    Show notes

Shawn Rafferty (@SafetyBlueprint) is here to show us how to avoid being victimized by harnessing the key principles of situational and observational awareness and making them a permanent part of our daily routine.
    The Cheat Sheet:
What's more important than knowing how to react to a confrontation?
Learning how to avoid danger is less of an investment of time and energy than learning how to fight -- and more likely to keep you alive.
What are the differences between situational and observational awareness?
Even though we statistically live during the safest time in human history, cultivating a natural awareness of potential threats pays off more than willful blindness when bad people mark you as an easy target.
Learn some tips for becoming a hard target.

    471: Matt Moore | The Gentleman's Kitchen Dec 21, 2015
    Show notes

Matt Moore (@HHOFD) is here to show you how to become a better version of yourself -- personally, in relationships, in friendships, and in business -- by cooking and sharing food with others.
    The Cheat Sheet:
If you aren't cooking, why aren't you cooking?
Among its benefits, cooking for yourself promotes self-sufficiency, good health, and creativity.
What is the number one goal of a chef at a restaurant?
Contrary to popular opinion, bacon is not the be-all, end-all of great foods. You can create something healthier and just as satisfying if you know how.
We often stress the importance of networking; cooking offers you a chance to be more social and generous.

470: Scott Harrison | Give up Your Birthday Dec 16, 2015
    Show notes

Scott Harrison (@scottharrison) has convinced more than 20,000 people to give up their birthday presents to raise money for people who need access to clean, safe water in developing countries. And in only nine years, charity: water has raised more than $200M from one million supporters. But his goals are far more ambitious...
    The Cheat Sheet:
While most Americans take access to clean water for granted, 663 million people (nearly 1 in 10 people in the world) live without it.
Without clean water, people suffer from countless health problems (like diseases, parasites, and tumors), a lack of education (especially teenage girls who have to take a week off of school every month for lack of washrooms), and a lack of income (especially women who have to spend hours every day traveling to gather it).
On a soul-searching trip to Africa, ex-club promoter Scott Harrison started charity: water to help bring clean water to these suffering millions -- because he witnessed firsthand what happens to people without it.
A six-year-old named Lory gave up his birthday presents one year, asking family and friends to donate $6 each, instead, to help build clean water projects. He raised $2,386. How much could you raise?
How did Scott start charity: water from his friend's couch while $30,000 in debt?
    And so much more...

    Show notes

The Art of Charm (@TheArtofCharm) presents this toolbox episode about networking and social capital basics that will give you an important leg up in your own relationship development skills!
    The Cheat Sheet:
Relationship development (and, by extension, the dreaded word 'networking') is the highest leverage point you can learn in business and your personal life.
How do you make real connections at so-called networking events -- and elsewhere?
Any opportunity that you have to meet someone becomes another gate to opening your network.
How can you add value to interactions with people as you're beginning to build your network -- even if you feel you have nothing to offer?
Avoid the pitfalls of agenda-based (inauthentic) networking and learn how to be authentic when making important connections that will last for years to come.

Fan Mail Friday #40 | Disastrous Toasts and Punctual Lurkers Dec 11, 2015
    Show notes

Welcome to Fan Mail Friday #40! No jibber-jabber, just a short show where we answer Art of Charm listener mail and give out mini-lessons for the weekend!
    In this episode:
In the 21st century, who pays for what and when in the world of (American) dating?
When is the right time to bring your serious significant other home to meet the family?
Does your relationship have what it takes to level up?
How does the responsible, punctual one stop feeling like a weird lurker while waiting for habitually tardy friends?
When traveling alone, how do you meet people -- of any gender -- while making it clear that you're not hitting on them?
How do you overcome the fear of giving a disastrous toast at a wedding?
If you have outdated or inaccurate programming in your brain, you simply can't interpret things differently until you rewire your programming. Jordan talks about it a bit in this short video.

468: Kabir Sehgal | The Darwin of Dollars Dec 09, 2015
    Show notes

Kabir Sehgal (@HiKabir) looks at biological, psychological, and external factors that help us make sense of how we interact with our dollars in his book Coined: the Rich Life of Money and How Its History Has Shaped Us.
    The Cheat Sheet:
What happens in your brain when you think about money? There's a science for that, and it's called neuroeconomics.
The anticipation of gaining money tends to provoke a stronger reaction than having money -- part of our survival wiring?
The way we deal with money is coded on a genetic level -- in fact, about 20 percent of your credit score is influenced by your genetics.
Why should you pay with cash if you're trying to save money (beyond the obvious reason of avoiding excessive interest payments)?
Why is the sun a good business barometer?

    The Cheat Sheet:

Whether by choice or what's already happening, your world will be disrupted by change. It's either an obstacle or an opportunity -- the choice is yours.
You don't have to be a brilliant inventor to solve today's problems; examine how existing systems can be modified and combined for new solutions.

You can hire expertise, but you can't hire persistence.
