Trigger, Feeling, Story, Behavior, Outcome Jan 10, 2021

Our human-ness is so endearing and predictable. . . . Also our ego is so good at doing its job, and it loves a good story. Especially a story that is familiar. . . . The problem is: once the story-lining starts and the behaviors kick in - it's a matter of time before we see a predictable outcome, even if we KNOW it's not what we actually want. . . . How the fuck does this happen? . . . It all makes sense when we start to learn our own Order of Operations which is typically churned out by our own internal default setting and vastly influenced by our unprocessed trauma. . . . It plays out as follows: . . . 1) Trigger: The internal or external factor that creates a somatic response in the body . . . 2) Feeling: The somatic emotion that begins in the body which does not contain language . . . 3) Story: The "meaning making" mechanism in the brain that puts language to the somatic emotion based on past experiences - with the intention of creating certainty . . . 4) Behavior: the adaptive actions taken by an individual . . . 5) Outcome: The end result . . . People that come to session confused and frustrated about continuing to get the same undesirable results are usually in this repetitive loop of repeating #1 through #5 over, and over, AND OVER. . . . But there's a way to disrupt this. . . . How do you do it?? . . . You pause and sit with #2. . . . Before the goddamn Story Train leaves the station. . . . Most of what gets people stuck in a repetitive pattern is NOT the circumstantial triggers that happen. . . . It's the attachment to the same, old, tired, played out, predictable story. . . . Which begets the same, old, predictable, played out behaviors. . . . Which produce the SAME BLOODY OUTCOMES. . . . Moral of the story. . . . Wanna change your life?? . . . Feel your shit. . . . And lose your story. . . . This will lead to changed behaviors. . . . Which will produce a better outcome.

"The Work" Jan 03, 2021

Happy New Year! After the 2020 we just endured, I figured that we needed to come back together consistently and so here we are.

I wanted to offer a quick update on where I am personally AND make a commitment to show up to the podcast each week where we can make some space for 'The Work' to kick off 2021.

To me, The Work means taking full responsibility for your life, looking under the hood and discovering who you are authentically. This includes activating your potential, healing your trauma and valuing both equally.

The Work influences everything in your life and spending time doing this Work will be evident in the gym, your body image, your career, your family all your relationships and how you show up in life's circumstances.

Today, we set the scence for the year to come and we map out the 9 truths of The Work at least from my perspective, haha!

The 9 Truths of The Work

1) Vulnerability is the price of admission

2) No one can do The Work for you, but you can't do it alone

3) You cannot read the label from inside the jar.

4) All your experiences and all of your relationships are reflecting back to you both evidence of your authentic self AND the places you need to heal.

5) Self Care while doing The Work is non-negotiable

6) Once you learn the truths of doing The Work you cannot un-know them

7) As you commit to doing The Work not everyone in your life will understand it or support it.

8) It's harder at first but it gets easier the longer you're committed to showing up to do The Work.

9) Doing The Work never stops.

Hustling vs. Aligning Mar 08, 2019

Hustling is such a buzz word for us. It's all about getting after it, getting it done, doing more, being busy, and pushing through. It's appropriate and necessary in lots of situations, but do we over value it? How often do we ask ourselves..."does this feel right?" "do I even like this person?" "do I like doing this?" etc. Alignment can sound pretty weird to us, especially these days. When I first heard it used to describe what it means to lean more into what feels right, or true I was like...'oh, ok...do I need some damn crystals to seal the deal on this shit or what?' but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that when I went for the hustle over the what felt right...it always lent to pain or getting off track. Hustling values being busy and doing more, where alignment places the value on what we know to be true and what feels right. It's an over simplified way of making the distinction between these two ways doing doing things, but once you really begin to assess where you tend to put your energy it can be a game changer. I hope with this bit perspective, it will give you pause to hustle less and align more. In today's episode we identify your "Dream Cockblockers" (I can't stop laughing about this word - it is the BEST.)

What's the 'tradish' definition of Cockblocking? Well, according to Wikipedia it goes like this: Cockblock is a slang term for an action, intentional or not, that serves to prevent someone from having Such behavior is often motivated by jealousy or competitiveness, although it is sometimes accidental or inadvertent. We use this analogy and apply it to your own dreams - not just trying to get laid. Where do dream cockblockers show up and what's the cost? How often do you cockblock yourself??

The Dream Snatching Quicksand of Analysis Paralysis Dec 14, 2018

Analysis paralysis describes a moment where over-analyzing or over-thinking a situation can cause it to become 'paralyzed', meaning that no action was taken therefore a solution is not reached. A situation may be deemed as too complicated and a decision is never made due to the fear that a potentially larger problem may arise. A person may desire a perfect solution but fear making a decision that could result in error, while on the way to a better solution. (Wikipedia) Sound familiar? Analysis Paralysis can take you down fast, and the scariest part is, if we don't find a way out of it...it could cost us our dream. In today's episode, we examine all of this and talk about the cost of it...and most importantly: a way the hell out of it. The only cure for Analysis Paralysis is action and when we take action there is always a risk that we'll be wrong, but as Seth Godin says: "Being wrong is worse than doing nothing." We talk about the steps to take action: 1) Your Outcome 2) Your Why 3) Your actions, and we talk about why Your Outcome drives all of it - not the "to do" list. By far the best book I've ever read on taking action for things like this is: "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. I read it at least twice a year. Too Much - a collaboration Oct 22, 2018

After the huge response from one of our most popular episodes, "Too-Muchness" I wanted to open up the platfrom to our listeners so that they could share their own stories. This collaboration blew me away. In a world where, as women, we are continually getting the underlying message to " be small" and adhere to a norm that has us being less than we could be, the "you're too much" trigger is one that I felt was really important to hghlight. When a woman is told what she's doing or how she's behaving is "too much" I believe it's part of a bigger systemic issue. Without "too-much" there are no new ideas, new conversations, or growth. There are just old ways of being, old patterns as well as pushed down feelings and potential. In this episode we explore all of that and with the help of our listener's contributions as well as the thoughts and experiences of our previous guests, we can see how insidious this seemingly benign phrase can be to a woman's spirit. From marriage, to family, to relationships at work and with other men and women, these stories help to illustrate the box this term puts us in and why it's time to stop tolerating it. Our job is to be who we are, and being "too-much" is a huge part of moving the collective needle forward. Look, my friends: I promise you it doesn't have to be so hard. You don't have to beat the shit out of yourself to make progress. I see people "hate fuck" exercise and diet stuff all the time, and I'll tell you: from the bottom of my heart- it doesn't work long term, and it's probably why you've struggled with it so much. I usually don't like to dealve too much into wellness stuff on the podcast, but I felt like it needed to be spoken to. The fitness industry monetizes the fact that 1) you don't know the science of what really works and 2) that you likely feel bad about yourself. Spoiler alert: the most effective fitness and diet protocol for you is the one you can stick to long term. Keto? Weight Watchers? Whole 30? Crossfit? Barre? HiiT, Kickboxing? Orange Theory? DOESN'T MATTER. Here's the bottom line: Be consistent, slow and steady wins it and make sure you LIFT WEIGHTS. You're welcome. You are not for everything and that’s OK. Talk to the people who can hear you. Don’t waste your precious time and gifts trying to convince them of your value, they won’t ever want what you’re selling. Don’t convince them to walk alongside you. You’ll be wasting both your time and theirs and will likely inflict unnecessary wounds, which will take precious time to heal. You are not for them and they are not for you; politely wave them on and continue along your way. Sharing your path with someone is a sacred gift; don’t cheapen it by rolling yours in the wrong direction" -Rebecca Campbell What's your value? Do you know? I met with Jason on a cold, drizzly early September day on Nantucket Island in a cozy upstairs office above one of his businesses, The Handlebar Cafe - right off of Main Street in the heart of town. We cover so much in this episode - from how he manages two businesses, a six-month old baby girl named Eloise, holding space for his marriage as well as his seat on the Nantucket Selectboard. We dig into how a devastating accident, which lead to a brain injury and subsequent brain damage, turned from a curse into one of his best blessings. We all have at least one. Maybe a few depending on our situations. "The Representative." The part of our personality that we "hire" to step in and take care of things when we don't feel brave enough to show up totally as ourselves. Some people would call it your ego or your "avatar" and I call it The Representative. Glennon Doyle speaks to it in her book, 'Love Warrior' also. This part of ourselves is there to control a situation or help us to feel safe and protected. It serves a purpose for sure, but how often is your Representaive running the show? The Comparison Complex Sep 15, 2018

Comparison is the thief of joy, right? So why do we engage with it so much? It causes pain and even worse moves us away from who we really are. We talk today about that and the difference between two types of motivation: Intrinsic and Extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the kind where you do something because it feels right to you and for you, where extrinsic motivation is when you do something based on something outside of yourself like acceptance, approval from others or monetarty gains. It's inherently obvious that comparsion is a big issue, but just because it's obvious doesn't mean that it's not important to highlight. We all have 'em the thing is, we often don't think about how much power they have over us and our lives. Your patterns can dictate so many elements of your life, from relationships to body shape to business. When people come to me for help in a weight loss goal, the first few questions that come up are: "What do I need to eat, and how many days a week should I work out?" Those things certainly will help with working towards an intended outcome, but the problem is that their patterns of behavior don't line up with the new diet and workout protocol. Dr. Andrew Kaufman - Can exercise be used to treat depression? Aug 20, 2018

In today's episode I sit down with forensic Psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Kaufman and we dig into his experience with the modern protocols that work to treat mental health and their effectiveness. He began his medical profession in a traditional sense at Duke University, but after helping patients suffering from clinical depression and treating them with standard protocols like anti- depressants, he came to understand by way his own experience and reseach that this system broken. He began to explore how exercise and diet could be used to treat certain types of mental illnesses like depression and worked to test their effectivness over time. The results were surprisingly profound. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Dr. Kaufman on a particular project where we combined a prescribed three day per week exercise program with his treatment philosophy. As a result, the participants of the program who suffered from chronic clinical depression experienced a nearly 100% remission rate.

One quote of Oprah's that live by is "You are responsible for the energy you bring in to the room" and as my man Tony Robbins often says, "you get what you tolerate." Caitlin Marcoux - The yoga teacher who battled cancer Jul 02, 2018

Caitlin Marcoux's resume on paper is beyond impressive. Se began her love with movement as a professional dancer. After suffering a knee injury from her dancing career, she began to test the waters of yoga where she found not only the benefits of the physical practice, but also the spiritual aspect. She carried on with her practice, and eventually became a teacher herself. Beyond the practice of yoga, Caitlin is also a cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2013 with invasive ductal carcinoma, where she underwent 31 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy as part of her treatment at age 36. During this time she also cared for her 3 year old son Griffin. Her story is incredible. Caitlin is a master yoga teacher, a wellness coach, a personal trainer and owns a successful stand up paddle boarding business on Nantucket.
