Nick looks back at the one and only time Jay Leno hosted Saturday Night Live on February 22, 1986. At the time, Leno was still a rising stand-up comedian, years away from his Tonight Show fame, with a hot reputation and a career on the rise. Despite his popularity, Leno was underused on the episode, largely because he lacked skill in sketch comedy and acting. Instead, he spent most of the show either playing a stand-up comedian or taking on quiet background roles.

Nick takes a look back at the four times iconic and beloved actor Michael Keaton hosted Saturday Night Live, sharing behind-the-scenes stories and highlights from each appearance. Keaton first hosted in 1982 when he was still transitioning from being a stand-up comedian and had just gotten his big break in Ron Howard’s Night Shift. In this episode, you’ll hear his very first sketch ever (alongside Eddie Murphy, of course) and his first monologue from that show.

It took ten years for Keaton to return as host in 1992, and by then, his image had definitely evolved. The change in his persona was evident in both his monologue and his sketch work. Fast forward another 22 years to 2015—yes, a long wait—but it was well worth it, as Keaton’s work on that episode was absolutely terrific. By that time, Keaton had become a true Hollywood legend.

Nick looks back at the work of actor, writer, and director Buck Henry during the first five seasons of Saturday Night Live. Known for his sharp humor, Buck was always hilarious in sketches, delivered wonderfully meta monologues, and created recurring characters that stood toe-to-toe with anything the regular cast members could produce.

That Show – Please Come Back, Donald Glover Oct 16, 2024

The one and only time the multi-talented Donald Glover hosted *Saturday Night Live* was on May 5th, 2018, and it’s high time he returns to host again. The actor, writer, director, comedian, singer, and musician did an outstanding job, not just as the host but also as the musical guest, performing under his stage name, Childish Gambino.

This episode from Season 43 was a solid, often hilarious show packed with timely sketches, weird parodies, lots of music, and plenty of celebrity cameos, including Zoe Kravitz, Scarlett Johansson, Ben Stiller, Martin Short, and Stormy Daniels. Glover’s comedic range was on full display as he portrayed characters like Lando Calrissian, a slimy lawyer, a stalking rapper (in an insanely weird satire of the ’80s artist Oran “Juice” Jones), a guy who awkwardly requests dirty talk in the bedroom, and, in a surprisingly prescient sketch, an intern at Mattel who gives Barbie a disturbing backstory (perhaps Greta Gerwig was watching that night?).

Donald Glover’s brilliant work in this episode is proof that he needs to host *SNL* again, and soon. [Ep93]

That Show – Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger Oct 09, 2024

Nick takes a look back at the legendary Olympia Diner sketches from the early days of *Saturday Night Live*. These classics are known for their memorable characters, the bustling diner atmosphere, the functioning flattop grill (LIVE on stage!), and of course, the catchphrases like “Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger…no Coke, Pepsi…no fries, chips!” This popular recurring sketch was performed a record six times in less than 15 months, between January 1978 and May 1979.

Every member of The Not Ready For Prime-Time Players, along with hosts like Robert Klein, Buck Henry, Jill Clayburgh, and even The Rolling Stones, appeared in these iconic scenes. In this episode, you’ll hear three of the Olympia Diner bits (including the very first one) and learn about the somewhat conflicted history behind them. Cast member Punkie Johnson has announced her departure from “Saturday Night Live” after four seasons. In this episode, Nick reflects on her time on the show, highlighting some of her most memorable moments and discussing her comedy career—past, present, and future. The episode features hilarious segments, mostly from Weekend Update, where Punkie did some of her best work.

Nick looks back once again at the work of the best cast member in the history of “Saturday Night Live,” Phil Hartman. While Hartman’s best-known work—like his great impressions of Bill Clinton and Frank Sinatra, and unforgettable characters like Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer and The Anal-Retentive Chef—is always talked about and shared, this time Nick showcases four of his more obscure sketches.

“Robot Repair” features Hartman as a robot obsessed with syntax. “Only in New York” stars Hartman and Nora Dunn as a married pair of gossip reporters. That Show – Nader’s Raiders on SNL Jul 31, 2024

In this episode, Nick looks back at the night that consumer advocate, author, attorney, and future presidential candidate Ralph Nader hosted “Saturday Night Live.” It was a notable show, not just for Nader’s appearance, but because it was a night of many firsts.

It marked the debut of cast member Bill Murray, who made an incredible impression right from the start with fresh characters, funny writing, and hilarious performances. This episode also featured the very first “Coneheads” sketch, with Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman portraying the alien family “from France.” Additionally, it was the first episode where the legendary Jim Downey appeared as a writer.

Nick delves into the backstory behind the episode, explaining why Nader was chosen as host, and shares many of the great “first moments,” hilarious sketches, and more—including a phone call from an injured John Belushi, who did not appear elsewhere in the episode. Nader did a fine job (playing himself in almost every sketch he appeared in), the writing was strong, and the Not Ready For Primetime Players were rock stars at that point. That Show – Dave Attell On SNL?? Jul 17, 2024

Dave Attell is one of the best and most influential stand-up comedians of the past three decades. His uproarious nightclub shows, brilliant TV specials, guest appearances on talk shows, regular spots on “The Daily Show,” and his groundbreaking and hilarious show “Insomniac with Dave Attell,” have cemented his reputation as a comedy legend, especially in New York. However, his stint on “Saturday Night Live” was short-lived and rather unmemorable.

Attell was hired as a writer and background performer after Lorne Michaels saw his very first network television appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman” (which you will hear in this episode). Despite his talent, SNL and Dave Attell never really meshed. In this episode, you’ll hear the background stories of why SNL didn’t work for Attell, how his stand-up was completely different from his work on the show, and you’ll listen to sketches and jokes he wrote during his tenure. Sometimes, even the best comic minds don’t fit into the world of “Saturday Night Live,” and that’s certainly the case here. [Ep80]

That Show – The Malcolm McDowell Tragedy Jul 10, 2024

On November 22nd, 1980, actor Malcolm McDowell hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and to put it kindly, it was a disaster. The episode started with a lousy Cold Open, followed by an uninspired monologue (which you will hear), a brutal bit involving an S&M “Leather Weather” report, many sight gags that bombed HARD, and a sketch featuring McDowell and Gilbert Gottfried in drag. To top it off, the talent-free Charles Rocket appeared as a stripping/flashing Prince Charles. These elements combined to create what many consider the worst SNL episode of all time—a claim that is arguable but the episode remains a train-wreck of biblical proportions.

It all culminates in one of the most offensive, least funny, and ill-timed sketches ever aired on the show: “Commie Hunting Season.” In this sketch, not only is the “n” word freely used by cast member Rocket, but murder, mayhem, and shock value are emphasized instead of satire. You will hear this jaw-droppingly awful sketch in its entirety, learn how it got on air (and BOMBED to a deadly silent crowd), and how it, along with two other horrible sketches, contributed to this nightmare.

This episode marked the first chink in Executive Producer Jean Doumanian’s armor, eventually leading to her inevitable firing. While many painfully unfunny sketches exist in SNL history, could this be the worst? You be the judge. [Ep79]

That Show – Colonel Angus Jul 03, 2024

Nick takes a hilarious look back at one of the funniest (and dumbest) sketches in SNL history: “Colonel Angus.” Written by Tina Fey and featuring the weird and hilarious Christopher Walken as the Colonel, this crude, one-joke piece revolves around making as many sexual references as possible connected to the main character’s name, filled with nudge-nudge gags for about five minutes straight. The result is a classic, riotous, and often-quoted sketch that has lasted far longer than anyone (especially Fey) ever anticipated.

In this episode, you’ll hear all about the writing and background of the sketch, the immediate response, and how it played that night. “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” was a major influence on the early days of “Saturday Night Live.” As Monty Python gained huge popularity in America, SNL was also making its mark. In this episode, Nick looks back at the time Michael Palin and John Cleese appeared on SNL in 1997—and absolutely bombed. They not only bombed, but they did so while performing one of Python’s most beloved and hilarious sketches: “The Dead Parrot.”

Nick provides a complete history of the “Dead Parrot” sketch and details all the appearances Monty Python members have made on SNL, featuring many audio clips. That Show – Live from New York, It’s The Eddie Murphy Show! Jun 05, 2024

On Saturday, December 11, 1982, actor Nick Nolte was supposed to be the host of “Saturday night Live,” but (for unexplained, and possibly booze related reasons) he was a no-show. Instead, for the first – and only – time, a current cast member stepped in as host, and it was: Eddie Murphy. In this episode of “THAT SHOW…”, Nick looks back at that infamous SNL in which Murphy stepped in for his “48Hrs” co-star to host. He did the Cold Open alone, had a snappy monologue, and killed in sketches, but he caused tension between the rest of the understandably frustrated cast members, and confused many of the viewers. Nick will analyze and take you through the entire episode from top to bottom. It features funny work from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mary Gross, Joe Piscopo, and, of course, Murphy, but it also features not so funny sketches about Herpes Simplex 2, Rubiks Cube Hand-Grenades, and a wacky dance theater for the blind. Eddie Murphy was only 21 years old, had a hit movie & comedy album, and was on top of the world, but this desperate gimmick ultimately did not sit well with most people, especially since he introduced the episode with the sentence: “Live from New York, it’s The Eddie Murphy Show! That Show – Underrated Characters May 29, 2024

Nick looks back at some of the most memorable characters in “Saturday Night Live” history that never took really off and became as legendary as they should have. The outrageous ESPN commentators Pete Twinkle and Greg Stink (played by Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte) are featured here, along with Lilith-Fair standup comedian/singer Cinder Calhoun (portrayed by the great Ana Gasteyer), novelty toy creators the Minkmans (Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest) and finally, the shady lawyer Nathan Thurm (a brilliant Martin Short). Breaking character and laughing during a sketch on “Saturday Night Live” used to be frowned upon back in the day, but over the years, performers cracking up and losing it on stage, has become a thing that audiences love, and that Lorne Michaels more than tolerates. In this episode, Nick plays back some classic examples of “breaking” during sketches, and gives you the background of each sketch, and the story behind the comedic disruptions that occurred. From one of the first examples (way back in 1976, featuring Candice Bergen and Gilda Radner), to a now legendary example from just a few weeks ago (involving Heidi Gardner and a couple of characters who look like Beavis and Butthead), people losing it on the stage in Sudio 8H is not uncommon, and you will hear all about 5 classic bits. That Show – Uncle Miltie Hosts SNL! May 15, 2024

Nick looks back, analyzes, tells some secret stories, and plays back a good portion of one of the most notorious episodes in the history of “Saturday Night Live.” It’s the night that “Mr. Television Himself” (as he insisted on being introduced that evening) Milton Berle hosted the show, and the results were altogether insane. While SNL, at that point, was firing on all cylinders (t was the spring of 1979 and the show had reached legendary status by then) and the episode had some great segments (which you will hear), Berle’s antics during the show (and especially during writing week, rehearsals, and Dress) eventually got him banned for life from Studio 8H. You will learn why he was asked to host in the first place (NOT Lorne’s idea), what happened behind-the-scenes (including Uncle Miltie happily showing everyone the “anaconda” in his pants), how he paid audience members to give him a standing ovation during his closing number, and, in general, how an old-school, vaudevillian ham/joke stealer, got away with some of the most inappropriate, awkward, out-of-touch, and racist material ever performed on SNL. While many of the jokes are wildly offensive, there is a certain nostalgic charm to Berle’s appearance, and it’s a shocking example of how times completely changed in a 20-year time span. [Ep71]

That Show – A Song For Daddy Mar 20, 2024

Sometimes sketches bomb so badly that they never make it to air. In this episode of “That Show…”, we look back at a supremely weird sketch called: “A Song For Daddy,” that is widely considered to be one of the biggest trainwrecks in the history of SNL. The components were all there: a completely absurd premise; an inexperienced, unfunny host who was a total pain in the ass to deal with (Justin Bieber); the wrong props that didn’t work; lighting and sound cues that were missed; a piece of the set that fell and almost killed the host; the audience being filled with loud prepubescent girls with ‘Bieber Fever’ (who definitely didn’t care about the jokes); and a final moment in which one of the cast members almost saves the sketch by commenting on how awful it was. “A Song for Daddy” never made it to air, but here, you will hear the entire sketch as it was performed in Dress Rehearsal, and you will hear from the writers of the sketch (John Soloman, Bill Hader and Rob Klein) and the cast (Hader, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Kenan Thompson) who had the unenviable task of performing this nightmare. Nick looks back at the only time that Ron Howard hosted “Saturday Night Live,” it was on October 9, 1982, and it featured some purposely edgy material, including Ron’s monologue in which he downs a beer on stage, and a controversial sketch called “Opie’s Back!” In the sketch, Howard returns to his classic role of Opie Taylor, only this time Opie is a tough cop who comes back to find that his dad is dead, and that Maberry has turned into a dark, corrupt cesspool of sex, drugs and violence. Nick looks back at one of the best, most surprising, and most subtle political sketches in SNL history: “Black Jeopardy with Doug.” The sketch appeared on an episode of “Saturday Night Live” from October 2016 (during the intense height of the Trump/Clinton campaign) in which host Tom Hanks plays a MAGA hat-wearing Trump supporter who appears on “Black Jeopardy,” and finds surprising commonalities with the black people involved on the show. The result is a beautifully written and performed game show parody, that also works as a layered, complex, hilarious, and ultimately optimistic take on how even the most opposite of humans can actually connect during the most divisive of times. It’s one of the best political sketches ever, and here, Nick talks about the creation and writing of the sketch, how it played that night (it was HUGELY overshadowed by a little dude named ‘David S. Pumpkins,’ who made his debut on the same episode), and the aftermath of its airing. Nick talks about Cecily Strong’s incredible Weekend Update Feature piece in which she played “Goober The Clown.” On September 1st, 2021, Texas effectively banned abortions, leading to other bans and changes in policy and law. So, in response to the ban, on the November 6th 2021 episode of SNL, Strong wrote an Update piece in which she revealed her very personal experience with abortion and its effect on her life….only she was dressed as Goober the Clown while delivering the monologue. The result is one of the most important, devastating, revealing and hilarious pieces ever presented on the show, a feature so personal, funny and biting, that it caused a groundswell of support (and a fair share of hatred and controversy), and a big change in what was presented on Weekend Update, by opening the doors for other performers to follow. In remembrance of Paul Reubens, who passed away this week, Nick looks back at the connections that Reubens had with “Saturday Night Live,” including the story of how he was passed over to be a cast member, to the hilarious Digital Short he made with Andy Samberg in 2011 called “Andy and Pee Wee’s Night Out,” to the one and only time Reubens hosted the show as Pee Wee Herman. The episode, from that strange 1985-86 season when Lorne Michaels returned after a hiatus, was a strange mixture of 80’s pop culture and news satire, and tired attempt to fit Pee Wee into the SNL mix. That Show – Uh, Oh….It’s Dice Aug 02, 2023

Nick looks back at the only time that controversial comedian Andrew Dice Clay hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and it was, well….something. From a full week of non-stop news, crazy attention, and angry press, to the protest and boycott of Musical Guest Sinead O’Connor, to the VERY questionable boycott from cast member Nora Dunn, who, because of her objections to Clay’s act, refused to participate in the show (which had never happened before), it’s all covered here. The whole week culminated in a rather lackluster show, in which Dice was kept on a leash, the writers loaded the show with ‘meta’ jokes before there were ‘meta’ jokes, and, except for some protestors in the crowd who had to be kicked out for disrupting Clay’s monologue, not much really happened. The episode is notable for including the big debuts of two cast members who would go on to be legends, a new Weekend Update feature that become a staple, and A LOT work from announcer Don Pardo. The episode also created a huge rift between Dunn and the other cast members (especially Jan Hooks and Victoria Jackson) that hasn’t ever really been filled. Nick plunges into a comprehensive examination of Rodney Dangerfield’s solitary stint as the host of “Saturday Night Live.” This episode, which aired on March 8, 1980, predates the release of “Caddyshack” and marks the last season with the original cast, writers, and Lorne Michaels at the helm. The show presents an odd, uneven, and at times, startling mix of content, packed with audacious material deemed unacceptable by today’s standards, and sketches that stretch tediously (one even nearing the 14-minute mark!). However, it does capture Rodney’s remarkable talent as a stand-up comedian (his monologue is outstanding), and less impressive sketch performance (thankfully, he had cue cards to help him out). The episode also features a silent cameo by an actor who later gained fame in the 90s, an excess of Father Guido Sarducci, jokes about a 58-year-old man’s inappropriate relationship with a 10-year-old girl, a special appearance by two TV stars from the 50s, numerous allusions to the movie “10,” and a shocking parody of a gold coin collectable TV commercial that would leave today’s viewers stunned. This SNL episode certainly serves as a time capsule, dissected in its entirety here… and true to form, Rodney still can’t catch a break. [EP27]

Sometimes the most anticipated returns to “Saturday Night Live” just aren’t good….in fact, they can be very bad. That Show – You Be The Judge: Celebrities Strike Back Jun 14, 2023

When you are writing, producing, and performing a weekly satirical sketch-comedy show, you run the risk of offending people, especially the celebrities who are the targets of that satire. In this episode, Nick gives examples of sketches, impressions, and parodies that did not sit well with their celebrity targets, and, in some cases, the public in general. Targets like Barbara Walters, Jennifer Lawrence, Kathy Lee Gifford, Anderson Cooper, and more, did not keep their displeasure of the comedy to themselves. They made statements about just how bad they thought the impressions/sketches/satirical jabs were. In the case of one featured example in particular, the target (Congressman Dan Crenshaw) appeared on SNL to voice a rebuttal. On April 8th 2000, an unsuspecting world experienced what would go down in history as one of the funniest skecthes in “Saturday Night Live” history. Simply known now as “More Cowbell,” this absurd and ridiculous sketch, featuring host Christopher Walken and cast members Will Farrell, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz, was about the recording of a classic rock song by Blue Oyster Cult. Known for the over-enthusiastic cowbell playing by Farrell, the otherworldly reactions of Walken, and the entire cast breaking on stage, this sketch has become almost mythic in reputation. On October 18th 2008, a truly strange and hilarious sketch called “Fart Face,” with Will Forte, Bill Hader, and host Josh Brolin, was performed to a resounding dead silence from a crowd that did not get it, at all. Inexplicably, it became the first of a trilogy of sketches featuring the same insane characters, those sketches also bombed. In this episode, Nick gives you the back story behind the original sketch, how it was written, the interesting reception it received, and stories from Hader and Forte themselves regarding the insanity. The crazy story behind how “Fart Face” was a part of one of the most highly rated shows of that season, an episode which included cameos by Sarah Palin, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg and Oliver Stone, is also examined. The outcome was disappointing, and the entire ordeal was peculiar, as you’ll hear in this episode.
