    Teekah Lewis

Teekah Lewis was a shy, two-year-old girl who was enjoying family fun at the local bowling alley. Everyone was laughing and spending time together, unaware of the drastic change about to consume their lives. Teekah was abducted in the blink of an eye. Witness testimonies that were buried under the growing pile of tips were finally brought to our attention 21 years later. The key to finding the perpetrator? Facial pockmarks. This is the missing person case of Teekah Lewis.

    Stephanie Crane

Stephanie Crane was an adventurous, 9-year-old girl who enjoyed exploring the outdoors and being active. She was meeting with friends at the local bowling alley to practice for their team, and all seemed to be going as planned. When Stephanie left, everyone expected her to make it home in a jiffy. Unfortunately, she would be a victim to abduction and has never been found. With continual strong leads, it seems like the police are close to catching the perpetrator. The only problem is the lack of evidence and that half of their suspects commit suicide. This is the missing person case of Stephanie Crane.

ABC - Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer / Philip Carlo Aug 07, 2020
    Show notes

Thank you for tuning back into the Abyss Book Club! We are talking about the true crime book Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer by Philip Carlo. We will discuss the wild life of Richard Kuklinski from his account of his life as a hitman.

    Synopsis from Amazon:

"Philip Carlo's The Ice Man spent over six weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Top Mob Hitman. Devoted Family Man. Doting Father. For thirty years, Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski led a shocking double life, becoming the most notorious professional assassin in American history while happily hosting neighborhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey.

Richard Kuklinski was Sammy the Bull Gravano's partner in the killing of Paul Castellano, then head of the Gambino crime family, at Sparks Steakhouse. Mob boss John Gotti hired him to torture and kill the neighbor who accidentally ran over his child. For an additional price, Kuklinski would make his victims suffer; he conducted this sadistic business with coldhearted intensity and shocking efficiency, never disappointing his customers. By his own estimate, he killed over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique.

This trail of murder lasted over thirty years and took Kuklinski all over America and to the far corners of the earth, Brazil, Africa, and Europe. Along the way, he married, had three children, and put them through Catholic school. His daughter's medical condition meant regular stays in children's hospitals, where Kuklinski was remembered, not as a gangster, but as an affectionate father, extremely kind to children. Each Christmas found the Kuklinski home festooned in colorful lights; each summer was a succession of block parties.

His family never suspected a thing."

    Case 30 - Tyler Hadley Jul 27, 2020
    Show notes

Tyler Hadley was a well mannered Boy Scout. Once he reached high school, however, he started acting out and sharing violent thoughts with his friends. They thought he just had a dark sense of humor but sometimes wondered if he was the kind of person to be watchful of. Although his parents tried to help him, Tyler kept getting into trouble. Then one night he threw a huge house party with drinking, games, and drugs abound. When partygoers asked where his parents were, Tyler responded with varying accounts. When he confides in his best friend about doing something bad, he is ultimately turned in. What caused Tyler Hadley to go from a well-mannered child to a murderer remains a mystery.

    Synopsis from Amazon:

“It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched.

The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing.

Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago.
Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.”

    Case 28 - Juan Rivera Jun 29, 2020
    Show notes

Juan Rivera was wrongfully convicted of the murder of 11-year-old Holly Staker when he was 20 years old. Despite obviously being in a compromised mental state and having no physical connection to the crime, police spent 4 days intensely. interrogating him until he finally told them what they wanted to hear. Based on this coerced confession, Juan was convicted three times. Each conviction was later overturned based on many inconsistencies and incidence of misconduct.

Wrongful convictions are pervasive in the United States. Many interrogation and investigative techniques lead to this. Wrongful convictions can come from coerced confessions, false eye witness testimony, evidence tampering, outdated forensic techniques, and police misconduct among other things. Well over 2000 prisoners have been exonerated since 1989. New DNA technology is helping to clear the names of innocent people but the work does not stop there.

There are many innocence projects across the US and Canada so be sure to check out the organizations in your communities fighting for justice for the wrongfully convicted!

    Summary from Amazon
"In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…"

Case 25 - Paul & Sarah Skiba, and Lorenzo Chivers May 18, 2020
    Show notes
