That Record Got Me High Podcast

Are you a music obsessive? Can you sit down for an hour or so poring over an album you love, digging deep into the lyrics, musical references and ‘secret sauce’ that makes it so special to you? Then this just MIGHT be your podcast!
Each week your host – rock-n-roll lifer and recovering punk Rob Elba – sits down with a special guest to dissect a record that – metaphorically – got them high.

S3E116 - The Ramones "Road To Ruin" - with Woody Compton May 30, 2020
    Show notes

The Ramones fourth album was supposed to be the one that brought them mainstream success - stadium tours, luxury condos, champagne and limousines. Guess what happened? It didn't sell as well as Rocket To Russia, despite the presence of the obvious(?) radio hit "I Wanna Be Sedated," and the upgraded rhythmic pulse provided by new addition Marky Ramone. Rob, Barry and Is This Tomorrow's Woody Compton take the QM18 bus from midtown to Forest Hills, Queens on the Road To Ruin.

S3E115 - Fiona Apple "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" with Hillary Dougherty May 23, 2020
    Show notes

Returning guest and co-host of "The Muck Podcast" Hillary Dougherty went to her metaphorical tool shed to help us crack open the case of Fiona Apple's mind-blowing new release "Fetch the Bolt Cutters". As usual we did our best to keep up, and luckily no proverbial shins were kicked under the table - this time…

    S3E114 - Lizzy Mercier Descloux "Press Color" w/Tony Christy May 16, 2020
    Show notes

That Record Got Me High welcomes one of the hippest cats we know, Orlando's obscure funk connoisseur and the guy behind the glass window and at the WPRK mic ca. 1981, the remarkable Tony Christy. Tony takes us on a tour of the New York downtown scene via Lizzy Mercier Descloux's "Press Color" on ZE Records. We hee and haw, laugh and scratch, and make some inroads in understanding this funky, influential, idiosyncratic album.

S3E113 - The Jesus And Mary Chain "Psychocandy" w/Ed Artigas May 09, 2020
    Show notes

We squeezed into our black jeans, teased up our hair and dug deep into a record that changed the musical trajectory of many - including our guest Ed Artigas (Bling Bling, Planelifter, Zira…). 1985's "Psychocandy" by The Jesus And Mary Chain. East Kilbride brothers Jim & William Reid took their love of noisy groundbreakers like The Velvet Underground & Suicide and fused it with the sugary pop of the Shangri-Las to forge a big, shimmering sound that somehow manages to get under your skin and STILL annoy the hell out of your parents. Slap on some shades and turn it up!

S3E112 - Tom Waits "Rain Dogs" with Tim Moffatt May 02, 2020
    Show notes

Now under the threat of a mandatory minimum sentence due to this third time before the judge, film-school reject, but no "momma's boy," Tim Moffatt brings the ill-gotten goods from a heist-gone-wrong with Slaughterhouse Joe and a Cuban Chinese. Kick the drum, let me down, keep my clarinet beneath your bed 'til I get back in town. Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs" is full of this and much much more. Call now, supplies are limited. S3E111 - Dinosaur Jr - "You're Living All Over Me" w/Todd Philips Apr 25, 2020
    Show notes

The earth-shattering appearance of You're Living All Over Me on the US independent music scene in 1987 was mirrored by the earth-shattering volume at which the band reproduced the sound live. Lemonheads / Juliana Hatfield Three drummer and "suave fuck" LA ad exec Todd Philips didn't have to drag us to the altar on this one, we were already converts. This piece of heartfelt Americana (like Todd) hasn't aged a minute in 32 years. Support That Record Got Me High on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH/

    S3E110 - The Psychedelic Furs S/T - with John Mahoney Apr 18, 2020
    Show notes

What day is it? It's Saturthurwednesday, again? Or is it? In a Groundhog Day world, we summon a Groundhog Day scenario, with last week's guest Trish's older brother John doing another self-titled debut album from groups with great first and second albums. But, as the writers of Seinfeld knew, the rules are "No hugging. No learning." This album though is a standout, an idea which we give a good sound thrashing in this, our 110th episode. BONUS material follows the sign off, for the patient, or for those who we have driven to slumber. Support That Record Got Me High on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH/

S3E109 - The Cars "The Cars" - with Trish "Money" Mahoney Apr 11, 2020
    Show notes

It's Rock and Roll High School time with multi-talented Trish Mahoney, and less talented Rob and Barry, as we ride around in an older sibling's Camaro and listen to some New Wave band on cassette. The Cars were the first full-fledged card-carrying members of the club to sneak past the programming managers at rock radio. Their debut spawned hits, and much fawning over Ben Orr's good looks (TRGMH included). Get in the back seat, feel the hot upholstery on your t-shirt, and Let the Good Times Roll. S3E108 - David Bowie "Scary Monsters" with Larry Smith Apr 04, 2020
    Show notes

From three separate, secure locations we came together to bring you our shared experience of David Bowie's stunning "Dear John" letter to all things experimental, twisted, broken, and dark: Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). Veteran punk rock sound engineer and musician Larry Smith plays the third Stooge in this week's Columbia Short Feature, "We're Drinking Together Alone Again." S3E107 - Leon Russell s/t Debut - BONUS EPISODE Mar 30, 2020
    Show notes

We were encouraged to get into this massive slab of wonder by Hank Teverbaugh, who works (in some capacity!) with Leon Russell's estate. We were glad to do it and we are happy to work double time getting this bad boy ready for the "airwaves." Leon Russell has played on records you know and love, and probably played things on albums you assumed were played by some member of the actual group. His musical talents were extraordinary, and his voice is greasy like bacon. Feast your ears. Support TRGMH on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH/
