BHP Shorts 048: The Power of Moments Oct 28, 2019
    Show notes

    “Seek more meaningful moments.”

That simple and powerful phrase is one of the (many) memorable lessons I pulled from a recent conversation with Dr. Russell Jaffe right here on the BHP.

Reflecting on that mantra recently, I was reminded of one of my favorite books I’ve read in the last few years: Chip and Dan Heath’s The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact.

If you’re interested in transcending average, mundane moments in your own life, or creating meaningful memories for clients, customers, or friends and loved ones, this book lays out the science and strategies behind the moments that elevate our lives and how we can create more of them.

Here are 6 big takeaways from The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath.

    1. Play Offense, not defense. Accentuate the positives. Build peaks, don’t fill potholes.
    2. Pass the “camera test”. Most moments in our lives can be classified as “mostly forgettable”. Be better than mostly forgettable. Will people want to remember this? Elevate the experience to the point where people will want to capture the memory on camera.
    3. Transitions need to be recognized – for ourselves and our clients, customers, and loved ones. Celebrate milestones, small victories, and find ways to integrate these developmental milestones.
    4. Disrupt scripts. Defy peoples expectations of how an experience will unfold.
    5. Nobody goes out for the basketball team if there are no games.
    6. Variety may be the spice of life, but nobody dines on pepper and oregano. Focus on the basics and don’t get caught up in variety for the sake of variety.

PRESS PLAY to tune in and go a bit deeper on each of these.

BHP Shorts 047: Elevating Our Social Circles Oct 24, 2019
    Show notes

"My tribe is weak. How do I elevate my social circles?"

A few weeks ago I got this question via email from a reader who was listening to F*ck Your Feelings on Audible. I get this question a lot - so I turned my response into this BHP Short: The people with whom we spend our time have a powerful influence on our values, choices, and behaviors.

These social circles and the beliefs and actions that they spawn are what dictate the trajectory of our lives.

So if you're looking for some ways to positively your social circles - and your life's path - today's BHP Short is FULL of some helpful strategies.

BHP Shorts 046: Aim Small Miss Small Oct 21, 2019
    Show notes

When practicing their putting, pro golfers often putt to tees in the ground instead of an actual hole.

Snipers pick a button on a shirt.

The best hunters pick a hair, not an area.

All three are utilizing the same strategy:

    Aim Small = Miss Small

If you've seen American Sniper, you may recognize this advice.

Turns out, this phrase is more than a catchy maxim.

Studies on shooters support it. I'll explain on the newest BHP Short, but it supports the notion that narrowing our focus tightens our groupings, making our misses/bad shots/mistakes smaller in magnitude.

Since you're reading this far, here's the takeaway: the more we narrow our focus, the greater our odds of success and the smaller our deviations.

Pick a target and get specific. Very specific.

Then, put in the hours of deep, focused work to improve and work towards mastery - whether it's sales, shooting, putting, cooking or any other skill.

Make training/preparation more difficult than the real thing.

Remember, we won't rise to our exceptions - we fall to the level of our training.

Or as Steven Pressfield so poignantly puts it:

"Amateurs do it until the get it right. Pros do it until they can't get it wrong."

BHP Shorts 045: Takeaways from Fueling Performance Oct 17, 2019
    Show notes

Two weeks ago, Steve Smith and I team taught a High Performance Practices seminar for the Fairfax County Police Department.

Steve, aka @fuelingperformance on the IG, has worked as the resident chef and nutritionist for the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, the NFL's Houston Texans, and the most elite operators in our nation's Special Force Operations.

For this seminar, we spent two eight-hour days working closely with SWAT officers, 911 dispatchers, Detectives, Patrol officers, police psychologists and more. Our mission was simple: provide tools to help these individuals become better humans and better performers.

Here are some of my takeaways from Steve's talk. PRESS PLAY for the details and lessons.

    • We can have success despite what we do (diet).
      • Lesson = evaluate actions/process
    • We want answers so badly, we'll take whatever is thrown at us.
    • Socially accepted disordered eating (south beach, Keto, paleo...)
      • Most work because they eliminate the BS
    • Eat real food. Be consistent. Don't eat like an asshole.
    • Beware the reductionist approach
    • In a carbohydrate restricted state, RPE is higher, in other words, everything feels harder.
    • We ALL have biases.
      • Be careful NOT to allow our biases to permeate what we teach. Present all sides - not just the one that supports our stance. (Confirming/disconfirming information.) At the very least, be open about them.

BHP Shorts 044: Enjoy When You Can. Endure When You Must. Oct 14, 2019
    Show notes

Life is a constant series of ups and downs.

One mantra that helps me accept and cope with these swings is this:

"Enjoy when you can. Endure when you must."

I first heard this advice from long-time T-nation writer, Chris Shugart who shared this phrase sometime around 2007 or 2008 but it dates back to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who left us quite a library of powerful quotes.

We all go through phases, cycles, whatever you want to call them… and this simple phrase has helped me get through some tough times - and get more enjoyment from the good times.

I talk a lot about awareness and how it creates choice.

This is another example of how awareness can help us, in these instances by being aware of the wave of life we're in/on - a cycle of enduring or enjoying.

These can be micro, macro, meta… the key is to realize that none of them are permanent. Good or bad, they will pass.

So if things are great, smile, soak it up and enjoy it. Recognize the blessing or fortune and express gratitude. Don't take it for granted.

If things suck, know it will pass and choose to see it as an opportunity to flex our fortitude and resilience.

Oh, and a note on the word endure, the base of endurance...

Endurance is defined as the ability to endure: Endure (verb) = to remain in existence, to last through possibly painful or difficult circumstances patiently; to persevere, to keep going.

What other option do we have? To quit? I'm not taking that route. Are you?
