent deeply studying God’s law.
