    S3E135 - Game Theory "Lolita Nation" w/Jonathan Segel Oct 03, 2020
    Show notes

Game Theory, "Lolita Nation" with special guest Jonathan Segel This week's guest Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven, Sparklehorse, Eugene Chadbourne…) phoned in all the way from Stockholm to discuss California power pop band Game Theory and their 1987 magnum opus "Lolita Nation". Band founder Scott Miller may have overreached somewhat with this dense, experimental double-album, but underneath it all are jangly hooks and heady lyrics about life, regret and the loss of innocence. "It's been a decade of record stores Hordes of failing new wave careers What lengths we're going to just to find Exactly what we don't want to hear With all our well-trained ears" Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH

S3E134 - Skip Spence "Oar" - with Eric Drew Feldman Sep 26, 2020
    Show notes

We are very pleased this week to welcome Eric Drew Feldman – bass, keyboards, producer, collaborator – with Captain Beefheart, PJ Harvey, The Residents, Snakefinger, Pere Ubu, The Pixies, Frank Black, et. al. His choice of Skip Spence's 1969 solo masterpiece, "Oar," leads us down a crooked path, littered with anecdotes, illuminations, insights, and of course to Skip's own not insignificant travails as a musician and as a person. Thanks to Mark Guerita of That Facebook Group Got Me High for arranging this get together.

S3E133 - Blur "Modern Life Is Rubbish" with Peter Norris Sep 19, 2020
    Show notes

BLUR "Modern Life is Rubbish" with special guest Peter Norris This week's guest, musician Peter Norris - also the man simultaneously in charge Scottish independence AND the UK's nuclear weapons to hear him tell it - joined us all the way from Glasgow, Scotland (well...near Glasgow) to discuss a record near and dear to him: "Modern Life is Rubbish" by Britpop titans Blur. Returning from an unsuccessful US tour and under threat of being dropped by their label, singer Damon Albarn and company reached back to their UK forebears - think The Kinks and Small Faces - to craft a lushly melodic document of the dreams, traditions and prejudices of suburban England. "Modern life, well, it's rubbish! I'm holding on for tomorrow…"

    S3E122 - Arctic Monkeys "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" - w/Buffalo Brown Sep 12, 2020
    Show notes

That Record Got Me High welcomes local guitarist and polymath Buffalo Brown, whose band Cog Nomen made some of the best music South Florida heard in the last ten years, along with his cohort Ulysses Perez. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a departure for Arctic Monkeys, from the earth to the moon, literally. A blend of modern adult angst and sweeping retro-futuristic soundtracks, it will surprise you as much as it did us. Take your seat and buckle up, it's time for lift off.

S3E131 - The Associates - "Fourth Drawer Down" with Tom Smith Sep 05, 2020
    Show notes

Associates – Fourth Drawer Down Returning guest, composer/producer/singer Tom Smith (To Live and Shave In L.A., Peach of Immortality) brings in a band that managed to escape both Rob & Barry's radar, the darkly expansive and criminally overlooked (at least in the US) Scottish post-punk-pop band Associates. This amazing collection of singles released in 1980/81 defies categorization – but Berlin-era Bowie and mid-70s Roxy Music is a fair comparison. Main men Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine combine fiercely intelligent lyrics and cinematic soundscapes to create desolately beautiful tales of dreams, nightmares and urban paranoia.

    BONUS EPISODE! S3E130 - Taylor Swift - "Folklore" - with Cori & Samantha Elba Sep 04, 2020
    Show notes

Taylor Swift – Folklore *Bonus Episode* In this special bonus episode, Rob's daughters Cori & Sam Elba join us to discuss a record that appeared out of nowhere, grabbed them both immediately and has been garnering rave reviews: "Folklore" by Taylor Swift. The surprisingly adult sounding record, written and recorded in isolation by Swift in collaboration with producers Jack Antonoff and The National's Aaron Dessner, is filled with cinematic stories of life, love and loss. They were very convincing in their praise, and by the end of episode – and after several glasses of wine – Rob and Barry were just about ready to be fitted for their T-Swift Cardigans!

S3E129 - Yes "Fragile" with Matt Wilson (Trip Shakespeare) Aug 29, 2020
    Show notes

This week's guest, Minneapolis singer/songwriter Matt Wilson (Trip Shakespeare, The Twilight Hours), brought us a record that he discovered late and became obsessed with despite himself: Yes' prog-rock breakthrough "Fragile". On paper it's not obvious why this dense, meticulously played collection of "song-suites" would appeal to his more indie-pop sensibilities, but appeal it did and the three of us dive headfirst into the musical maelstrom that is this record. "Dream on onto the Heart of the Sunrise…"

S3E128 - The Go-Go's "Beauty and the Beat" with Beatriz Monteavaro Aug 22, 2020
    Show notes

The Go-Go's "Beauty and the Beat" It was one of the most successful debut records of all time that happened to be by THE most successful female rock band of all time, but perhaps most important to our guest, musician/artist Beatriz Monteavaro (Holly Hunt, Saavik), it rocked! Betty joined Rob and Barry for a spirited conversation of the power-pop goodness that has been described as one of the cornerstone albums of American new wave, "Beauty and the Beat" by The Go-Go's. S3E127 Flaming Lips - "In A Priest Driven Ambulance" - w/Chris White Aug 15, 2020
    Show notes

Chris White makes his second appearance on That Record Got Me High, bringing us the cathartic 1990 release by The Flaming Lips. "In A Priest Driven Ambulance," where, among other things Wayne tries to come to terms with something he and his bandmates witnessed while on a deserted highway. It wasn't a UFO. The album is a beautiful, scorching ride. "...a Cadillac, it pulled out of the graveyard. Pulled up to me, all they said, "Get in" (Get in)...
