The Agile Brand with Greg Kihlström® | What CMOs Need to Know About Marketing Technology, AI & CX

Marketing technology, AI, and customer experience, explained by the people building it. Three times a week, Greg Kihlström interviews CMOs, product leaders, and martech executives from platform companies like Adobe, Braze, Qualtrics, Salesforce, and Optimizely, and brands like Marriott, Georgia-Pacific, Nestlé, and Zoom about what is actually working inside enterprise marketing organizations.

Each episode runs 20–30 minutes: one guest, one specific problem, no filler. Recent conversations cover what changes when AI agents enter the discovery and purchase path, how to move past traditional A/B testing with reinforcement learning, closing the AI capability gap inside marketing teams, and where personalization stops paying off.

Who it’s for: CMOs, VPs of marketing, martech and marketing operations leaders, and CX practitioners at enterprise brands and the platforms that serve them.

Greg Kihlström is an AI transformation advisor to leading brands, a martech futurist, a keynote speaker, and the author of over 25 books on marketing technology, including the Agile Brand Guide series. He has hosted The Agile Brand since 2019 — 900+ episodes, and highly rated across all podcast platforms.

New episodes drop at least three times a week. Follow the show so new episodes arrive automatically.

    Show notes

What if your most loyal customers are the ones you helped spend less?

Today we are here at PegaWorld 2025 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and we’re going to talk about how Telenet is transforming customer loyalty in a saturated market — not with discounts or gimmicks, but with ethical, AI-driven decisions that prioritize long-term value.

#688: Building a Customer Brain and how it benefits customers and the business with Christian Nelissen, National Australia Bank Jun 11, 2025
    Show notes

Agility at enterprise scale means building systems that not only make millions of micro-decisions, but also keep humans at the center — creating experiences that are timely, relevant, and respectful of the customer.
What if your data knew your customers better than your frontline employees — and used that insight to serve, not sell?

Today we are here at PegaWorld 2025 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and we’re going to talk about how National Australia Bank has built what they call a "Customer Brain" — a centralized, intelligent decisioning layer that unifies engagement across service, sales, and relationship-building at scale.

#687: Customer Experience Design using Generative AI, with Tara DeZao, Pega Jun 09, 2025
    Show notes

What if you could test drive your entire customer experience — before even writing a line of code?

Agility isn’t just about reacting fast — it’s about thinking ahead, designing deliberately, and testing before committing. In an age where customer expectations shift by the minute, businesses can’t afford to just “build and hope.”

Today we are here at PegaWorld 2025 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and we’re exploring how Generative AI-powered prototyping can help organizations visualize and refine the full customer journey before it’s built — and why tools like Pega’s Customer Engagement Blueprint are changing how brands think about strategy, customer-centricity, and innovation.
To walk us through this, I’d like to welcome back to the show Tara DeZao, Sr. Product Marketing Director at Pega.
    About Tara De Zao
Tara DeZao, Director of Product Marketing, AdTech and MarTech at Pega, is passionate about helping clients deliver better, more empathetic customer experiences backed by artificial intelligence. #686: Autonomous innovation using predictable AI agents with Peter van der Putten, Pega Jun 06, 2025
    Show notes

What if your agentic AI could innovate autonomously—and still follow your business rules?

Agility in the age of AI doesn't just mean speed. It means predictability, accountability, and the ability to innovate autonomously without businesses losing control of what is important, and what their customers value.

Today we are here at PegaWorld 2025 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and we’re going to talk about how enterprises are starting to move beyond prompt-based, freewheeling AI models and toward something more mature, governed, and scalable: Predictable AI Agents. And we’ll explore what that means for the future of autonomous enterprise decisioning and innovation.

To help me dig into this topic, I’d like to welcome Peter van der Putten, Director AI Lab and Lead Scientist at Pega.
    About Peter van der Putten
Peter van der Putten is assistant professor of AI, Leiden University and Director AI Lab at Pegasystems. Through his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Peter helps leading brands to become more ‘human’ by transforming into customer centric organizations.

    Show notes

If brand loyalty is so critical, why does it feel like most companies are treating it like an afterthought by propping it up with outdated programs and hoping customers won’t notice?

Agility requires a complete rethinking of how we approach customer loyalty — not as an afterthought at the end of the funnel, but as a core driver of long-term brand value and experience strategy.

Today, we’re going to talk about the evolution of customer loyalty and what brands need to do to keep up in a time when consumers have more choices, higher expectations, and less patience.

#681: Building a cohesive brand while personalizing every message with Emily Ward, Turnitin May 26, 2025
    Show notes

With AI as an accelerant, marketing is evolving at a breakneck pace, and brands are being challenged to maintain authenticity while scaling globally. How do you build a cohesive, authentic brand identity across diverse markets, cultures, and digital platforms—all while leveraging AI-driven personalization?

Joining me today is Emily Ward, VP of Global Marketing at Turnitin, a leading edtech brand focused on academic integrity and student success. Emily has spent more than 15 years in the education space, shaping marketing strategies for institutions under the Laureate Education network, leading global marketing at Anthology (formerly Blackboard), and now overseeing the global marketing strategy at Turnitin.

Emily Ward has spent more than 15 years focused on the education space, initially generating enrollments for a broad portfolio of global institutions under the Laureate Education network. She then moved to Blackboard, since acquired by Anthology, working with non-profit academic institutions to better understand how to leverage their marketing investment in order to positively impact enrollments and institutional growth.
Over time, Emily’s focus expanded to the larger concept of Student Success, helping academic leadership connect the dots of the full student experience from decision making through to matriculation and beyond. During the pandemic, Emily pivoted quickly to lead the launch of an official eCommerce platform, and was soon pulled in to lead North America then Global Marketing efforts for the newly formed EdTech giant Anthology.
Today, she oversees global marketing for Turnitin, an academic integrity company focused on supporting educators and empowering students around the world to do their best original work. Emily holds a B.S. from Towson University and an M.B.A from Loyola University Maryland. She resides near Washington, DC with her daughter.
