Case 38 - Antwerp Diamond Heist Nov 16, 2020

Show notes

Welcome back! This week we wanted to bring you something a little different so we are discussing the Antwerp Diamond Heist. This case is absolutely insane and definitely seems straight out of an action movie.

The Antwerp Diamond Heist is known as one of the largest diamond heists in history, with about $100 million worth of valuables stolen right out from under one of the most guarded diamond locations in the world. With the vault 2 stories underground and protected by 10 layers of security, any reasonably-minded person would consider this robbery daunting and impossible. Leonardo Notarbartolo and his group of criminals thought otherwise. They planned everything down to the T over the course of a few years. With the assistance of The Monster, The Genius, The King of Keys, and Speedy, Leonardo was able to fulfill his plan of robbing the Antwerp Diamond Center... and they almost got away with it, too.

Tells us what you think of this case and if we should cover more heists in the future!

ABC - Adnan's Story / Rabia Chaudry Nov 06, 2020

Show notes

"Serial only told part of the story…
In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listenersBut Serial did not tell the whole story.
In this compelling narrative, Rabia Chaudry presents new key evidence that she maintains dismantles the State's case: a potential new suspect, forensics indicating Hae was killed and kept somewhere for almost half a day, and documentation withheld by the State that destroys the cell phone evidence -- among many other points -- and she shows how fans of Serial joined a crowd-sourced investigation into a case riddled with errors and strange twists. Adnan's Story also shares Adnan’s life in prison, and weaves in his personal reflections, including never-before-seen letters. Chaudry, who is committed to exonerating Adnan, makes it clear that justice is yet to be achieved in this much examined case."

If you have been into true crime podcasts for awhile you have probably heard Serial. Serial rocketed true crime podcasts into the mainstream and brought much needed attention to Adnan Syed's case but it left a lot out. In Rabia's book, she covers a lot of information that has come out on this case during and since Serial. Despite the tremendous effort and mountain of evidence of misconduct and nefarious actions Adnan remains in prison.

Show notes

Hey listeners! We are bringing you a bit of a different episode today. Having both worked in the field of marine biology, we wanted to bring some light to a problem that is incredibly pervasive in the fishing industries. Women often face hardships breaking into scientific fields but that is escalated when they are in male-dominated situations and isolated. The more we talk about these issues the more we can figure out ways to make them a thing of the past!

Case 35 -The Colonial Parkway Murders Oct 05, 2020

Show notes

This week we are taking you to the historic and scenic Colonial Parkway in Virginia. Four couples were murdered along or near this parkway in the 1980s. Many more victims have been speculated as being killed by the same evil lurking the area. Lots of suspects came and went but these murders remain a mystery. Who do you think ended the lives of all of these people? Was a serial roaming southeastern Virginia or were multiple people to blame?

ABC - The Woman in the Window / AJ Fin Oct 02, 2020

Show notes

SPOILERS AHEAD!

"It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening . . .

"Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.

"Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

"What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems."

Hey listeners! This month we read Woman in the Window written by AJ Finn (although that is somewhat debatable). In any case, this was a good story and we had a lot of interesting cases associated with it! Enjoy! Tell us your thoughts!

Case 32 - Lauren McCluskey Aug 24, 2020

Show notes

Lauren McCluskey was a young University of Utah student in her prime. She was a gifted and dedicated athlete, a good student, a performer, and a caring friend and daughter. When she met Shaun Fields after a fun night out she could never have known the horror that awaited her. Shaun Fields was actually Melvin Rowland, a sex offender 16 years older than Lauren. Although Lauren and her friends tried to get help from the university and the police, Lauren was dismissed and faced a nightmare far too many women have to endure.
