It's the Thought that counts "The Second Coming of Christ? - April 19, 2020" Apr 20, 2020
    Show notes

The second coming of Christ will be a momentous event, far bigger than anything we’ve ever experienced. The world as we know it will come to an end, possibly comparable to this temporary pause in normality we’re currently experiencing. A friend of mine recently suggested that what we’re experiencing with the coronavirus pandemic could be a “practice run” for whatever God has in store for us before the return of our Lord. That idea is not without scriptural precedent. In our reading from Deuteronomy 2 the Israelites are right on the brink of crossing the Jordan and entering the Promised Land. Forty years have passed since the spies brought back their negative report and they started their wilderness wandering. The situation in the land hasn’t changed since then; it’s still as scary as it was before, full of giants. But what this new generation has just experienced is a practice run.....read more https://bibletruthandprophecy.com/its-the-thought-that-counts-the-second-coming-of-christ/

Thought for April 20th...'...and it was night. (John 13 vs30)' Apr 19, 2020
    Show notes

"AND IT WAS NIGHT" April 20

Our readings in the Gospel of John from today forward appear to be an almost verbatim account of conversations of Jesus with his disciples covering just a few hours. Ch. 13 tells us of our Lord washing his disciples feet – setting an example of serving one another – but it was not a command for regular foot washing as it would have just become a ritual. After this Jesus tells them, “one of you will betray me” [v.21] causing much heart searching – and that is not a bad thing! We all need to ask ourselves, ‘Am I letting Christ down in something I do?’

Jesus hands Judas a “morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.” [v.30] Darkness had fallen, it was probably about 7 pm. Today is spiritual night – the darkness is becoming really dark – are we taking regular morsels of God’s word? Or are we going out into the night? We should be constantly seeking the fellowship and strength of the faithful. But are the faithful themselves feeling the chill of the night and the darkness?

The end of ch. 13 tells us how Jesus said to Peter, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow tillyou have denied me three times.” So this is the final night of darkness in the mortal life of Jesus, by the time darkness comes again he will be dead. The next few chapters must be a largely verbatim account of what happened in the next few hours. Jesus tells them they are to receiver a ‘Helper’ “even the Spirit of truth … the Holy Spirit” [14 v.16,17,26] which, among other things, will enable you to “bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

John’s own gospel wonderfully illustrates this - from here to the end of ch. 17 are some of the most heart searching and challenging words in the whole of Scripture!

Ch. 18 tells us they then went to where there “was a garden which he and his disciples entered.” [v.1] The other Gospels tell us what happened in that garden and how the 3 disciples closest to him were nearby, but kept falling asleep. But not so Jesus! Imagine the intensity of his mind as that night progressed!!

In the middle of the night comes a “band of soldiers with lanterns, torches and weapons … “[18 v.3] There were still hours to go before the cock would crow three times! What a night that was – how the disciples were frightened out of their wits by it all.

It is night now! How are we coping? Peter who was so crushed in spirit by the events of that night was to later write of the night that confronts us. “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, and then the heavens (rulers) will pass away with a roar … the earth and the works that are done in it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness”

    Excuses, excuses! Apr 19, 2020

The Pharisees held some very strong views. They were leaders in the time of Jesus and held a great influence among the people and especially on their followers. One of the official Pharisee beliefs was that Jesus was not the Messiah because he performed miracles on the Sabbath and challenged the Pharisee's authority. But the teachings of Jesus made so much sense, especially as they were accompanied by so many amazing miracles that left no other explanation other than that Jesus was the Messiah, many of the Jewish leaders did believe. In fact, of all the Jewish leaders, it was the Pharisees that ended up being the most readily converted to Christianity after the resurrection. But here we read of a problem. "Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God."
Do we have the same thoughts they did? "I believe but ... I like doing this; I like it this way; I can't change; It would make life too difficult; I have family and possessions to think about ..."
Let's pray that God would move in our hearts to take away the excuses and give us strength so that we will truly say, "I believe!"

A WORK BEGUN BY GOD Apr 19, 2020

As Israel stood on the border of the territory of Sihon king of Heshbon, God said a very interesting thing to Moses. He said, "See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land." (Deut 2:31) In a work unseen by the children of Israel, God had begun the battle with Sihon king of Heshbon. God had put a spirit of terror and fear on Sihon and his people. Now it was up to Israel to conquer and possess the land. Having had God begin the work, Israel had a responsibility to go in and continue it. With God's help they would bring it to completion.
There are many events throughout Scripture that God began and his people had to continue. But it is not just in the lives of people long ago that God began to work. He has done the same in our lives too. Paul said to the Philippines, "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Phil 1:6) God has begun a good work in our lives. That does not mean that we just sit back and wait to see how we turn out. Like Israel, we need to take what God has started and begin to develop, conquer and possess our characters, doing our part in the work that was begun and will be completed by God.

WHAT TO SAY AND HOW TO SAY IT Apr 19, 2020
    Show notes

It's no wonder Jesus was able to say and do everything so well. I am always amazed at the way he had answers on the tip of his tongue for the trickiest questions, and how he was able to keep multitudes enthralled as he taught them for hours and even days on end.
Here is how he did it: He said, "For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it." (John 12:49). When you are told what to say and how to say it, how can you go wrong - especially if the instructions come from God himself?
I have turned the words of Jesus into a prayer that I pray, both in a general way for the conversations I have during the day, and also specifically for when I am teaching and speaking. I ask, "Lord, please teach me and help me to know what to say, and how to say it, so that those who hear will be blessed by it."
It is a prayer that I know God has answered. Why not try it in your life?
It doesn't mean I don't ever say anything wrong, but with God's blessing I hope I get more right than what I used to. Make it your prayer that God will teach you what to say, and how to say it.

It's the Thought that counts "Do we listen to God? - April 16, 2020" Apr 19, 2020
    Show notes

As we face the giants of our lives, the fear and anxiety of our present situation, the worry that we’re not ready for the Kingdom of God, the trials and temptations of life in general, we often go in prayer to God to guide us and protect us. God has given us the answers to our problems in the words he has caused to be written. If we’re listening to him, trusting that what he says is right for the situations we find ourselves in, then we can have the confidence to go up and fight against our giants. When we try to align our human thinking to God’s divine thinking by reading and studying his word, it’s then that our prayers will be heard, and God will fight for us.

Thought for April 19th...'The Word that i have spoken will judge him on the last day. (John 12 vs48)'_1 Apr 18, 2020
    Show notes

“THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN” April 19

What thought provoking chapters we continue to read in John’s Gospel! What point was Jesus making when he said, “If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him (or her); for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world” [12 v.47]

And so it is true that the rejection and crucifixion of Jesus was NOT followed by actions of divine judgment on the people and the nation. It seems remarkable that the time came when “a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith” [Acts 6 v.7] – this was some time after the urgent appeal for repentance at and following the day of Pentecost when some 3,000 were baptized.

But note the next words of Jesus in today’s chapter, “The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day” [v.48] A knowledge of God’s word as spoken by his son, inevitably causes a reaction in the minds of those who hear or read it, but for many, at first, it was a negative reaction – and today?

What is it to “receive” the words of Jesus? It is that they become part of you, of your thinking. Jesus expresses displeasure at those who say “Let me first go and …” – he then comments that no-one who “looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” [Luke 9 v.59-61]

Jesus warned his hearers that the time will come when “the master has risen and shut the door … you begin to stand outside … saying, ‘Open to us … we ate and drank in your presence and you taught in our streets … (but) there will be weeping when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.” [Luke 13 v.25-28] Will others say, ‘but we did sometimes read your word’?

Jesus continues, “people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.” Will you be among them? All those who had responded to “the word that I have spoken” – or who read that word and put it “first” in the priorities in their lives, having become conscious that their reaction to that word – in mind and deed – will be the basis of judgment “on the last day” – will surely be among them.

May we all be there! There is a hymn that ends, ‘We make the answer now.’
